I'm peed off with these stupidly intense lights blinding me, to the point where I can't see cyclists/motorcyclists/pedestrians more than 10 feet in front of me, and the glare from behind is enough to set off a headache king kong would start ranting about.
If people truly need lights that bright, then I suggest they get themselves an eyesight test and a restricted licence from the DVLA because there is NO NEED for HID

I've had it a few times in my van coming up behind people they think I'm flashing them, I'm not it's just my lights are the same height As they're rear view mirror.

Blimey, drivers must have been driving blind before HID's came about, how did we survive!
Seriously, I'm not talking about how well HID lights the road for you, that isn't in dispute, I'm talking about how badly it affects other drivers vision on the roads and how that affects other road users

They don't if they are set up correctly like mine. It's the people that don't set them up right and have them aiming too high that causes issues! So in response to your thread, no HID's don't need to be banned if they are set up correctly.

The only bad ones are the wrongly adjusted ones and the ones on things like the Q7, X5's because of the height of them.

the HIDS poeple fit on old shit cars like ours dont blind me, you can still see but u kinda squint abit.
The ones that come on mercs and all the new cars do my head, they have self leveling things dont they? So it looks like theyre flashing poeple and they do actually blind me, im like a rabbit in a headlight.

Also HID's in non projector headlights can cause it.The light output just gets scattered everywhere.
Setting them up properly on a beam setter is what is needed. But even at that it isnt a 100% cure as its all down to the headlight design too.

The requirement and limits for low beam where intruded so that cars where safe to use at normal road speeds with other road users about. However technology moves on rather quickly. Even halogen bulbs have got almost twice as bright as when the laws where introduced. Gas discharge lights have gotten even brighter still often achieving three times what was calculated as a safe level.

theres a few around here that have the daft bright blue ones that blind every bastard. i can just about cope with OEM HID's as half the time the only ones that give you aggro are on a van/4x4!

Do your insurance company/DVLA know you suffer from light induced migraines? I've heard of some people fainting from this. Should you be driving at night if this is the case!?
As said, most of the issues come from the lux 4x4's like X5 an Q7 and Wayne wovers! These are factory fitted and have gone through numerous tests to prove them safe.

I used to drive a old 106 and a AX never had a problem. I still have my old school 205 GTI now and never had a problem with the standard headlights. I had a old Mini up until a few years ago that had old hat incandescent bulbs. That was not great but still drivable. Better then the 1950s motorbike I was on a few days ago. But again still had no real problems until some one was driving strait at me with much brighter modern lights.

I don't think it is anything to do with his eyes. It really does depend on your vehicle and what is behind you. When I had a MR2 is was so low that cars behind you where a nightmare. Most people on the MR2 owners club recommend tinting the rear window for this very reason. Even then the side mirrors tend to pick up headlights My Citroen tends to do it with taller vehicles or if some one has there lights all to pot.

HID's should only be in in projectors.
Light scatter aside, HID's in reflector lamps are just wrong.
They scatter the beam and piss everyone off who gets dazzled by them. Hence the reason why they are illegal and are only used by morons with a 'I don't give a fuck' attitude.

i avoid back roads in the dark for this very reason and only use them when no other choice as ive seen these type of lights almost cause several accidents.
remember while you are blinding other drivers you are putting yourself at risk of the other driver hitting you head on and if your in a saxo i dont fancy your chances but hell atleast you can see the other person as they plow into you mangling your saxo up and most likly killing you
but i must admit i am quite partial to full beaming people who blind me

They improve safety because now I can actually see where i'm fucking going!
If you need HID's to see where you are going, i'd go get an eyetest mate :y:
As for HID's, i can't stand them myself. Yes they might be safer option because you can see better but while driving past cars going down a dark road it does blind you something stupid. I had an Audi sat behind me on the way home last week from college, i have to drive down the A339 which is a dark windy road. It was so bad the glare in my mirror i had to move it! And doesn't help when quite alot of newer cars now have HID's which mean they are quite common now so getting blinded from both directions is not nice!
Why do people feel the need for them? Seriously, if you can't see the road with normal headlight you shouldn't be driving IMO :y:

No. No. No. The people moaning about them are the people that don't want to get blinded by other cars and to be able to concentrate on the road ahead without having to adjust all our mirrors or point of vision due to some lights that are just not needed. It only takes a second to crash if you take your eyes of the road. You might aswell shine a laser pen in my eye while im driving, that would be just as bad! I could quite easily afford to put some on my saxo, but what is the point of spending money when I can see perfectly fine with the lights i already have?
If standard lights are as shit as the people with HID's are making out, then i think you all need your eyes tested. And then please tell me why i haven't crashed in the dark yet?
OH wait..must be my superhuman night vision I have. I almost forgot about that :S

I was obviously slightly exaggerating when I said "with HID's I can now see where i'm going".. but the point I was getting at is that standard lights are absolutely awful. Makes me laugh when loads of people jump on the I HATE HID'S bandwagon.. If you don't like them, don't fit them.. Simple. There is always going to be people out there with HID's, there is always going to be people out there with new mercs/audi's with stupidly bright lights, there is always going to be range rovers out there that sit so high off the ground there lights shine directly through your car. At the end of the day mine were fitted correctly, they have been aligned properly so aren't aiming in the air and they have passed 2 legal MOT's :A:

There are like the people that ruteanly speed, drink drive, drive with out insurance or drive with out a licence. The sooner the police catch them all the better.

Everyone who is suggesting they can see the road fine and dont need to use there main beam with halogens on country roads are the ones that have there lights pointed up into the sky and blind oncoming drivers anyway.
If the Hids are set up correctly and aligned and dipped in most cases this can be much better than other cars with halogens that have the need to point them up to see how far they can shine.

I really don't. I normally have them pointing downwards, always wary about how I have mine set up because I don't like being blinded myself. It's really not that difficult to see. The only thing that would catch me off guard would be an animal in the road I reckon.

I'm peed off with these stupidly intense lights blinding me, to the point where I can't see cyclists/motorcyclists/pedestrians more than 10 feet in front of me, and the glare from behind is enough to set off a headache king kong would start ranting about.
If people truly need lights that bright, then I suggest they get themselves an eyesight test and a restricted licence from the DVLA because there is NO NEED for HID
thats just you being miserablecant wait to get some 8k i reckon

Yeah I don't like them either to be honest, I have a lazy eye which closes when bright lights hit it.
Normal headlights I can deal with but HID's just make my eye close and I struggle to see for the next few seconds so quite dangerous for me.
Nobody say 'you shouldnt be driving then', because my eyesight is perfectly legal to drive. I have one good eye and one which I struggle to see out of

I'm not debating the difference, I'm just saying I don't have a problem with the lights I have now, so see no reason to upgrade...

They don't if they are set up correctly like mine. It's the people that don't set them up right and have them aiming too high that causes issues! So in response to your thread, no HID's don't need to be banned if they are set up correctly.

I still don't see the point in these, most of the time I'm driving on street lamp lit roads so don't really need headlights to see anything and on country lanes I can see fine with standard lights on full beam.

hids only look right if they're in projector head lamps imo. Standard headlights send them beam all over the place and dazzle everyone.
Its mainly the cheap pikey ebay kits that are blue that tend to be the culprits.
standard headlamps (like saxo's, 106's) it looks gash
projector lamps (like the clio 182 has as standard with hid) looks good.
Surely HID's on say a cammed Saxo VTS will be useless as these are generally faster than the speed of light?

HID's are actually ilegal, they can in most cases fail the MOT aswell because they dont give off a correct beam patern and the light is sort of more hazy and points in all directions, somebody posted a link up on here somewhere of a tv show investigating them. its because cars that dont have HID's from factory dont have headlights to take HID's thats how its dangerous to other road users the way it scatters the light and dazzles other drivers. its a FACT they are ILLEGAL on a car that doesnt have them from standard/optional extra. all the aftermarket kits are illegal.

I agree with the OP. HID's should only be used with proper beam projecting headlights. The amount of times I've been blinded by a Astra or something just because of their HID's.
Leave the super bright lights to the cars they're intended for. Can't see with your normal lights? Get your fucking eyes tested!

perfectly reasonable. no reason that they would make them horrible and dazzle everyone

yes it is the way that they are set up thats bad, a headlight that comes from factory with non HID is not built to take a HID conversion kit, hense why they have been made illegal. they are dangerous to other road users in the way that the light is dispersed through standar headlights. end of.

H.I.D's in non projector headlights are the problem.
Even when set-up for MOT standards on a beam setter, the light is still scattered all over the place.
Workmate has them in his Bora. The light output shines all over the road.I swear ive seen owls drop from the trees.
Big 4x4's with HID's are quite annoying due to the light unit being higher up than a cars.

The problem is that the bright output kind of over powers the light pattern on the lens . Causes the light to spread everywhere.

My old Accord came with factory HID's and they were superb, with the S14a I've just fitted whiter, brighter bulbs.
HID lights aren't too much of a problem provided they aren't too bright and as mentioned they must be set up and adjusted properly.

It's the height of the lights too..
I've had it a few times in my van coming up behind people they think I'm flashing them, I'm not it's just my lights are the same height As they're rear view mirror.
When I was learning to drive I was waiting to turn right, and a van came towards the junction over a hill... thought he was flashing me so pulled out lol :panic:
