The M40 1.8 16v isnt all that bad.Its a revvy motor with 140bhp.Its not going to be lighting quick but it wont be slow.Still make it a fun-ish car to drive.
Good step imo, would rather this than a Saxo but would have to change a few things to be happy.
Hell i would rather a 316i Compact over a Saxo.

Would be much better if it was a White e46 coupe. Was it a straight swap? Must have mega mileage, k-reg - 18 years old?

Lol at anyone thinking that car is a downgrade. At the very worst it's probably about the same. It's more comfortable, will drive/cruise infinitely better, and still handle alright. It's a step in the right direction to something more sophisticated, although that is far from it. You need to lose the mods and get it sort of OEMish.
As for Nik, bitch please, it's the M42, not the M40. Everyone realises it's the 140ish bhp version? Still mate, should have got an E30 ;)
I like your choice, and your choice will be better as soon as you clean it up and make it look subtle.

ditch the daft exhaust aswell as woody please.
Im a fan of BMWs, not a fan of low spec E36s with naff mods though.

The 318is is no slower and drives a lot better than a 320i, the only thing the 320 has in its favour is the straight six sound.

m42* ;)
m40 is the old carb'd e30 lump iirc.
m42/4 is a good engine, only week point is the exhaust manifold cracks and blows makes a loud ticking noise.
As for the cars its self..
Its massivly chav i very much dislike but being white ill let you off, now ditch the shit spoiler, wheels, exhaust, doll. Fit an mtec kit lower it and enjoy whilke you save your ncb/money and work your way onto an M :A:

I've never understood why anyone would want a 320... 10bhp more, about 10ft lbs torque more, and it does 0 - 60 like 0.2 of a second faster or something, and does significantly less mpg...

Defo a downgrade. I borrowed a 318 for a few weeks when my corsa GSi was off the road and I hated every minute of it. Fuel consumption was appauling, the combination of a heavy car and rwd made for slow progress, it handled like a boat, and even thought it was rwd it didnt have enough power to get the back end out to play. I couldnt wait to get my GSi back!
Sorry, but there is nothing good about them - and I try and see the good in everything.

Lmao, you couldn't get the back end to kick out? If you got an iS, then you're joking or you can't drive. If it was a 318i, then I may believe you slightly, although I'm convinced it's not that hard at all

Under power alone? Not a chance. It was an IS I think. A coupe with 140bhp or there abouts anyway and it was dog shit. My corsa was better at sideways than it!

I'm speechless, it really shouldn't have been that hard... I can get sideways in the E30 pretty easily, I know it's lighter but it can't be that much different...

What with your food trays under the rear wheels?

My friends E30 325I is easier to drive sideways than in line lol. E36 318 with less than 100 rwhp, shit loads of weight, wallowy suspension with understeer promoting geometry. Anything can be done, you can get a smart car sideways if you really try. But coming in to a tight corner, lifting off, giving the scandinavian flick and trying to power round just results in the fronts breaking away and the back squeaking if you're lucky!
No point in a BMW unless its a straight 6 at the very least.

Nah just barreling into a corner, stamp on the brakes to get all 4 wheels to lock up then just chuck it in with the throttle planted to the floor. Worked a treat, my gsi was the most fun I've ever had in a car, knew it so well so could just really rag the hell out of it rain or shine and knew exactly how it would behave.
