Im after a shorter ratio gearbox to make my vtr shift a bit quicker. was going to get a 1.1 box but then read on here that someones vtr does 5500 revs on the motorway at 70 :n:
what gearbox will still be quick but not soo bad on the motorway? what will a vts box be like at 70mph? thanks

You want either a VTS or an XSi box.

5500 revs in 5th gear?

5500 revs in 5th gear?
1.1 box with the shorter ratios will need to hit higher revs in each gear to achieve speeds the vtr box will reach at lower revs due to its longer ratios

Highly doubt it will be 5500 rpm. I have a S1 Rallye box on my VTS and at 70mph i'm sat bang on 4000 rpm.

Im not saying it will be 5500 rpm, was just saying it will be higher than the R box to the lad above because I just read a thread about him wanting a 1.1 box for his R. lol. It was more to try and explain
OP, read this http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=125615&highlight=gearbox+ratios
Has the ratios in it so you can see which box would be more suited to you. Im running an XSI box on my R and tbh the difference aint massive

No worries lol, I was just referring to the OP lol as thats what he said :) You're right though it will no way be that high. Lots of people change the boxes on their VTR's (mainly to 1.1 ones) cos the VTR box is so long!

I was gonna do it, but I managed to get a XSI box for the amazing price if £0 :fcuk: So I fit that instead :p
Also got a S1 rallye box that I basically got paid £25 to take :fcuk:

XSI boxes are meant to be a good compromise tbh. Fitting a S1 box is the best mod i've done though, does make such a difference. £25! You could make a tasty profit on that lol

-£25 ;) It came with an engine I bought, but sold the engine for £25 more than I paid, and kept the box :zainy:
S1 box it staying till I can afford to insure a vts/GTi, then its going on that :A:. Only put the XSI box in cos I managed to blow a 4inch hole into the R box :panic:

noo they are the same as a furio box
a furio box is a good choice because it gives you a vtr 3rd 4th and 5th but a slightly shorter 1st and 2nd but whether it will last as long i dont know

bad news then. you've got a 1.4 xsi box not an s1.

yeah i read somewhere here about someones vtr with a 1.1 box that did 5.5k revs at 70mph lol :fcuk:
im thinking maybe a vts/gti gearbox will be easier/cheaper to get hold of than a xsi or rallye box? anyone know how much they rev at with a vtr engine at 70mph?

3600 rpm.

if you want it to still be motorway friendly its definately got to be a vts box. 1.4xsi/rallye/1.1 boxes are murder at higher speeds. will measure mine shortly and tell you what it reads at 70 (its about 4k?)

Erm, nope. It's actually a VTS box with a S1 Crown wheel and pinion shaft making it work the same as a S1 box :A:
Definitely not XSI ratios LOL :y:

my xsi box does identical revs at 70 though
the main clusters do differ a bit through the years

ok so vts/gti box is the best gearbox to have which doesnt kill you with revs on the motorway and has quicker acceleration to the standard vtr box?
atm with my vtr box it sits at about 3k revs on the motorway which is alright but as said its too long when doing normal town driving.

Okay dude... it's just I know that my xsi box VTS also sits at 4000k at 70 mph. I made a calculator ages ago for different boxes to give you the rpm/speed at different speeds/rpms. yours should be ~4200 rpm? Sounds more like a 1.1 crownwheel???

4k is nothing i have group a engine mounts a btb manifold and pugsport my cars not quiet inside at all but i can pretty happly drive up and down the country just the other week i went across to oswestry (i live in coventry) just uses a bit more fuel

Yer my 1400 xsi box I'd 70mph at 4k rpm too
As alex said they may have varied a tad through the years though
As for the main question if it's still a daily drive I would stick with a 16v box. Or an s2rallye or 1600 xsi gearbox if you can find one around they're the better ones to go for especially using it daily

Yeah I saw your calculator mate. I also saw the thread which gives the speed in each gear of a S1 box on a VTS with a 7250rpm limit and these seem near enough the same as what I get. It might be a tad over 4k at 70 but not alot over, might be around 4050/4100 revs, when I said bang on I was just stating that it's pretty much on 4k at 70. 100mph is past 6k revs iirc so I know it won't go past 120mph! If i'm honest I think my rpm dials are out slightly anyway!
Out of interest do you know how many notches there are on a S1 pinion shaft? Remember the gearbox specialist who fitted them to my box saying he does a lot of saxo boxes but never come across one with so few before (obviously I then told him it was from a S1 rallye and was the shortest box you could fit to the saxo).. I just can't remember how many cogs/notches it had on it now!
Just found a pic from on the way to FCS this year:

Yep it's a 59 teeth output and a 13 teeth input on the s1 final drive.
That does look like a s1 FD to be fair :y: I think it was me assuming too much into the 'bang on 4k' bit lol

13 teeth spot on its rung a bell. I remember now it was listed as 13/59 on eBay. Cheers for verifying it lol :y: I shouldn't have said bang on tbf, I just wasn't expecting gearbox experts to post lol :p

the xsi and s1 rallye gbox have the same ratios throughout except for the final drive!! The xsi is 4.2 and the rallye is 4.5. So on short distance the rallye is better since it is much lower! But for top speed/highway the xsi is best since it is higher!

Ads is correct. Just over 3500rpm for a 1.1 box at 70mph. Personally, I bang on about them, as I think they're a good compromise of shorter FD, yet not too short.
