thanks to a hashed job by me of spraying the bonnet again, the rust has started to seep through the paint (thanks to the salty roads of winter!) and needs sanding back. an hour of sanding with 1200 wet and dry did naff all, and we have a belt sander but i have no idea how to use it.
so, do i just get some coarser paper and a chair and music to keep me occupied, or attempt to sand it with the belt sander?

I would suggest getting a new bonnet to be honest. However i know not every one is in a position to do so try coarser paper as i think a belt sander will scratch it bonnet to hell.

as above DONT USE IT and if rust is coming second hand bonnets are cheap

Or once you`e sanded the bonnet with courser paper and got all the rust off, spray it with acid etch primer, then top coat finishing of with lacquer.

new bonnet is out of the question. rust is only surface rust, nothing major (had been sprayed over awfully, then i touched it up but the paint only lasted so long) and i don't want to respray it for it to just rust again!

use 400 wet and dry. why the hell were you using 1200 paper? 1200 is normally used as a first cut paper for polishing.
