Well, it lasted a long time, and would of lasted longer if it wasn't for that apparently simple mistake.
I often wonder what these hackers are like, they must have no life, but it is impressive that they can do this, I call bullshit on the "we don't want to use it for piracy" :D.

I have been following the story for ages now, It took them ages to hack the ps3, it was the hardest console to break by MILES.
The reason they do it is they essentially get a super pc, the hardware on the ps3 is amazing for the price better than any PC compared. Unlocked just think what you could do...

my ps3 has been jailbroken for a while playing backups. (i have 2 consoles).
but the opertunity to run homebrew native on the ps3 is cool as it allows for 3rd party applications,

For the large majority of owners this means and changes nothing.
It will benifit those who used PS3's as servers though, programmers and those who found a benifit of YD Linux on the PS3.
The PS3 still resisted alot longer than other next gen consoles

hopefully we will eventually be able to get it to the point of the original xbox which was running a full homebrew os. which incorporated HDD backup of games (which isnt illegal if you own the original)

I think it will take a long long time for that IMO.
Wouldn't surprise me homebrew content on the PS3 comes avaliable on the eve on the next Sony Console being announced.

The gentleman that 'hacked' (which he never) the iphone and PS3 is George Hotz who now works for Google and is only 21.
He found a flaw and exploited it.

Indeed, clearly they are just as (or more) intelligent than the makers of the PS3
I would imagine Sony will try and recruit them....or Microsoft

The guys that broke the console are the same guys that broke the wii so already well known in the hardware hacking circles.
the ps3 didnt last ages really, the people who produce these hacks generally do it to run home brew os's etc and since linux was allowed to run out of the box on a ps3 they never bothered.
A few months back sony removed this feature, so people started to rip apart the code on the console to bring it back.. its only taken them a few months to do it, and as a side effect allow pirated games. I imagine Sony have learnt their lesson now!
For those that are saying they only did it for game piracy are wrong, they did it to get linux back on the ps3.
Rogue_Shadow
6th January 2011, 17:32
they did it to get linux back on the ps3.
But they are going to have to continue to hack away at it because even when the PS3 allowed "other OS" function. Only the most basic version of Yellow Dog Linux functioned. Even then they had no access to the RSX ( The NVidia graphics card) or even a quarter of the Cell processor. So if anything they can continue where they left off, along way to go.
Ultimately they will aim to run a full dedicated OS and not Half and half, leaching off the PS3 OS. Basically meaning they have to make a Brand new OS to the parameters of the PS3 specs while overriding security measures preventing them from access the PS3's hardware.

As much as i agree they will be virgins, but there is probably alot of money in hacking things like this.. Like chipping the old PS2's they charged like £80 a pop to chip it so you could play copied games
If they hacked the PS3 and sold the 'how to' for £50 each, loads of people would buy it so they could buy games for a few quid

It's not a super PC though, it has a blu ray player which is ace don't get me wrong, and although it's a dedicated gaming console in as much as it's far more efficiently processing games on a PS3 than a PC, my graphics card runs rings around it, I mean double the V ram and power of the PS3 easily.

The PS3 has huge processing power for a fraction of the cost of alternative options.
The military actually used 1000's of PS3 for supercomputing and server stacks because it was RIDICULOUSLY cost effective. However when Sony removed the option to run other OS this function was lost. So you can see why alot of people are eager to break into the PS3 and reveal its full supercomputing potential. It goes far beyond homebrew and gaming, people want to use the Cell processing broadband chip inside the PS3.
For all those who own a PS3, you can launch "Life with Playstation" formally known as Folding at home (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Main). Launching this hooks your PS3 to Stanford University and uses your PS3 to super compute and Fold protein molecules ...
No other console can claim to be working on cures for disease such as Parkinson's and Cancer.
If you tend to leave your PS3 on while downloading things off the Playstation store, or have your PS3 on for long periods not playing Games.
Please start up "Life with Playstation" you will be doing good with your wasted energy :y:

its pointless me pm'ing people telling how to do it because if you go to psxscene theres alot of tutorials and all the files you need and also all the software to put on your ps3 for game backups and all sorts of stuff :)
was months ago when i did it havent took much notice to it for a while but can play games from internal and external harddrive
but all info is at that site anyway

Yeah don't get me wrong, SUPER wasn't the best word, but basically what I meant was the PS3 harnesses a lot of power expecially with the bluray player & for the cost! 200 smackers is going to buy you one shite tower that's for sure

I7 chip? Don't get me wrong it's decent value hardware, but it's too dedicated, if you want to do all these different things you would buy even stronger hardware in a PC with windows. The fact you have to start changing things and altering it's very function to get it to do something it wasn't designed to do isn't good imo, when it functions as a console that's great, and I can see the attraction of cracking the console as far as piracy goes, but for everything else a £500 PC would destroy the PS3, that's before you even get to how much more you can do with windows than having to go to all this trouble trying to get a console to do a computers job, although it is technically doing it already, I just don't think it's as good.

Stop pulling at my heart strings, I have a PC that can cure AIDS.

Agree, I was thinking more of like £500, cost >< performance you have a good argument.
In fact I think I've seen the flaw in my own argument, I was saying about performance, and you're talking price performance, I guess this sums it up;
but for everything else a £500 PC would destroy the PS3

I use my ps3 about once a month so nothing i'd ever bother about really. Don't even have it connected to the net so never had any updates other than when i bought ModernWarfare 2 for it.
Wonder if Sony would be able to revoke online privelages like Microsoft did a while back for tampered units?

To install Linux (If its still possible)
You will have to wipe your hard drive and downgrade your PS3. You will not be able to play your PS3 online or update any games.
This is because Sony have wiped out the "Other OS" feature of the console with firmware upgrades. Meaning the only way to retrieve it is to of not upgrade / downgrade your firmware. Having old firmware prevents you connecting to PSN.

I have a sexbox, it really does piss me off having to pay for live, for example (because I don't pay and only have silver rather than gold) I'm not allowed to do simple things like upload pictures or videos from Forza, or use the marketplace, let alone play with anyone online, I'm not allowed to use skyplayer, I'm not allowed to download demos, it's a joke, the free-ness of the PSN is a very good selling point as far as I'm concerned, the only negative is the price (of the PS3 - initial outlay, in comparison I got my xbox second hand on ebay for £50), but as discussed, you are getting the hardware to back it up, I guess the sexboxers would say you get what you pay for with live, and I have heard of games like COD where it just does not work.
Either way, I would like a blu ray player and free online, hmm, then again, I think I prefer the exclusives on sexbox.

I am a cheap arse, also, when I had it I didn't use it enough, I want to use it like a couple times a month which is why I want it for free, I only really played with mates a couple times, sort of as and when, I didn't need it, but it's irritating to not have it when I want it, and be paying for it when I'm not using it 99% of the time.

Bound, the whole point of hacking / cracking whatever you want to call it the PS3.
Is for Cost effective Supercomputing
Yes PC's dwarf both the PS3 graphic GPU and CPU power. Yes a PC can do tons more than a Console ever could. PC gaming is superior, You cant beat a Keyboard and Mouse imo :D
But the flip side of the PS3 cracking is piracy like you mentioned. The Reason PC game sales are declining are because its extremely easy for game piracy on the PC. The PS3 was once and still is (Just) a very secure console. Developers like Crytek are making future games on both consoles and PC, not because they can get betters results on the PS3 or Xbox. But because they are guaranteed sales unlike the PC. Console owners have no torrents or other means to get a game. Crisis 1 sales were far under the estimated figuers because they didn't take into account piracy. for Everyone 1 copy of the PC version sold ... that can be passed to 100 others on torrents etc.
Every sale on a console is a confirmed safe Sale.
So thats the two sides of the PS3 being cracked
Piracy
&
Supercomputing
This isn't a power pissing contest lol :P

Agree, they are greedy bastards though so I doubt it will happen, I also don't like their "Microsoft points".
It's misdirection to make you think you're spending 'points' rather than money, and everything is extortionately priced, why not just advertise in pounds and you pay on card..
Oh, they aren't bringing Iplayer to 360 either because it doesn't earn them any money unlike skyplayer, which by the way regardless of which packages you pay for with sky for your television you don't get on skyplayer, you have to pay again :D.

well not released to the public anyway because all hell will brake loose with the cheating fuxers on the games
but you can manualy update your games and get the updates from a website(i know you used to be able to i dont think this has changed)

Why do people do this though?
There are a few advantages (Not yet though lol)
Once hacked, the PS3's hardware could be fully utilised by anyone and everyone.
So you could launch a Operating system similar looking to windows XP, Run a full internet explore, download programs like Winamp, read any media files from USB ports not just PS3 support files. You could play copied DVD's and blurays. To a greater level you could expand the hardware itself. The PS3 only has 256 Ram, with a full cracked PS3 you could happily install more. Basically giving you a power Computer for a very cheap price.
There are ALOT of possibility.
But right now, in current form, a cracked PS3 doesn't even have access to the RSX. So not even a graphics card :y:

They may have cracked it and it may have a good proccessor at the end of the day your not gonna use it as a pc it has very little ram 256mb, it will play blu ray but you cannot write a bluray discs it has a small hard drive and processor lacks anyway as it wasn't designed to multitask.
It could be used on linux think it was yellow dog linux.
The cheap side - your not going to pay over the odds or more than what you would pay for a pc for a gaming console.
Bound - your cheap and ps3 servers are crap so therefore xbx live is worth paying for a better service.
