Hi people, thought i would start a progress thread of my saxo vts.. she started life as a simple standard vts, diablo red with white team dynamic multi spoke wheels... the 1st thing i did was decided that for some gay reason it would look good with under car neons...so i bought and fitted them...

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 12:00
ok then here we go as promised.... i started off with the vts you see above... then i got greedy and decided to buy another one...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/01.jpg

most people would say that would be enough....

but i decided also i needed another... so.....

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/02.jpg

shortly after those photos were taken some stupid fucking woman driver in a 1.1 bogey green saxo decides it would be a good idea too put the engine, bonnet, slam panel lights ect into the boot of my red vts....:wall:

absolute bummer... so i decided it was time to pull her off the road for repair...

thats the day that started it all... one fateful febuary afternoon in 2009....

so we proceeded to start the body work...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/03.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/04.jpg

then i thought while i have it in my workshop i may aswell smooth the bonnet...

so in went the plate..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/10.jpg

then a skim of bongo and some new shiny sparco bonnet pins :y:

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/12.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/16.jpg

after that i decided that i could not smooth the front then leave the boot... so out came the metal plate and the welder...

looks sweet mate! cant wait to see how it now days and good progress do it all yourself?

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 12:30
yes mate, every single thing you see was carried out myself.... apart from the mapping of the ecu .. which will come later on in the thread!

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 12:41
while i was sitting at home in the evenings i was thinking of naughty thoughts of, turbos, superchargers, and throttle boddies..... now which one of the 3 should i do.... i liked the idea of all 3... so i decided to buy an intercooler to see what it would look like in the bumper.....

so i chopped up the bumper and sat it behind to look at the effect...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/15.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/14.jpg

... dunno about you.. but i was SOLD on the boost idea!!..:y:

7th January 2011, 18:38
liking where this is going, get the rest up lol

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 19:26
ok so here goes with some more..

i realized that if i was going to be plumbing in boost of some description engine bay temps were going to get a little higher than usual... and some idiot had decided to smooth the front grill...:wall:....

so i devised a plan that involved drilling holes in the bonnet and taking a jigsaw too it... :s ...

so without further consideration out came the drill and jigsaw...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/17.jpg

and after a fair bit of filler work.. rivets and fiber glass paste... the out come was like this...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/18.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/19.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/20.jpg

here are a couple of shots with the bonnet vent, the intercooler and the smoothed grill...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/21.jpg

dougieph2
7th January 2011, 19:56
not keen on the smooth front grill and tail gate.. but i like the supercharged idea..

i think you shouldve made that bonnet vent a bit more subtle aswell

blackie_2k5
7th January 2011, 20:00
ouch, dont like the vent tbh, but functional i bet

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 20:08
next was onto the rear bumper situation... see where i had welded the plate into the boot.. the recess was long gone..... so i had the issue of number plate relocation... but trying to keep it 'legal'...:panic:...

so i came up with a similar idea to how the pug 106 has the number plate moulded into the rear bumper... ..

so i proceeded to make a stainless recess box... and then took a jigsaw and drill too a brand new 150 quid bumper .... all in the name off modification!!...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/23.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/24.jpg

in it went.. with the help of a few rivits...:y:

then i needed to mould it in to the bumper.... out with the fiber glass paste..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/25.jpg

then the filler!...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/26.jpg

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 20:23
so then after i had finished the majority of the filler work it was time to get it masked up and get it into the booth for some primer...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/29.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/30.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/31.jpg

... then after a quick squirt with some yellow custard it looked like this!...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/32.jpg

then the fun part of peeling of the tape :A:

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/33.jpg

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 20:38
After i rolled it out of the booth i bolted its newly refurbed wheels on..... i had the inserts painted gold and the front faces polished.... as the original idea for colour scheme was going to be gold and black so they would of worked well.... although as you will see later on they were a major fail for the colour scheme that we went with in the end..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/35.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/36.jpg

PRIMING DONE!!

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 20:41

...nicole i take it you have never primered a car before then!.. i dont think it would look right painting over filler!!:fcuk:

i had a full respray, but im sure we didnt de-mask between primer/paint lol thats why i was confused
http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showpost.php?p=4556846&postcount=153
see at the end primer, got wet flatted masked up and then painted with the same paper on :A:

i like where your pictures are heading though, looks like a lot of dedication :y:

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 20:54
just a few randoms of it a few days after the primer was done... you can also see the 'roll cage' that i bolted in... one of my more stupid ideas....

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/37.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/38.jpg

as i said excuse the ebay cage... things do change.. i promise!

iSlayeR
7th January 2011, 20:56
Looks like a lot of hard work has gone into it :y: Do you wet sand filler primer? :geek:

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 21:02
iSlayeR...yes you do wet sand filler primer.. or 2k primer as it is known.. you wana wet sand it with 800 wet and dry... but be warned if your going to wet sand a whole car you will need ALOT of sheets of it, it gets 'blunt' real quick and you end up getting the paper picking up the material rather than sanding it away.....

and nicole your paint job was obviously done by a bunch of pikeys! :)

jeffchiz
7th January 2011, 21:12
i was gonna say ive never seen anyone remove the masking bewteen primer and paint, but meh im no pro, looking good

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 21:16
after that drama was out of the way i was having to think about the electronics that were going to run through the car.. and any gadgets that i was going to have... as i was going to run boost i thought a turbo timer would be a cool little gadget too have.. as they are not exactly widely seen on cars like the saxo... unless you have boost of course or an alarm with a built in one.. but they are cool little devices and so i decided it was a good idea... so i got out the multi meter and started to find the cables.. then i made my own loom from the original citroen ignition loom to run down to where it was going to sit...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/44.jpg

as you can see the yellow, blue and red wire going into the chocolate block in the pic.. they are where my loom splices into the ignition loom...

then i bought a push button start and wired that in aswell.. shown by the cheeky little relay in this pic..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/43.jpg

this better get good lol :P

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 21:19
dougieph2... trust me and have a little patience!!.. it will get AWESOME!

dougieph2
7th January 2011, 21:21
i hope so :P

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 21:29
so next i needed to get this turbo timer somewhere where it was easy to get too.. but did not look tacky as fuck.... so out came the MDF and Fiberglass paste.... and then i went to town on the bottom center console...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/46.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/47.jpg

then some extremely precise measuring came into play... and some precision drilling and fileing.... to get a nice snug fit...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/49.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/48.jpg

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 21:48
after the timer was slotted into place it still looked a little plain.... so i decided too put in a couple of light up switches and 2 panel mount USB ports.... then after more precise drilling and cutting it looked like this...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/50.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/51.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/52.jpg

so after it took days to get it all in..... it all had to come out!:wall:

only for the center console to be primered though... but still a headache!!:wall:

so after primer it looked like this..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/53.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/54.jpg

Jay_
7th January 2011, 22:02
has its bit i like and other i dont...namely the smoothed boot + the entire bonnet....that scoop is not to my liking....

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 22:06
got a few people saying about the bonnet that they dont like.... trust me when i say it looks a whole lot different in paint..... it is weird... anyone who has done any type of bodywork in the past will know that things dont look good until they have the paint and clear coat on them!! HAVE FAITH!;)

dougieph2
7th January 2011, 22:14
cmon more pics!!!

gavmc88
7th January 2011, 22:28
please upload like a whole page update haha :D

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 22:37
after that was done i felt i needed more technology in the car for the passenger to play with... and where i had made a decision to shove a ps3 in the back with a custom 500gb hard drive for music vids, music, movies ect i needed too have somewhere too view it on.... so the dash got promoted to next on the slaughter list..... out with the silly passenger side airbag and in with some MDF....

after the MDF was placed in the dash there was alot of fiber glassing too do to get the curve of the dash right again....also a lot of filler work had to be done to get it too look right and not out of place.. i have somehow lost all the pics of the fiberglass work but you will get the idea.... then i had to wait for the screen to arrive so i could offer the stereo cage up to the MDF as to cut the hole for it too slot into... while i was on the net ordering the stereo i decided that i was going to buy 7 smoked gauges, which consisted of..

volt meter
oil pressure
water temp
oil temp
boost
rpm
air fuel

4 of these i installed into the passenger side dash... in a semi circle ring above the screen... so the passenger side had rpm, water temp, air fuel, and volt meter.... the ones i dont really need to pay attention too all the time...

looks like this...

with gauges but no screen

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/56.jpg

with both screen and gauges..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/57.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/58.jpg

then same thing had too happen as the center console.... everything had too come out for primer!!..:wall:

so here it is in primer...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/59.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/60.jpg

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 22:53
after the primer was dry the next task was to wet flat the primer on the dash and the center console.... which has to be one of the WORST jobs you can do as a panel beater!.....

after it was nice and flat it went into the booth for a coat of textured plastic paint.... have no pics of it in booth.. again seem to have lost them... but got a few of it when i trial fitted it back in the car again after it had dryed.... had to wait overnight for it to dry as baking a plastic dash at 60 degrees would not of been the best idea...

so here it is ..

keep up the hard work!!!

chris_saxo_1986
7th January 2011, 23:23
the next task (as i did not require the back seats)... was too build a false floor and some sort of holder for the ps3 too sit in... so out came the MDF, timber and circular saw.... and the back of the car starts to take shape...

Can't wait to see how this looks now, but cant help wondering why you have shoved all that mdf in there and supercharged it. Surely all the extra weight would just slow the car down and the charger bring it back to a standard speed.

Its early so not sure if that makes any sense :/

Mehhh, keep the updates coming!

As if you mask the car twice.. Your painters must earn fuck all.

... bare in mind that if you want a good finish you need to wet flat it, which number 1 gets all the masking paper wet and covered in shit from the primer... and number.... and secondly i was doing this in my spare time after work... so it did not need too be painted the second it was flatted.... also the car colour finish was not going to be decided for 3 or 4 months after it was primered... so it came out of the booth to be worked on... dont know about you but if you had a freshly painted car and then needed to work on it... disaster waiting to happen.. especially when the thing is in a workshop full of customer cars.... bumpers, slam panels, ect being swung about...thats why i waited until the last min to flat, re mask and then paint the car..... there is a reason for it my friend... ;)

Eskimo ... the primer is 2k primer... there are 2 types of 2k primer... a 'wet on wet primer' which is basically as it says on the tin... it has a sort of self leveling compound so you spray on the primer, then while its still 'wet' you spray the base coat then the clear over the top... although things have changed a bit since its been changed to water based paints..... the second type of 2k is just the type used in most body shops... you spray it on then let it dry.... it dries textured... you then wet flat it with 800 wet and dry.. that gives you a baby skin smooth finish... then for the paint.... that way you get the best possible finish with the paint....

its not like the 1k solvent stuff you get in halfords rattle cans!!..:p

cheers though mate.:y:

right here we go again.... so after the back of the car was satisfactory to house everything i needed it too house i got the screwdriver.. unscrewed it all and took it all out again...:wall:.... as i kept looking at the shitty ebay cage and thought to myself it might look nice with a back half cage bolted in...

so 1st things i had to move all the things that were in the way out of the way...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/72.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/73.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/75.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/76.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/77.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/78.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/79.jpg

so looked about for half cages and decided that i would make my own..... so a quick trip down to the local metal tube place.... bought 3 6meter lengths of 2 inch tube... got back to the workshop.... got out the pipe bender and tape measure.... then went to work on bending the 1st bit of pipe to do the curve that went up the b pillars and over the roof...

put it in place once i was happy with the bends... then tacked it too the floor on both sides..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/80.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/81.jpg

then i moved onto the plates for the rear wheel tubs... so i could do the diagonals from the main roll bar to the rear... so i welded on the plate...

this is before the clean with the grinder....

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/83.jpg

this is after a clean with the grinder...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/84.jpg

then out came the tape again and i measured the distance between the top of the main roll bar to the wheel tub plates.... cut the tube then tacked it into place to see what it was like...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/85.jpg

after that came the other side which i cut and tacked into place.... when i was happy i started on the 1st section of the rear x section.... again back too the tape.... measure.. measure again.. cut.... grind try.... grind a bit more.... try... success... tack it into place...

here is a view from the back..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/86.jpg

then a couple of it from the front through the front window...

right so the next bars to go in were the other 2 to finish of the x brace... so cut, and put into place.... when was happy that they were symetrical and looked right i tacked them in...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/89.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/90.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/91.jpg

next came the bars that i could wrap harnesses around..if the need was going too arise.... so i thought i would put them in anyway seeing as thought i had only used 1 and a half lengths of my 3 lengths of tube.. i had tube too kill...

so measured up and tacked them into place...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/94.jpg

then i put in a brace between the middle of the two rear wheel tubs... just for a bit of extra strength ... as i know these shells are bean cans.. so every little helps...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/92.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/96.jpg

here are a couple of the whole thing in the back tacked into place... looked pretty mean...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/93.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/95.jpg

then here are a couple of the outside view of it in the car...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/98.jpg

once i was happy with the look i went round and welded the lot into place .... stood back and admired!

keep going....gaining faith again after the bonnet disaster....:y:

chris_saxo_1986
8th January 2011, 23:17
after the back half of the cage was in i still had a ton of tube left.... so i kept contemplating the idea of putting in a couple of bars that came from the top of the cage along the roof then down in front of the dash too the footwells..... in the end i decided to go with the idea... so i again got the bender out and got too it....

i have no pics of it going in again have lost them somewhere... but you can see it in a few pics a bit later on...

so next the step was too prep the cage for a coat of paint... as if i left it bare metal.... it would start too rust... :n:... while i was starting too think about masking the inside ready for the paint on the cage i looked at the engine bay... and while it had no engine in it.... (or anything else for that matter).... i thought it would be a good time too clean away any rust and prep the engine bay in etch primer so that i could bang it with paint at the same time as the cage so here it is etch primed up...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/99.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/100.jpg

... then it was crazy masking time.. seeing as though the car was COMPLETELY empty apart from the dash... (obviously because the cage was infront of it so removal is impossible without a grinder!)... and the handbrake..... so i got the masking paper and tape and got too covering the dash.... checked every MILLIMETER as ANY type of over spray penetrating behind the paper and tape onto the dash was ABSOLUTELY NOT acceptable... as the dash could not come out for touch ups...

so here are a few pics of the masking... you can see the front bars in these pics..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/101.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/102.jpg

chris_saxo_1986

then i decided that it was time too get it back into the paint booth....

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/105.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/106.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/107.jpg

also decided that while the engine bay and the cage were ready.. i decided too prep the door shuts, and the insides and edges of the doors...aswell so i could squirt them with paint while i was in the booth to get them out of the way... would also mean that the door shuts ect would have more time to dry before i started to put all the rubbers ect and windows back in.. so started too mask up the doors, and window screen ect..

doors...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/110.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/111.jpg

window screen...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/108.jpg

then just a quick covering over the wings, as we did not get too much over spray on them from painting the engine bay...

really like the car and the work! bonnet is horrid, and you calling other "painters" work pikey is a bit ott considering all the primer work youve claimed to do so far is very poor and has runs allover etc etc, why mask outside A pillars if doing a primer shoot? and why not cover the full car? what was done first isnt even capable of sanding as its uneven everywhere? ive no doubt the car will look awesome as the prep above is much better then before.... looks like its getting done right now,was never even primered right the first time, get the updates finished mate i want to se the finish...... btw is this on youtube?

chris_saxo_1986
9th January 2011, 12:33
Ok people thanks for the comments... Right 1st things 1st.. For all the people who are saying that the primering has runs all over it.. I am not too sure where you are getting this assumption from.. I don't know weather you are looking at the pics and seeing the black dust all over it and seeing that as runs or what... But If that is the case.. That is a guide coat... It gets sprayed on as a dust coat so that when you wet flat the primer you know when you have got all the texture out of the surface...

For anyone who has worked with 2k primer In a bodyshop they will know that although a slower method too do it it is still a correct way too prep car bodywork ready for paint! .. Also the door pillars were not masked.. We only primered the bits of the car that needed to be.. Eg all the filler work.. The rest of the car just needed the shine knocked off the clear coat as there was no problems with the body underneath... Most body shops looking for a quick turn around paint with a wet on wet primer and paint system which means you just hit it with primer then hit it with paint with no flatting involved.. This was not the case with mine.. I had to try to fit it in around other customers cars... So it was left standing for weeks in primer...

I hope this clears up any misunderstanding!!

right so where was i... oh yea, right so after we were done getting it ready masking ect... off too the mixing room and mixed up some paint....

the colour of choice is a purple/red/pink flip paint..... for those of you so far who are not too keen on the colour.... the camera lens does the colour NO JUSTICE ... the best way too describe it is too go and buy a dairy milk bar... when you open it bend the foil wrapper around in the light.... then watch it flip.... thats the colour... i know the pics make it look just a flat purple...

so anyway suit and boot time.... air fed mask on and into the booth.....

a quick pic of the engine bay finished..

then the rest of the car was too be flatted and masked....

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/workshop/126.jpg

then back in the booth it went.... for its purple body, and black roof, bonnet and boot...

i ran out of fecking battery on my phone just before i went back into the booth, so i have not got any pics of it when i finished it in the booth was extremely satisfied with the result... pics to follow with the car out of the workshop and getting ready too come home to have what should of been a months work on it done..... that was 2 and a half years ago!

as for other bits i have a gearbox, and clutch for a vts...(i think the clutch is vts/gti can check), also have a full engine and interior wiring loom for a furio...

i may be able to source some other bits for him mate... depends what road he wants to go down... i can have a chat if he likes?

Like the thread, but why have a roll cage with all the interior too?? What the car going to used for show car more I guess? So the cage is more a show thing than for safety?

Looks bloody great :y: Did you wetsand the basecoat or/and the clearcoat? sorry for all the questions

chris_saxo_1986
9th January 2011, 22:22
andy saxo.. well the 1st idea was just too have the cage in, and track the car... then i thought thats all well and good but i was aiming for a magazine feature so i put the rear build in the car... also at the time i wanted the ps3 in there for a hard drive media player.. so had to have something built to hold that.... so it was all angles thrown into one car... its got the performance, the handling, the looks ect ect.... most track going cars are just a cage and suspention setups and the outside is left standard... i thought if i was going too build a cari was going to build it with everything... but not make it look tacky.. if you know what i mean.. like stick on bits from halfords if you like....

the plan is if i can get some kind of mag shoot then maybe afterwards i will take all the back out, or maybe leave it.. depends on how it goes...

iSlayer ... no mate, you cannot wetsand the new waterbased basecoats.. all it will do is rub it off... and you can wetsand and polish the clearcoat if you have excessive orange peel...but most modern day high solid clears come off the gun pretty good... so its only usually a quick nib and polish here and there....

Erm, not a fan of the colour scheme and various other aspects.

Although kudos for doing all the work and doing something different.

And about my earlier comment about masking twice, i do know about 2k. But the bodyshop i work at dont have time fucking about masking twice like your reply mentioned to someone else, yet we still get a pretty much glass finish.

chris_saxo_1986
10th January 2011, 16:46
Hopcraft... see the thing is mate i used to work in a custom, classic and American dragster bodyshop.... these cars were usually HEAVILY in need of MAJOR and extensive rebuilding... so time was not an issue for us... the owners of these things had big money, and we used to bill the workshop time out at £2500 a month for each person.. that used to cover the costs of the materials, and workshop overheads...(heat, light, electric, water).. ect... and a wage... and you would not believe that only just covered it...

so if the customers car was there for 2 months it cost them 2 x £5000...

see most of the things that we had rolling in were american muscle cars built for the drag strip... so obviously parts (like a front wing or bonnet).. are mot readily avaliable in this country.. so that has to come into consideration too....

as you said mate your body shop does not have time to fuck about as they are after a quick turn around... expecially if your doing insurance work where it takes like 3 months for payment!...

so you see i DID have ALOT of time too fuck about, masking up and remasking!!

12th January 2011, 11:25
ok right here we go again people.... i have just got 654 photos up onto photo bucket.. so w can now continue....

i left you with the car as it came out of my workshop....

now after i got it home there was obviously a few bits that were vital too leaving the car over night outside..... 1 being getting all the door and window rubbers back in so i could get the rear windows in.. the second obviously being getting the central locking working....

so i went too work on getting a few of the bits back on the car...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/1.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/2.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/3.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/4.jpg

couple of shots of the boot and the rear bumper.. .was extremely pleased with end result..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/5.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/6.jpg

now as many of you who own the vts know an older vts has the intermittent problem with the standard alarm going off in the middle of the night ect.... well alot of people think that its faulty interior sensors.... but in fact 9 times out of 10 with it its actually the bonnet pin that corrodes inside and sets off the alarm at stupid o clock...

so i opted while the car was empty to fit a nice aftermarket alarm system... with all the whistles and bells of course!... (remote start, full closure windows, dual stage shock sensor, ultrasonic and microwave sensors)..

you get the idea... security for the car had to be high!...

so out came the multi meter, a fuck load of cable and soldering iron...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/7.jpg

and in went the alarm system... nice hole cut out of the foam floor padding to give the main alarm box a nice secure home...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/8.jpg

more wires from all over the car...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/10.jpg

picture of the alarm flashing l.e.d in its new home in the dash..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/11.jpg

then i wired in a custom 'immobiliser'... as the standard ecu was going to be replaced with stand alone management and i had torn my wiring loom down for various reasons...so i needed some form of knowing that if ever something was too happen then someone will not be getting very far with the car..... so i used a series of relays and a bit of craftyness.... and hid it all away

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/12.jpg

so she will not fire unless it has been unlocked....

alarm control box in its new home

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/19.jpg

also thought while i had soldering iron out i would run the wires up too the gauges...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/20.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/21.jpg

ok after i had all the glass back in the car, and all the alarm system was installed... (so i could lock it!)... then it was time to change the gay wheels....:homme:

so off came the freshly refurbed multi spoke team dynamics, ...... (and straight onto my sisters saxo! as it was in need of a wheel change itself!), and then on went some team dynamic motorsport pro race 1.2's in gloss black :y:

yea mate it was getting rather a lot of attention... although some of the attention was from people who were just there to criticize the work.... (but fuck them!!)..

i think its because most skylines, evos, ect are all the same... yea they are all quick and got massive intercoolers ect but they all generally look the same!.... there are a few exceptions of course!..

its pretty rare to see a hot hatch now days that's got it all and done properly thats why i think it got interest!..:A:

chris_saxo_1986
18th April 2011, 09:55
I can imagine that the other supercharged saxos you have seen have been done using the rotex supercharger?.. And possibly still running on standard throttle body and inlet manifold?.. If that is the case then by keeping the standard stuff they can keep the idle control valve in the throttle body.. Thus allowing a fairly decent idle.... Mine however has a c2 vts alloy intake manifold and a 306 gti6 throttle body.. So I have no idle control valve in it.. It is done on the map.. So that's why it's not quite right yet....

Once I have made myself a smaller charger pulley at work I will be taking the car over to dave walker at emerald and he says he should be able go get the idle spot on without idle control valve.. And seeing as though it's his system he should be the best with it!!

Yea I'm running basically the same setup in pulley sizes as the cooper s does.. (crank and charger itself).. Although I'm not producing as much boost at the mo as the size of the boost piping and the front mount intercooler play a part in reducing pressure.. I'm only running on around 8psi boost.. But a 20% reduction in pulley size should see another 4-5 psi also shold give me max boost further down the rev range.. So will see how it goes!!

ok so the next headache was that i had built the engine... i had built bottom end, bolted on head ect, got it all ready as a bare lump to bolt into the car, i got it all in plugged in ecu... (which the guy had done an absolutely BALL SACK of a job of making loom... was SHOCKING but anyway.. plugged it all in, started it up... smoked like a bitch.... wtf!... took out plugs, oil all over them...

started to dismantle the engine to find the rings had broken up.. straight onto phone to company.. turns out the batch of rings i had bought were faulty!...MAJOR BUMMER... although on the upside..(or so i thought at the time).. they said to me that if i send them the engine they would replace the rings and rebuild the engine for nothing... seemed like a deal to me... so on a pallet it went and off on a lorry....:y:

so next job was to bolt up the fly wheel, clutch, ect and get the gearbox...(freshly cleaned and painted).. mated to the block.. can see its bolted to the engine in previous pics...

also another thing to note in the previous pictures, is the output pipe on the top of the charger... notice how it looks nicely fabricated and it comes out to the front of the engine... this needs to be changed later on... and you can go back to those photos for reference when you see the balls up a supposed 'welder' made of it when i asked if he could moddify it!..

anyway enough crap and out with the engine crane,.... and in the engine goes...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/34.jpg

hmm this presents a problem... the charger intake pipe hits the front crossmember...

never mind we will deal with that later.... again notice my nicely fabricated output pipe!

right so next i needed to get an idea of where i was going to be fitting the intercooler, and oil cooler, ect.. so i had to make up some custom bracketry to mount them on... (rather than the pikey way of hang it in the engine bay and the boost piping and hose clips will hold it in place,...see it soo many times of punto turbos, starlets ect... ) so this is the system what i came up with 1st...

another up close with bumper on...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/43.jpg

right happy with clearance on coolers... just not on the charger as you can see... little too close to bottom frame..

ok next step was to sort out the boring looking rocker covers... so i took a few measurements, went down the local graphic design place, told them to get on with my custom decals!... so they sorted me out with the graphics i wanted and i got too it... sand blasted and chemical cleaned the covers... 2 pack primed them.... flatted them, painted them, stuck on graphics then clearcoated over them to seal them in,.... now i did have some pictures of the process but they were unfortunately on my iphone that fell out of a cherry picker and smashed into bits so they were lost... but here is a couple of pics of the end result...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/44.jpg

right next as the space was getting tighter than a nuns cunt (pretty tight). already i had devised the plan to relocate the radiator... so i decided the best place..(more like the ONLY spare place was where the spare wheel carrier used to be... so i measured up and made myself a cardboard radiator.. complete with bog roll inlets and outlets... (fucking art attack has NOTHING on my blue peter skills.. as you can see..)..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/48.jpg

so after a quick trip down to local motor store and a browse through the many bibles full of sizes and dimensions of rads we came up with a fiesta rad which kinda was a spot on fit to the cardboard replica racing rad i had made...

so ordered it up, next day got it home.. made some bracketry.. and bolted it up under the car..

ok so radiator was on.. hose just needed running to front of car and to be secured to the chassis... later on i decide to change my mind about the rad location for various reasons.. so it stayed there until i came up with a new plan.. but we will get to that...

anyway so i decided that i was going to get back on with the inside of the car..

so i slotted in the kenwood double din dvd player.. and wired it all up to the connections it needed..

also put in my custom center console... if you have read from beginning, you will know the effort that went into making this thing.. as you can see it was home to the turbo timer..(now obsolete and removed), 2 usb ports..(for the ps3..(also obsolete and removed now.. and the 2 switches that were needed, one was for the passenger sidescreen..(this one still exists today.. although the center console itself has had many different designs in the years, .. although i would pay special attention to the 'VTS' lettering...

RIGHT... OK where were we... oh yea, right if you have read this then you will recall the nicely fabricated charger outlet pipe that you saw a few pictures ago.. nicely fabbed up.. just unfortunately the output was in the wrong place.. so needed moddification...

so i drew a little sketch up of the proposed design and headed down to a local welder who specialized in alloy and stainless welding... his reputation was outstanding.. so obviously was the man for the job...

discussed the idea, he was happy.. said to me to call in couple of days.. so left it a few days... rung.. no answer... left it couple weeks, tried, no answer... this went on for 5 months when i eventually got hold of him by ringing from a land line number... and the response i got was ..'sorry i have not had time to finish it'....WHAT THE FUCK?!...

so i told the bloke i will be down tomorrow to get it... walked in and he presented me with this absolute pile of SHAT!..

Wow he fucked that up, what was it made of?

chris_saxo_1986
12th October 2011, 20:30
so with the supercharger output 100% FUCKED in every way possible.. it was time to sort out the next complete fuck up...AGAIN THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAD DONE.. if you want something done right do it your fucking self...

so as this engine was running on an EMERALD K3 ECU system.. the guy where the kit had come from.. (not emerald).. had in his wisdom made the loom up... it was WAY to short for most of the plugs.. there was sparky tape in all directions, copex covering only 50% of the loom.. rest was tape.. and when you plugged it into the laptop the emerald program did not read half of the sensors.... NO GOOD...

so in my wisdom i decided number 1 the ecu would be better protected inside the car.. so thats where it was gonna go.. and number 2 it needed a major loom overhaul and rewire...

NOTE... THIS IS A JOB THAT CAN AND WILL FUCK YOUR ENGINE MANAGEMENT IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING... NOT TO BE UNDERTAKEN IF YOU ARE NOT 100% SURE WHAT YOU ARE CONNECTING TO WHAT!!!

so old loom was stripped down to the bare cables and out came the wire cutters!

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/93.jpg

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/94.jpg

out came the haynes and the notepad...(althought the haynes was not much help at all! ended up toning out all cables as it was COMPLETELY WRONG!.. thanks mr haynes!)

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/95.jpg

more notes and diagrams!..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/96.jpg

once had cut all cables and chucked out all the old shit.. was left with 3 piles of connectors...

1 of the ECU main plug, 1 of the rose joint in the engine bay, and the last of all the plugs and sockets for each and every sensor on the engine!..

here they are all happily lying in wait to meet the soldering iron on my bedroom floor...

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/98.jpg

as you can see... it was gonna be a task... this lot was needed to get the engine running and its all in bits on the floor!..

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/99.jpg

fun times lay ahead..

I think it would actually take more effort to make a mess like that than it would to make properly with a bit of time and love going into it lol

Can you see your gauges when in the drivers seat?

mate, i think he tried welding it with a hacksaw blade and some dynamite... i probably would of got a better job out of it if i would of given it to an angry gremlin who ate his own shit... (not too sure what he would of done to it.. but it would of been better than what i got!)

any hooo lets get on... i had been thinking about the seats i wanted for the car... but what i wanted and what my budget at the time could afford were 2 different things... like most!..

i had my heart set on a set of COBRA SIDEWINDERS.. but at 550 quid PER SEAT!.. then the added cost of the runners and subframes it was working out to around 1400 quid for them... so i set my sights lower and managed to settle for some SPARCO R100's.. as they were 150 per seat and plus runners ect they were just a little under half the price of the sidewinders... so i had the seats planned...

BUT THEN.... one day while just having a browse on ebay... as one does, just for general crap... i thought you know what i will see what seats are about...so typed in cobra.... went through hundreds of items.. tatty as fuck seats, ect.. all piles of shit basically.. for too much money..(isnt everything on ebay!)..

so i get to this one add.. COBRA SIDEWINDERS BASICALLY NEW... well hellooooo there.... was a buy it now for £275!!... looked at pics.. expecting the usual crap.... they looked in PERFECT CONDITION...only thing that was missing was frames....can deal with that considering i am only paying half of what one chair is worth!...

so hastily got on the blower and contacted the bloke.. asked about condition ect... he said they were as in picture... a+ condition... so just random question to him was what car are they out of?... then he says... oh they came out of my 106... i gotta try and get rid of the frames and sliders for them now.,... !!!!

WAIT A MIN... YOU HAVE GOT THE FRAMES AND SLIDERS FOR THESE SEATS FOR A 106?!!...

he saidyea but they werea bit marked and asked y i asked.... i said to him that the seats were going into a saxo.. so how much for the complete package.... he then turns around and goes.. give me 300 notes and there all yours!... FUCKING JACKPOT!!

so then i ask when can i pick them up... he asks where im situated... i say down in kent... he then says one of the lads that works for him has a job to do in kent on the thursday.. i will swap with him and bring them down...

so let me get this straight... you want 300 quid for the lot AND your delivering?!.. that HAS to go down as the greatest bargain in ebay history...

so true to his word.. thursday afternoon he turns up... and brings me these....

http://i790.photobucket.com/albums/yy186/chris_saxo_86/garage/103.jpg

as he said the frames were a bit scratched i gave them a cleanup and a new coat of paint..
