following my boss on my way to work this morning, stuck in traffic had foot on clutch, just felt it go, fucking great. Not a penny to my name at the moment. Wages go on bills. Anyway my boss was with me in front he pushes it on side of road, he said it looks like the cables ok, must be clutch, im shit with cars, but it did stink. He rings his mate whos mechanic, he quotes £250 to £300 Is that fair price? My dads gonna look at it tomorrow, see if he can do it himself. As far as i know its not a massive job? You don't have to drop the engine or owt do you?

i think you just take the gear box out then you can get to the clutch no you dont need to drop the engine just gear box so drive shaft aswell :)
hope this helps.

£250-£300 is expensive IMO , i usually charge family and friends like £70 to change one plus the price of a clutch (around £90), they arnt a big job mate to be honest just nuts and bolts , you dont have to remove the engine either .
basically :
drain gearbox oil
remove driveshafts
remove battery and tray
remove starter motor
remove earths & unplug sensors on the gearbox
remove clutch cable from fork on gearbox
remove lower gearbox mounting
slacken all the bolts sercuring box to the engine
then loosen top gearbox mounting and make sure you support the engine with a jack to lower and raise the gearbox in and out
im sure theres alot more indepth guides on here but thats just a quick one to give you an idea .

dads gonna have a look at it today for me. £75 incl VAT from B+C car parts in kirstall Leeds which i pick up at 3. Also his mate from work uses a mechanic who said was very cheap. I phoned him for a quote, he said if you supply the clutch i'll do it for £100 I thought that was like.....very cheap?

£75 for the part sounds correct. I had 2 clutches done so far, paid for the part + 1 hour labour. £100 just to fit a clutch is extortion.

100 quid for fitting a clutch is about rite mate. if you can get to andrew pages in morley and ask for calvin he will give you trade discount and should end up about 60-75 quid for a valeo or l.u.k clutch kit i got one for a 106 gti last week and got it for 65 inc vat.

ye as i said mate was £75 including VAT. Dad cant do it as the cars too low and we oly have a shitty drive lol. So taking it to that guy in bradford on tuesday for £100. Seems cheap to me, as other garages have quoted £400 and £300

You sure the cable has not just snapped fella? You don't normally just "feel" the clutch go like you described. hope this is the case, easy job and pennies.

Im gonna give my clutch a go... Got quoted 150 pound to fit which isnt too bad but was gonna spend 100 quid on some tools and just go for it myself just take things slow and cautious and still save 50 pound gain some tools when finished and say i done it myself and it will always be good to learn :y:

They go by book time which is 5 1/2 hours for a garage i think on a saxo clutch change ?
Which is 61 pound an hour for mr clutch lol
Doubt it would take them 5+ hours anyway

I find that high quotes are normally supplied by people who dont know what they are doing so they quote high to account for the time i takes them to figure out how to do it.
