I think global figures ate more important. In the uk the superbowl is becoming quite large anyway, with various superbowl parties etc....
just because you dont get it, it doesnt mean alot of others dont enjoy it

Which is down to BskyB and not the bbc.
Broadcasting rights and the fact that sky are willing to pay large sums of money for them.
If the bbc bought the rights to the PL you would soon expect to see pay per view due to how big the contract is worth.
Its nice to see varied sport on tv, beats bloody dancing on ice crap

The only thing is, that if you think PL players have big wages, the NFL will make your eyes water

True, NFL players are paid alot more than our ponces, but in American, its an honour to play - if you don't perform, your replaced with someone who can - its as simple as that (and generally not by some foreigner) :)

Yea I know the guys in the NFL etc earn a hell of alot but they do train hard and take alot of hits etc. I feel they work harder. Footballers just annoy me tbh. Little skinny runts most of them that get paid to fall over and do not much else.
Ryan
7th February 2011, 02:38
The funny thing is that most NFL players could easily be quite high up on the world 100m rankings, theres a fair few low 10 guys.

I'd say the NFL season is easier because of the fact that a normal season is about 16 games long. Then also remember that you have offense and defensive teams so if it's an even sided game it would be a 50/50 split for them. But it far more demanding and grueling on the body with the tackles and high energy impacts. Alot of defensive linemans end up with messed up body's because they try to keep their bulk for their career but won't be able to shift it when it comes to an end
They get paid more because the audience loves the game, it's cultured round a weekend and even though it is brutal it's a family sport (our football is far from that) people sit out side the games and have good atmosphere.

Started watching it in the middle 80's when channel 4 were doing their coverage. If I remember correctly the "in" team then was the Chicago Bears. Then started watching again in the early 90's when the Dallas Cowboys were at their high with Troy Aikman and Emmitt Smith.
It is a pity that Channel 4 don't have the rights to show it anymore as it gave alot of us who didn't have Sky in the 90's a chance to watch the NFL. Also remember Five had the rights to the MLB but don't know if they still show it.

Was well worth staying up for. Im an Eagles fan at heart (used to live over there seen them many many times), but we all know they'll never make it big :P
Was rooting for the Steelers, but as said Packers pace themselves well tactically and physically

Really enjoyed the superbowl final, shame they didn't broadcast the entire season :(

Honestly think it's a gash sport.. Big pussies that are huge yet have to wear fucking protective armour.. In rugby you take it like a man.. the only difference is the tackles are a bit harder.
The other thing that pisses me off is there is no flow to it whatsoever.. it's terrible to watch, much like baseball, football has a flow and speed, this stop start shit is bollocks.

The hits are alot harder. Look at the extent of alot of injurys in the game. You tackle a man anywhere near off the ground in rugby and its a pen/sin bin. Yet wide recievers take those hits all the time.
Then theres the pace of the guys.
But then Rugby league players take more of a battering than union.

You got to play it to see the fun side to the game. I played for six months @ north port high school fl. When I came back to England and played rugby just didn't like it anymore always have a ball to throw about inmy car

I agree with the rugby statement, but if anything American Football is a pussy sport; the amount of padding they wear! If they were tackled rugby style and planted on the floor, they'd die. Plus they stop every 5 seconds and start again.

11th February 2011, 01:40
The tackles are harder in American football.. but that's because the padding facilitates that.
In rugby every game you will get fucked up (cuts bruises, people kicking the shit out of you in the scrums, studding all over your body) with only a gum guard to protect your teeth getting knocked out and maybe a cup :D.
Also rugby is a much faster paced game, and for me that's more exciting than this stop start business.

The thing with American Football is its full contact. That is... the whole point of the defence is to take the receiver or runner down as hard as you can (within reason, ie. restrictions on head to head). The padding is there to make the players 'invincible' and protect against injuries while still having the excitement of big hits. After watching a college (our division 1 team?) player get paralysed from the neck down - im all for as much padding as possible.
As for stop starting every 5 seconds - thats also the whole point! Its a very skilful, tactical game that manages field position, time and team strengths/weaknesses. Every play is well thought out depending on the score, time and who the momentum is with. For me, the stop / start managing is exactly what makes it exciting.
If you compare it to our football... you have an hour and half to sit through - in that time you have a ball that is kicked from 1 man to another man, *game stops someone rolling around* to another man back to another man *game stops again someone rolling around* to another man, hoofs it 20 yards wide of the net or out of the stadium *30 second break in the game*. That goes on and on and on like this with some Scottish commentator getting a hard on every now and again over something. If your lucky, you will get someone kicking it in the net a few times. And thats as exciting as it gets. Also, while these foreigners are running around - what are the rest of the team doing?? I wouldn't even call it a team game to be honest. 1 man and a ball - abit like golf.
Rugby is the same... I think its union(?) where they work hard for the ball - they get it back by their own line and kick it straight back to the other team? My dad says its all to do with field position, but surely you wanna get the ball and run hard? Anyway, like football the fact it goes from one team to another team and back again is why I find it so boring. You can't really compare rugby and american football tackles. In rugby you grab the legs, or body and bring them to the ground. Its totally different type of contact - which is a good thing if you enjoy rugby. At least it's a team game.
They're all different sports at the end of the day and everyone will have different views on them :)
