Compressor? Well, you know them big tanks with a little engine on top that Bodyshops use when spray painting a car, thats a piston compressor.
When you put tyres on alloys, you would use a compressor to fit them..
The company I have got the new job with does the Engineering of these compressors all around the country, all the way to Scotland etc. They also have the contract for STS tyres to sort their compressors.
Its not to everyones taste, but its a job better than shelf stacking :)

Who you gonna work for ?
Worked in Aggreko alot over my years of workin and they are supposed to be "engineers" when they basically work in an overgrown mechano set.
Good luck if you are actually working on different types of compressors and fixing them rather than the Aggreko way.

Bedford Compressor Services is the company I will be working for :y:
How do you mean with the Aggreko bit? Sound like a bunch of cowboys from the way you put it?

23rd February 2011, 12:59
Nah they ain't cowboys ... Just the way the do stuff is to build up a repetative nature.
One guy works on the same machine doing every job until he knows how to put it together in his sleep and then when the guy decides to leave the place (mind you very unlikely ..). To me this causes a problem especially if you are teaching a young man a trade.
I'm on different sites all over the year doing various different jobs so I have learnt more on my trade than someone who is stuck doing the exact same thing everyday.
I'd say Aggreko is prob the biggest generator firm in the UK and one of the biggest in the world. I just personally feel that someone who is going to be a mechanic fitter should learn their trade elsewhere as working for them doesn't promote problem solving or "thinking outside the box"

The new Saving pot for TB's as the old one was destroyed over Xmas and a £900+ repair bill for the GTi lol
GMC's offer is tempting, not sure weather to save up, or smack it on the plastic :homme:

Wasn't trying to be condescending there Dom but when you are in the new job you will notice people doing their job a different way from others, some are faster but then get into trouble ahead where some take time to think about it.
If you can push for GMC why not splurge ?

ok, gonna have a rant here.
sounds to me like you're not an engineer. you're a technician.
and engineer is a professional qualification. i went to uni and did mechanical engineering. i am therefore an engineer. in a couple of months time i will be a chartered engineer.
people dont go round calling themselves doctors unless they are a doctor, so why do technicians and servicing personnel call themselves engineers?

Not necessarily true, I'm an engineer and I only hold an HNC. The IET membership now allows members who have held an engineering position for 5 years, instead of a degree.

the institute of mechanical engineers doesnt allow people to become chartered unless you have a suitable degree (most dont count) and enough years experience.

To the above, I will be put on a apprentice course to get Qualifications? The Job title is engineer, its only what was said during the talks we had, I didn't go into the finer details of "Oh your classed as this or that blah blah blah"..
