You will have up until the 14th day of any month to tax the car, which you can do at a post office with the new keeper supplement, otherwise no.

Just go to the post office and get a tax disc then drive home?

12th January 2011, 13:10

LeeDewell0121
12th January 2011, 13:10

from london to birmingham? i ent risking it with no tax
Silky
12th January 2011, 13:12
You could risk it, but at that distance I wouldn't bother. There are so many camera's these days that one of them is bound to pick you up.
If it was a few miles then personally I would drive it back, but I wouldn't do that distance.
Either wait for the insurance docs to come through or phone up your insurer and get them to email them through

You dont need the insurance cert, tax the car online aslong as you have insurance.
It will check the database so you dont need the ceet. then you have taxed the car you just wont have the disk
LeeDewell0121
12th January 2011, 13:14
tried phoneing and saying to email them but apparently they cant do that anymore! :( worth mentioning it been off road for the past month

12th January 2011, 13:16
You dont need the insurance cert if you have just bought the car.
wrong, you do need an insurance certificate and valid MOT to purchase a tax disc
Pixie
12th January 2011, 13:17
Surely if you have changed your insurance over the Phone and you put your start date to change for today's date, you are insured ?! :err:
Tax then drive home :y:

You dont need the insurance cert, tax the car online aslong as you have insurance.
It will check the database so you dont need the ceet. then you have taxed the car you just wont have the disk
and as he isnt the registered keeper the new disk goes to the chap he has just purchased the car from!!
not a very bright idea!

LeeDewell0121
12th January 2011, 13:19
the disc goin to previous owner isnt a prob as he sed he will post it to me
MikeYost
12th January 2011, 13:19
Only thing you can do if you want to get it home today is tax it online, the tax disc will be sent to the previous owner though so you'll have to agree with him in the reciept for the car that he will send the disc when it arrives.
You obv won't have a tax disc in the car but your car will be taxed.
LeeDewell0121
12th January 2011, 13:20
as stated above it takes upto 7 days to register on the database so couldnt do it onine

im pretty sure as long as you have paid the money to the dvla you have tax. because you are allowed a run off period of 5 or 7 days for not showing a tax disc. phone the dvla
LeeDewell0121
12th January 2011, 13:25
i cant purchase online though because it checks the database and it takes upto 7 days to register although i will be insured straight away.

That happened to me, ad to wait for the paperwork before I could get the disc. Then I was all legal, taxed and insured etc. and still got pulled over by the police. Their computers apparently take a while to be updated.

Only way you can do it tbh.
If you cant tax it, he cant tax it, you wont drive it and you dont know anyone with a trailer/flatbed or anything. Then the only way to do it is pay a company to collect it for you. Or dont buy then car :S
LeeDewell0121

LeeDewell0121
12th January 2011, 13:42

Who are you with ? Insurance wise?
You can print off insurance docs online and the post office will accept them, if your company does this
LeeDewell0121
12th January 2011, 14:34
with tesco's. already phoned them and they wont send one through fax or e-mail.

12th January 2011, 14:34

Silky

You can print it off but I didn't think you could buy tax with a temporary cover form
LeeDewell0121
12th January 2011, 16:26

LeeDewell0121
13th January 2011, 11:54
Just been told that, i cant go to a post office to get tax with a insurance certificate printed off and the post office wont accept a 1 day insurance certificate to get tax?
CampDavid
13th January 2011, 13:25
They won't accept it. It's a pain.
Options are a mate with trade plates or get the insurance now for 7 days time and go down then
dave-richards
13th January 2011, 17:51
and if it has being sorn for the last month it wont let you tax online

0rang3peel
13th January 2011, 17:52
If it's just tax, I would risk it. You can only incur a fine if stuff like MOT then fook that!
Chris-VTR
13th January 2011, 18:28
Tbh mate the only option there is, is to just sit tight and hope royal mail sort themselves out! I'm in exactly the same situation at the minute. Bought myself another vtr on monday night, at newcastle (Only 30/40 mile from me) And just risked driving it strait home down the A1. Been dieing to drive it but have to wait for the doc's. I've tried every possible way and did the same with my old BMW too, only thing at all that we can do is wait.
Tomorow is the fourth working day so i've got fingers crossed :) I'm guessing if you have no other option you'll just have to sort something along the lines of the seller keeping a hold of the car untill the docs come then go get it?
Dizzy
13th January 2011, 18:59
Just drive it home. £45 fine and no points for driving without a valid tax disc. If police pull you up for it just say you taxed it online that day and dont have the disc through.
