I would DEFINATELY be doing brakes before power.

even though i've not built one before the order i'd do things is:
Less weight
Uprated brakes+lines
Suspension+geo setup+bracing
More power
As for what car to use my 3 would be:
EG5 ESI
106 XSi
MX5

E30 BMW M sport. Saw one of these on a track day with a 3.5 in it and it was eating just about everything in sight. only thing it wouldnt touch were the super cars and higher powered evos/imprezas.

Any ideas on what car you are going to start with, or you looking for suggestions?

Its very easy. Start by removing weight and fitting suspension. Both reduce the amount of work the brakes will need to do.
We ran a 1.4 trackday car which was one of the fastest vehicles on circuit whenever it went out and it ran standard low model brakes and solid discs.

Get something thats cheap and easy to work on repair (like a saxo).
Strip it out, service it and go out on the track job done!
If you wanna make a project out of it though then:
Brakes
Suspension/chassis
Interior
Transmission/Engine work

i would also fit a cage if its going to be for track and its a french tin like a saxo ect.

Building a track car with a mate wont have a happy ending. What happens if 1 of you bins it and dosnt have the cash to fix it etc??
It very rarely works tbh.

Have a look at the Primera EGT P10. These things can be had for well under a grand and are bombproof. you will have something thats cheap to run, fix and maintain.
Dare i say as good as the ITR to drive! just slightly down on power compared with the Honda.
Just a thought, what else are you looking at?

+1, nath_vts wants to do one with me, but this is my only worry. With this in mind it backs up just getting the car standard and stripped, so you aint losing any money if you crash it. If anything brakes and safety so cage and buckets with harnesses.

was thinking something cheap along the lines of saxo

An ax gt would be a good start, nippy 1.4 and alot less weight than a saxo and cheaper.

If I was serious about a track car and had the money for it I would agree. Start with a good base to carry on with, rather than taking a shit car and sticking racey bits on it, start with something that doesn't need anything doing to it to be rapid in the first place.

I've had a couple of track cars.
The first one was a Phase 1 306 8v XSI.
Now it may only have been approx 125bhp but it was superb.
Was totally stripped out, two buckets+harnesses
AVO Coilovers + corner wieghted
Braided hoses, decent fluid and good pad/disc setup
421 Manifold and stainless system
R888's
Engine was standard, the thing was very quick as you had so much trust in the brakes/tyres /suspension.
Whatever you get, do these three first and it will transform the car. Do them properly though

RWD: mx5/e30/e36
FWD: Nova

Also have you done trackdays before??
Do you have experience of RWD cars??
If not then go for something FWD.
Much easier and safer driving a FWD car on the limit than what it is to drive a RWD on the limit.

Eh.. a 6 pot e30 would be terrible, completly cain the balance of the car?
Super cars are normally middle of the pack as well carrying a huge price and amuater drivers.
Scoob's/evo's are the noob's of trackdays and forever spinning comman knowalge ;)
@Nik_L, theres nothing wrong with a noob in a rwd youll learn a lot faster and when you do get back into a fwd youll wish you never did :A:

Its a trackday. You should not be driving at the limit.

If I didnt have such a love of Saxo's (and a massive backlog of parts) I'd just get an old Impreza.
They can be had for little monies these days and come with a lot of "sport" parts as standard. Plus the 4wd is handy.

Sorry Kam,im just used to Knockhill where every1 tends to go hell for leather.
Think what you maybe ment is you shouldn't be racing which is different to being on the limit. As far as i was aware, trackdays are to have fun and learn you/your cars limit.
@ Minigibbo, its far easier and forgiving to push a fwd car in all weather conditions.Under-steer is easier to control than over-steer.

I wouldn't be buying anything turbo'd for a budget track car.Esp a scooby.You need deep pockets.
Agree on the 4wd part though.Makes even the shittest driver look like the next best rally driver.

Scoob's are a defenate nono on track spoke to so many people they cost a fortune to maintain..
eat engines like most eat tyres.
@Nik_L, maybe im biased but understeer dosent float my boat ;)
EDIT: As for a serious answer about track days not being about going all out, how many people can honestly say they dont go all out if they get a bit of cat n mouse going on..
Ive been sat in a m3 gt around bedford out braking 911 turbos just because they had the edge in the straights and the driver didnt want to be held up threw the bends.. Black flags for the lose :(
