What are people's experiences/opinions/thoughts about these?
Seem to be selling for reasonable money, even for the very latest ones they made (2000, X reg), with great fuel economy even when modded and in a reasonable tax band, very cheap to insure too!
Seem quite tuneable too, on a relatively small budget, without really changing anything, just a good remap, exhuast and induction kit they seem to see massive power and torque increases?!
My priorities are rapidly changing at the minute so the economy and cheap modding for good returns are really pulling me towards getting one and leaving the saxo scene...
How would a remapped and breathed 306 compare to a breathed VTS?
Are the handling characteristics between the saxo and 306 comparable too? are they fairly similiar in terms of driving experience and grip?

Brilliant cars tbh for the money.Ive had a tuned Dturbo and would deffo have an Hdi.Always find myself looking for 1.Moonstone Blue 3 door with cyclones does it for me.306's handle decent enough too.
Would pick 1 anyday over a Saxo. They are pretty comfy too.

my mate has a 306 Dturbo, slammed, and its comfort is still greater than a saxo, down 40mm.

Just seen a moonstone one on cyclones on autotrader, must agree they look bang tidy, i prefer them on 17's though as the stance is epic without touching the suspension!

So handling is no issue then :y::D

I had a HDI, well i had 2... the standard suspension is the same setup as the GTI-6, so its handling is good, only difference is the weight.. If you put some 195/45 tyres on, it will handle loads better aswell...
If you spend about 300 on a remap, and get your exhaust and filter you are looking at a jump from 90bhp to around 125-130...
If you spend about 300 quid on parts, you can get everything you need for a front mounted intercooler if you are good at DIY, this will see 150BHP, maybe abit more..
Mine was remapped with filteter and exhaust, and was doing about 45-50mpg on a normal run around..
If you want to know anything, just ask buddy.
Plus you can pick up GTI half leather interior for 100 quid..

Also, Elliot can vouch for this.. My HDI would pull away from a VTR with breathing mods, and keep up with a VTS as long as you could corner as skillfully as a vts can go round a corner on rails, because of the big engine over the front wheels...

Most 3door Hdi's have the half leather anyway.Havnt seen much if any without it.

You can get the tuning boxes for these too for about 80 quid.Takes them to about 110bhp with lots more torque.

Tuning boxes are shit, plenty of people on the forums done the RR runs with and without.. and about 3bhp is added to most, and massive fuel wasting..
They come with half leather in alot, but its patterned, i mean the all black one..

They should have fitted the good old mechanical engines to the PH3's.Free tuning ftw.

I hated my HDI, too slow and seats gave me constant back pain

Free tuning and clouds of black smoke FTL
Id rather have it mapped, and the better mpg and pull

Only really smokey if you just turn the fuel up and not the boost via the actuator. Can pretty much even it out by doing a bit of both.
Mapped Hdi will be pretty smokey too seeing as it only adjusts the fuelling.Better MPG only happens if your just poodling along, but then why would you waste the money getting it mapped in the 1st place.
All these tuners claim better MPG after mapped, but it dosnt happen seeing as you just want to give it some boost all the time.

Mine was noticibly better after it was mapped.. Theres a place in leeds, and they only tune the HDI engine, they do some pretty good shit with the map like, mine was ALOT better after the map, on both cars

I was watching some vids on youtube of 306's not long back and all the comments seemed to be by dinlo's who live in the sticks thinking the more smoke they have the faster they are..
Fucking carrot crunchers :S

Can easily make them into a 110bhp with simple Peugeot mods taking from the 110bhp 406 hdi

Glad you started this thread, I've been looking at them too and considering one. Reviews seem mixed.

As quick as a VTS with a remap, so not really that slow for people on a saxo forum..

Hang on,
Standard the 90bhp 2ltr 306 HDI are SLOWER to 60mph then a Saxo 1.1ltr!
Even the 167bhp 306 GTI6 is a hole second slower to 60mph then the Saxo VTS.
So you would need 180bhp or more to get a 306 to match the Saxo VTS. Can you really double the HDI power just by a simple remap? I find that quite unlikely, who offers such a map? Even if you could I am thinking turbo lag hell and questionably reliability.

great car for a runaround. phase 2/3 only needs a set of cyclones and it looks same as a gti

306 hdi are a nice looking car wanted one for a long time but once i seen the vts for sale i changed my mind quickly
If you are thinking of swapping a vts for a hdi it seems like a drop in class if you ask me. :p

LOL you saying a Saxo is classy??
Going from a Saxo to a 306 Hdi is about 10 steps in the right direction.

Did i say 0-60? i didnt think so.. Funny how my HDi could keep up with someone in a VTS round the snake pass on the yorkshire meet isnt it then.. called low down torque, and the map makes them have much less lag.
