Im purchasing a BMC Air Filter from a friend and im contemplating if i should cut a hole in the front bumper for a cold air feed and leavng the ring on the outside so it looks flush then maybe putting a small bit of mesh in the hole to stop leaves and maybe birds being sucked into the engine what your opinions

Cheers

birds being sucked in? are we talking about a boeing 747 here or a saxo

RS291
10th January 2011, 20:37
Lol well if a pigeon is gonna play a game of see if the saxo will swerve he will either get hit or sucked up and turned into crispy shredded Pigeon and i was thinking about that but then with a hole at the bottom of the bumper the air would be colder if the theory heat rises is true ?

RS291
10th January 2011, 20:38
Well if a Tit or a sparrow was close it would get sucked in and VTR's Hold a lot of sucking potential ;)

No it wouldn't. You'd need boost to really be pulling in air at a rate that's strong enough to suck in even a leaf.

And there's all of 6 - 8 inches, max, of height difference between your grill and any location on your bumper where you could cut a hole the right size for the intake tube.

mate, its not a theory haha. hot air is less dense so rises. hence why you get hot air balloons and not cold air balloons lol

You could cut a hole low down, Iv seen it done, the hole was cut out of the NSF corner of the bumper an the feed ran down to that corner. Looks quite smart, but when it comes to resale value...I like to keep it so I can go standard again! :)

explain what about the desert? :S

RS291
10th January 2011, 20:57
The Heat because its hot in all hieghts of the desert :)

rey
10th January 2011, 21:00
That's the climate, not the thermal currents, which is what hot air rising, cold air falling relates to...

Is it on a mk1 or mk2?! Mk1 morettes look class! But mk2's look out of place I think. Still look good mind! That would cost alot more than cutting a hole mind...morettes are

RS291
10th January 2011, 21:14
its a MK2 and i dont really like morettes they look wierd IMO

wassy78
10th January 2011, 21:17
second idea take bottom lights out and make vent from there but do both not one even if other don't work

Mezza
10th January 2011, 21:17

mk1 morettes are gorgeous!
and about your desert comment.... everything is hot because of the distance from the sun. the sun heats up the earth, the heat rises from the earths crust.

RS291
10th January 2011, 21:21
Ahh okay but doesnt it affect your M.O.T and i have never seen MK1 morettes if you feel like putting alink of some you might change my Opinion ;)

Yeah i know they are indicators lol

dave_1

Or Here's an Idea,

Buy enough piping, Cut a hole in your bonnet and relocate the airfiler to come out the bonnet like the exhaust on a tonka truck

Thats just pointless and stupid

Like a snorkel ?

DeekB
10th January 2011, 22:54
Could be like a snorkel yes,

And it's not pointless, you get air at a higher velocity and no need for a cold air feed

DeekB
10th January 2011, 22:55
Saves cutting bumper's!

RS291
10th January 2011, 22:57
But you still have to cut somewhere to get it out most probably the bodywork which is metal which is harder to cut than plastic!

DeekB
10th January 2011, 22:58
Doh

It could work though, I think it's a cracker of an idea and I might carry it out!

RS291
10th January 2011, 23:00
Plus your air filter will be seen and then more chance of having your car broken into to see what is in there not wise! and not cost effective

DeekB
10th January 2011, 23:04
ok maybe not such a good idea if you need to park your car on the street, you could just unbolt it and take it off when you park up

rey
10th January 2011, 23:04
Just superglue it on.

Wont go anywhere then.

DeekB
10th January 2011, 23:06
that's an even better idea, when put gaffa tape over the superglue

DeekB
10th January 2011, 23:07
Then** not when

RS291
10th January 2011, 23:18
Or get a custom made pipe made so its secure or just stick to a cold air feed!

Goldsax
10th January 2011, 23:36
I dont understand why people put their cold air feeds so low (i.e in the foggys) what about when you go through a big puddle?? water + engine = £££££...id just put it where the standard feed is :y:

rey
10th January 2011, 23:50

my cold air feed is behind the grill....for now

LSOfreak
11th January 2011, 01:16
lol this thread is full of fail

1. a hole in the bumper has been done a couple of times and looks pretty wank.
2. under the bumper will be a fair bit close to puddles/crap
3. it will NOT suck in leaves, birds or small children
4. the air wont be colder at the bottom of the bumper than the top lol

as said, have it in the grill, fog or morrette if you want that route

RS291
11th January 2011, 07:24
Or you could have it strapped on top of the car like a deloreon

ollie-vt-
11th January 2011, 11:00
If your gettin a bmc just run the CAF to the standard saxo CAF through the grill like this:

http://i897.photobucket.com/albums/ac180/ollie-photos-/bmc.jpg

i doubt having it in the bumper will give you any extra bhp tbh

11th January 2011, 19:35
completely agree with the above post why mess around just put it where it was designed to go
