My step dad wants to get rid of his bike and put some extra towards a new car, but he wants a 4x4 as he already has a car.

Basicaly what would you recomend, doesnt really need to be good off road in all honesty. Will only be used off road a few times a year.

Budget will be around £6k mark :y:

about as reliable as a 12 year old saxo thats been owned by a halfords addict, sorry. it hurts me to say, as a lifelong land rover enthusiast, one time owner of dozens and factory trained Land Rover mechanic, they really haven't got a grip of quality control. It hurts me because i never had to lay a spanner on any of the shoguns i have owned outside of routine service items

define off road.

shoguns are a good buy as said they just wont die however unless you buy swb and slightly played with there no good off road land rovers are abit better off road but once again as said build is poor. But all depends on the OFF ROAD bit as if its anything serious you can forget lwb.

Pop down your local off road track and see what there running. Odds are an old Landrover, an old Suzuki Vitara or a good old Lada Niva. The old Jeep Wrangler are good too but no so popular here. They all work great off road from the factory unlike many others that are rather poor with out serious mods.

He's talking 6.5k motor here, not a bargain basement hack though, and said off road ability isn't a major concern.

had a LWB 3.0 V6 UK spec Shogun, had a standard rear locking diff and surprised me where it would go, nowhere near as capable as a Defender but on a par with a Disco. Was always going to be dissappointed in anything as i used to run a 300Tdi 90 with 35 inch Simex tyres, front and rear ARB diff locks, front and rear Warn 8274 winches, full external cage which went onto come highly placed in winch challenge events. After that green laning and play days just got boring but do miss getting out in the peak district lanes every now and then, Shogun coped with all of those, Stanedge,Chapel Gate and Roych Clough included.

Owned Defenders, Discos, Freelanders, Pajeros, Kia Sportage, Jeep Wrangler, Cyclone and an enormous GMC Suburban and played in a lot of the others....

The Isuzu Troopers are quite good value for money (also rebadged the Opel/Vauxhall Monteray I think), I like the boxy look of the Nissan Patrols (older shape SWB) and the newer Navara pick-up, Cherokee's are very basic but can be quite good (avoid the GRAND Cherokee they're crap), Mitsi Animals (older shape) are really cool and more than capable, extended cab Ford Lightning are mental and if you can find one a GMC Cyclone will impress the shite out of you on the hard stuff but naff all use in the mud.....why do you want a 4x4? What's it going to be doing: towing, trialing, green laning, shopping, school run ?????

I wouldn't recommend the td4 had one in the Freelander and found it very underpowered - my 90 has a 200tdi which is about right for most things - the experts tell me its better than the 300tdi but I'm no expert and it works fine for me so will agree with them.

The mother used to have a Discovery 3. That was pretty reasonable at going off road.
Though she never took it, I did the odd time.

Surprising what it was capable of doing up gradients, and on 3 wheels etc..

Nivas are cool but old sadly. I love them but don't see them for sale very often these days. Really tough little buggers too!!

X5, ML, Dicovery TD5, Range Rover as you say it's main duties will be on road so should have good on road manors and still be able to off road.

I'd pick something that was perminate 4wd thou save's faffing if you happen to be unsure about conditions

Drove one when I went to Moto GP for a weekend. Fine fully loaded up, and combated fields, hills, Mud etc.. Fine.

A Warrior would cope with Welsh farm tracks, bit heavy on fuel but mechanically good, occasional broken spring on heavily used ones, diesels can suffer from cylinder head problems but every vehicle has its own particular faults, aside from which, running a garage we only see vehicles when they have problems, when they are fine and dandy we don't see or remember them lol
