Ok i am 2 months away from my renewal, and i have currently a 9 month policy where you get a year NCB after that time, so in April (18th) i will have 3 years NCB but only having my license for 2 years 7/8 months.
Now i am seriously looking at a 2007 Mini Cooper S and trying to get quotes to see if its viable. but comparison sites obiously wont accept the details and my current insurer won't insure me on the car. don't really know how to get a quote to estimate the cost when i come to get the car.
thanks

Could it be that the "years no claims" after 9 months is only valid with the current company, like with Admiral's 10 month accelerator policy, the NCB is only valid with them because it's not a whole year?

They wont accept he has 3 years no claims as technically it shouldnt be possible because hes only been driving for 2 and a half years.
Just change the date you passed your test so that they will accept three years no claims, then it should work.

But if it's only a test quote to get a rough price then it doesn't matter, if he uses that policy, then it's void.

Ahhh I see, this is where the grey area on NCB for 10 month policies comes in.
My first two years were earned from 10 month policies with Elephant, my third year was on a 12 month policy. When I took out the 12 month policy, I said I had 2 years NCB. I read the T&C's and nowhere did it say that they didnt accept NCB earned from a 10 month policy, although I was old enough to have earned 2 full years by that point.
The thing that annoys me is that I got a letter from Elephant after my first and second years saying 'One Years No Claims Bonus' and 'Two Years No Claims Bonud' respectively. Nowhere on either letter/certificate did it say it has been earned from a 10 month bonus policy. Unless it states in the companies T&C's that they do not accept these then they are valid as a years NCB

Nope, i specifically asked that and i have written confirmation that it can be transferred to any company, and checked with 3 different people on the phone befre taking out the policy

Yeah i know but all quotes would be invalid anyway as its 2 months away.

Just for the quote you could make yourself a little older by changing your dob. You may have to wait 2 months until you Are old enough to have had 2 years ncb though

It is totally at the discretion of the new insurer whether they accept NCB earned on anything less than a 12 month policy. You'll probably find that most insurers do not accept it. Make sure you tell insurers when you are getting quotes that it is not genuine NCB you hold, if it comes to light after you have taken the policy it could cause you problems.

Hi ollie
One thing I don't understand is why my letters from elephant say one years ncb and mention nothing of it being from a 10 month policy?
How are companies allowed to advertise it as genuine ncb when apparently it's not?
Cheers

If you had a letter saying you had "one years no claims bonus" - why did you ring up and try and create problems for yourself? Why didn't you just send in the proof to your new company and accept your premium?

Hi Laurie,
it is a good question! It is certainly a good marketing ploy though.
You can understand why some insurers do not accept it.. NCB is awarded after a full 12 months of claim free driving, not 10, 9 or even 6 months.

Well by definition: One Years No Claims Discount ...
... would relate to One Years claim free driving :err:

I have 5 years NCB but have only been driving for 3 years in April.
NCB is nothing to do with how long you have been driving its how long you have held a policy and not claimed.

That's fine because the letters I have say one years no claims bonus, not 10 months no claims bonus :)
Luckily I'm with admiral anyway and they accept it

So you have paid for an insurance policy for 2 years and not driven then?

Eh?
Year one was a 10 month policy, got a letter saying one years no claims bonus
Same for year two, except the letter says two years no claims bonus
Third year was a 12 month policy and earned my third years no claims
Forth policy is with admiral on a 10 month bonus one which will be my forth years ncb in September :)
