The taste doesn't change, it's to do with the coldness affecting your taste buds making it taste different then to what you're normally used to.

My old man reckons that whiteness is nothing to worry about, he's a plumber, can't remember what bullshit he gave me, but it is perfectly fine to drink, if you leave a glass full of "white water" it will eventually go clear after about five minutes.

iirc water thats white is softer, think the south has the hardest water.
