Hello :)
Right, the VTR should be sold today and I am not sure what I want next!
I walk to work so am in no hurry to buy anything, I will hold out for the right car
I have £1700-£2000 to spend
I am thinking of the following cars, I know they all have strengths and weaknesses but I have no idea which one i want so any advice would be appreciated!
BMW (3 Series, nothing bigger than 320i)
Audi (A3/A4 1.8T or TDI)
MG ZR (160 VVC)
Saxo VTS
I know everyone is going to say....get a VTS but after owning two saxos, I feel it might be time to move onto something which has better build quality, more comfortable and is bigger. Saxo's seem to be money pits!!
My GF Dad is a mechanic so I can get anything done for free.
I know about the K series headgasket problems in the ZR's but I could get an uprated one for like £80 and get her dads to change it for free.
Insurance isn't too much of an issue but I dont want anything stupidly powerfull, probably a maximum of group 16-17 of the old style insurance groups
Cheers

However BMW does come close behind that, I plan to get an E36 soonish but couldn't replace my vts with it, with have to have both.

Audi A3's are great cars if you can get a decent one with that budget!
But like you say if you can get the work done for nowt then happy days!

106 GTI
A better car all round and cheaper to insure.

Cheers for the replies so far
A didnt think about a Polo GTI, I will have a google now!
As long is they has FSH then BMW and Audi engines generally last for 150k+ and can pick one up with 90-100k on for around the 2 grand mark so plenty of life left
Aly, Surely a 106GTI is the same build quality as a VTS?
Cheers

Well I found on my GTI for every clip a Saxo would have to hold on a piece of trim a 106 has 2. Everything seems better put together less rattles and the steering feel is much better.
You have to drive one.

Ahh I see, probably why they are about 30% more expensive than an equivalent VTS then :)
Will look around for a decent one

Hmmmm I did think about it but I really don't like the look of the 206, seems like a bit of a Doris' car imo

Focus ST170 is another option, very comfy and refined but revs to 7.5k for fun times.
Might struggle to pick one up for £2k though.

For that money you could get a e36 328sport.
And if you can insure a vts/160 then you cna easily insure a 328 whichll also return you better mpg..

mg zr! faster and cheaper than other 3 and can pick a good one up for your money with low miles on, just watch out for HG's put if it been looked after there no reason why it shouldnt go for 100k+ miles

I would rather walk across broken glass and dirty needles than own/drive a KA :)
Insurance isnt a big deal, im 23 with 3 years no claims so can insurance pretty much anything
I probably should have mentioned it needs to be faster than a sloth and doesnt look like a roller skate, which kind of rules out the KA :)

Im afraid speed and power are required buddy :)
I want something with VTR power or more
The MG ZR VVC 160bhp seems like a good bet, cheap due to Rover going bust, can get a 60-70k one with FSH for around £1600 :)

If your gonna get a ZR get the 180 or dont bother IMO. My mates 160 is on 40k, and it is developing problems at a pretty quick rate. Also, if you think the saxo interior feels cheap, wait till you have sat in a ZR...

My mates one is not a facelift, with shit loads of rattles lol. Driving along and his drivers side door handle came off. Your bothers ZR may have been a good one that slipped through Rovers otherwise piss poor build quality. Rover/MG Built all their cars whilst their staff was on strike, meaning so many shit cars left the production line, perhaps with one good example leaving for every 20 cars sold lol.

lol i've been in a few facelift ones and none are as bad as you've discribed. Saxo quality is piss poor in comparison to the facelift versions.
