Had a bit of a scary moment last night going around a roundabout and hitting some diesel. Back end stepped out wildly i almost stacked the car.
Anyone else spun their car?
I'm a relatively new driver and wondered, what is the best thing to do when you feel it start to slide?

LOL Kinda tempting to touch the brakes when something starts going bad, i guess i did the right thing after all in turning into it.

When I had all my tyers on backwards it was like driving on ice, one time, I was comming off a roundabout into an S bend, someone decided to park on this bend, and another was coming the other way. Now as I came off the roundabout by rear kicked out, so I caught it and it went the other way, now I went through the gap of the parked car and the one coming the other way, sideways, No word or a lie the guy in the car looked at me as I was now facing his drivers door, his face was like "hold on a minute that's not right" Then as I pasted through the gap I blipped the throttle and it came back 'round and I carried on driving.
Now when it was icey me and some mates spent days messing in a car park, I recon if I didn't spend about a week spinning about and getting a feel for how it feels when the back goes out. I'd have binned it lol.

Foot down but if ya in 5th or 6th can get tricky.

i regularly struggle to pull out of a slide in 6th in my saxo.......
best advice is use initative, turn into the slide and power out of it if possible, but sometimes if its a tight roundabout or whatever your safer turning away and jamming on your brakes and letting it spin on the spot, it all depends on your situation etc

Pretty fun playin with oversteer in a saxo lol

mine did 2 360s in the opposite direction when i steered into it then flew back wards into some trees I guess its just down to luck lol

because you either didnt put the power on, or didnt slowly let the wheel straight as you put the power on, you just overcorrected and fishtailed....

I wasn't even going that quick tbh, too many potholes in my area to go fast.
Not sure if it was a drain cover or just a slippy bit of road.
Either way, im glad it happened so that if it does again, i will know what to expect.

I once hit some snow on lane 3 of the motorway at 65-70mph and spun anti-clockwise through 2 complete revolutions across all 3 lanes and back in to the middle. Was convinced as soon as it started to spin that I was going to end up in the barrier but managed to steer out of the spin using opposite lock. No damage - although some numpty two cars behind me drove in to the person in front of them as they s**t themselves when they saw me start to spin.
Was certainly one to get the adrenaline pumping!
Best advice for spinning is DO NOT BRAKE, just lift off the accelerator and if you are able to, steer against it to stop it. To get a professional finish, don't forget to dump the clutch else you'll stall it

Put some budget tyres on your alloys. Hours of fun to be had going sideways round roundabouts, corners... straights. Best thing i ever did to my saxo was putting proxes all round :D

My recount was about spinning and I'd argue that if you're actually spinning, you don't want to be accelerating at all!

If you want to stop a spin you shouldn't be accelerating. You need to stop the wheels turning to stop it spinning. Once all the wheels are locked, a spinning car no longer pivots around its tyres, so it quickly loses its rotational inertia and just slides in a straight line.
You are right that oversteer can sometimes be created by "lifting off" and shifting the weight balance of a car, but it is not going to happen if you are spinning around in circles!
iluminusbutterfly
10th February 2011, 14:23
if you are spinning and you lift off you only make it spin quicker which will result in the driver being more disorientated, and the car going faster into things
if you keep accelerating and you put the steering wheel in the right place it will slow you down AND give you more control!

thats how i do it. try and correct it, and if it snaps/doesnt work, anchor up. have saved my arse a few times, usually leaves the car pointing obscure but i dont hit anything!

Perhaps if you don't believe me you'll believe Ross Bentley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Bentley):
If you experience an understeer skid, with the front end sliding or plowing towards the outside of the turn, the correction is simple. Just ease off the throttle, which transfers more weight onto the front tires giving them more
traction.

This applies EXACTLY to the situation I described when my front end spun out on snow/ice.

10th February 2011, 15:46
understear is the complete opposite to a spin, a spin is categorically catastrophic overstear
therefore you point is about as well thought out as listening to this:

A spin is just a rotation around an axis, regardless of whether it's caused by understeer or oversteer. This is a pointless argument now! The poor guy just slipped on some diesel.

are you for real? corse it matters! overstear spin is because the rear has not enough grip and understear is because the front has not enough, by your logic i should drift a rwd car and a fwd the same?
and weld the diff in a fwd car? good luck trying to get ANY cornering done

No mate, my front went wide and flung me immediately in to a spin (front left wheel hit deep snow and tugged the car anticlockwise). I backed off the accelerator about 0.5s later by which time I was facing the oncoming traffic and still rotating anti-clockwise.
iluminusbutterfly
10th February 2011, 16:32
then it wasnt understear that caused your spin, it was one of your wheels slowing down rapidly, thats not understear....
and i maintain if you had used the throttle it would of saved it quicker and easier

It actually sounds like most of these are going to be crashing and dying rather than drifting.
