My engine temp light came on the other week and i found i didnt have alot of engine coolant i refilled and bled the system, last night the engine temp light turned on, again, and the engine made a very strange clicking noise from the fan area. I checked coolant, and it was fine but had bits of white flakes floating aroundin it, i also found the same sort of white dried substance on my rocker cover. ive been told that this may be the head gasket gone?. bt there is no change in power, just the engine temp needle goes all over the place.

hmmmm sound familiar. my temp needle used to go up to the top and drop back down again over and over again and the light never came on but head gasket was going. white/ brown flakes is oil mate. the white (mayo) under the rocker cover is also oil and water mixing, and you mentioned the white stuff being dry???
white smoke from your exhaust is a sign of water getn into your cylinders(headgasket going) if you look into your radiator while the car is running and there is bubbling but the coolant level does not drop then compression from the cylinders is leaking into the cooling system.
the head gasket seals three ports. cylinders, cooling system, and oil. if signs of any of the two mixng (apart from oil and cylinders as theyr ports arent beside eachother) it probably is your head gasket. also no warm air in the car is a sign as air in the system that has came from the cylinder will collect there.

white stuff? if i remember correctly if u see white stuff around near ur gasket u might be havin a gasket thats about to go..IF I REMEMBER correctly :p i might be wrong so dont let me worry u!
i had this problem before! all i needed was water in the radiator!!!! done all u mentioned and it still came on the damn red light! all u need to do is let the car run and keep feedin the radiator water..ull notice the water goes quiet fast..it will take hours! well thats what happened to me anyway just kept feeedin it water and let the engine run...by the way does ur heatin work?
white stuff around ur gasket is never a good sign btw :(

Heating works fine. Ive been told that it could be air lock also bt i dont think this is the case. Ive also checked the engine oil lid to see if teres any white specs underneath (headgasket) and alls fine. The white stuff was actually ontop off the rocker cover near the badge recess. Ill check the rad tomz to see if it bubbles. Cheers guys will come back with any advances any more ideas are welcome

No bubbles, still blowing hot air. The Temp light is really getting on my tits now, it makes my fan go off even when turned off it keeps going have to take battery off. Any ideas apparently it may be a sensor. Any more ideas?

Sniff your coolant,if it smells of petrol then the head gasket has gone.
Steve.

Engine coolant smells like coolant so i guess not head gasket. i have a video of the sound it makes any more ideas maybe engine temp sensor?

could be temp sensor, i went thru a puddle once and my light came on but the temp was fine i tested it by turning the coolant cap slightly if when the air gets out the temp goes back down you know its not a sensor because its reading when the temp goes down, if its the sensor the temp should stay inconsistent because its unable to read the temp.
