My last console I owned (which I still have) is the Nintendo 64. Until recently, I had the console along with 16 games. I have sold all games but 2, which are Goldeneye and Mario Kart! :)
I have recently moved house and as well as buying a new LCD TV, I was looking at buying a blu-ray player. However, when looking at the different models, I was quite surprise by the price and so I thought... if I spend a little more, I could get a PS3, which I could use for gaming as well as for blu-ray movies, so I did just that. I therefore bought the 160GB model for £199.99 and also bought Black Ops, Gran Turismo 5 and another controller...

On Sunday evening, I set the TV and PS3 up and lastnight, I started playing GT5.
As I'm a complete newwwbie and so *nal when it comes to technology nowadays (not good), I thought I've done quite well to get it all up and running. I am yet to join the PSN as I need a wireless adapter, which is due to arrive towards the end of the week. Between now and then, I can get used to the GT5 and Black Ops controls, etc...
A few newbie questions...
The controllers... I'm assuming they have to be charged before disconnecting and playing wireless-ly? Am I right in reading elsewhere I'd be looking at charging them for min. two hours until they're fully charged? How do you know when the battery is running low and they need to be re-charged?
I know I'll have a few more questions so bear with me :)

Yeah when you are on the main menu on the PS3, press the middle button, just tap it once, and in the top right it'll show the battery charge indicator.. The charge lasts fucking ages, a full charge lasts me days sometimes
What do you need a wireless adapter for? The PS3 has built in wireless, unless you need a wireless thing for your router?
One thing i'd suggest which i do myself, is buy a small fan and stand the PS3 on it's side, with the fan blowing at angle onto the right hand side of the PS3.. Keeps it cool and if you angle it towards the back, it blows away the hot air which seeps out the vents at the back.. I never use it without the fan, as they are quite prone to overheating and when they do overheat usually they are pretty fucked, fixable but sometimes the fix isn't permanent
Another few tips are that you can turn your PS3 on and off just by using the controller.. Press the middle button on the controller to turn the PS3 and controller on, and when you wanna turn it off just hold the middle button and select turn off system

Ayyy!?! It has one built in? I never knew that!!! I thought you had to either have a direct connection to a socket (RJ45) or connect a wireless adapter to it to pick up the signal from a router?
My mate has the older PS3 and I have the Slim... so his doesn't have one built in hence why he has to connect via a cable/adapter and I don't?

You don't need to..
Just go on the main menu, go to the options 2nd from the left, down to the bottom to Network Settings, then Setup Connecion, then choose Custom, Wireless Connection, and go through the options there and enter the PIN/password for your router, and you'll be connected :y:

Well I don't know do I. Haha! I have now enabled the wireless and it works :D It's automatically set to wired connection so it was asking for an ethernet cable. Now to work out how to play online and stuff. Haha!

If you can keep the wired connection then I would mate, the ps3 ethernet port is much faster than its wireless connection apparently.

I was going to say this, i found the wireless connection fine for gaming tbh.
How ever i could tell it was much slower using wireless because trying to stream iplayer, or videos on the playstation store would just keep buffering, where as if i plugged it into my laptop and bridged the connection its fine.
I can only assume the wireless card in the PS3 is shit!
I have never had a overheating problem with my OLD xbox 360, or my FATTTTTY ps3, i must be one lucky mother fucker!

For me to have a wired/ethernet connection to the PS3, I'd be needing a cable of approx. 10m long... so for now, I may just stick with the wireless way unless I start to develop problems :)

I don't know for sure, but I'd say my connection has been better since going wired.

I have a long cable. If you start to play online and notice lag then you'll probably be like 'I need to be wired!' lol.

I have a 30 METRE ethernet cable going to mine haha, it has to go all the way from the kitch, to my bedroom upstairs...so i imagine having a 30m cable is slowing my connection down? So i wanna try wireless see if it's better...if not then i'll stick with wired
If wireless slows it down slightly i'll just upgrade my connection so it's faster than it was

I cannot see a 30m cable slowing it down tbh. Mine is 10/20m roughly, and my PS3 is only a few feet away from the router and I still think wired is better.
The wireless connection will have to go through walls and floors in your circumstance and I cannot see how that would be better.
Leave it as is homeboy.

Well i'm getting a wireless router anyway! So that i can have the internet on my computer upstairs, the PC.. And wireless to the laptop downstairs..
So as i'll have it anyway, i'll try it on the PS3 and see what its like

The ethernet is 1GBps whereas the wireless is only 'G' and 'N is the fastest these days.
G is 54MBps, and N is 100MBps so even if it had the best wireless card the ethernet is still a shitload faster, even with a massive length of cable, the lag will be not be noticeable.

Well my connection is only 1mbps LOL, so would it matter if it was wireless or not as they're both capable of handling 1mbps?

No but as a general rule wired is always the fastest option. How the hell do you only get 1mbps?
Peter_D

Cos the only internet i can get here is satellite internet
I only just upgraded to 1mb used to be 512kbps! It's like £24 a month for 512kb! Upgraded to 1mb and it's an extra 12 quid a month, so paying £36 a month for 1mb
Might upgrade to 2mb but thats another £12 a month so £48 a month
When i download it used to download at 59kbps maximum, like late at night.. Now goes up to 110kbps late at night...so should be about 200+kbps if i upgrade again which is still shite but to me it's good

i couldnt live with that, when my connection at uni drops below 10 mbps i complain hah, regularly get download speed of 60 or 70 mbps!
As for cable causing lag i highly doubt it, im pretty sure ethernet cables are fine up to about 100 meters without needing a booster. I think thats what i learned in a-level any way!

Wow, if that's true then that difference is nuts.
