i used to do it before i went in the army, great job and very easy to start up on your own once you have some experience, tips dont be scared of heights and always keep the logs to sell to people like local pubs with real fires waste not what not

Yes i'm studying arboriculture at the moment.
It is very physically demanding so you have to be quite fit i've found.
Can also be very expensive to get your CS tickets which are basically certificates of competance.
I would expect to pay around £600 for CS30/31. CS30 covers basic workshop maintenance and cross cutting timber, whilst CS31 covers felling of small trees up to 380mm in diameter.
Then you go onto CS 38/39 which covers aerial rescue from a tree and use of a chainsaw from a rope and harness. This will cost around £900.
Then you have to buy all you PPE such as
Chainsaw trousers £180
Helmet with ear defenders and visor £80
Gloves £30
Chainsaw boots £120
I have just bought my first chainsaw which cost me £530, definately worth it had loads of fun felling trees over the last few months. Its not all physical work though theres a lot of theory to learn which can be quite challenging.
Personally i would have a look at colleges in your area which offer arboriculture courses so you can decide whether you want to get into it.

great fun with the right people, hard work though but worth it at the end of the week, would love to give tree surgery a go!!

Try Sparsholt college really good for this, Something like only 2 or 3 places in the country that do the course and Sparsholt's the best apparently.
Done the 1st year then realized how hard it is finding a job in this sort of trade unless you know people who already do it etc.
Not a bad course end up doing a bit of everything Tractor driving, Brick laying (Tried telling me in case a tree you fell lands on one saves you forking out which I guess is true).
Really good money though, If you'r on call the money you make is ridiculous.
Tutor there always told me the best thing you can do is work abroad Canada etc for 6months and you would have easily earned enough to last you another 6 months till you go back.
Kind of wishing I stuck it out now :n:

A guy that was one of the regulars in my Ma's pub was a tree surgeon, was cutting a tree and the chainsaw kicked back and would have taken half his face off if it wasn't for him wearing a face guard.
Dangerous job, but as people have mentioned, it pays quite well....

I do landscaping mate and my boss is a tree surgeon i don't have certificates to say i cut down tree's lol but i cut them down, and in honestly its fun cutting them down but its not to great lifting all the shit later on, maybe look into getting chainsaw certificates and just going for it? My boss makes a fortune on trees like 150-200 quid per hour so there is money to be made in it :)

As said good money but hard to get into it and a ball ache with insurance. Just made £400 for two days work. Theres a fair few colleges that do it most agricultural colleges do the courses, but look at nptc http://www.nptc.org.uk/. I started out working for a forestry contractor and just do odd jobs now and then as im working on the farm at the moment. Also look into jobs with manweb and scotish power as they sometimes will pay you for doing the courses. Best thing I found is charge well under your prices at first get the experience under your belt you build confidence doing the jobs and a good customer base people talk about you to their friend thats how I get my jobs. And +1 on keeping the logs to sell to people, I usually charge for the tree and add about £70 on the price then tell them ill knock £70 off the bill if i take the logs sounds like your doing them a favour and you make £160 a load for them.
Hope that helps mate
