Hello all,
recently i got my car back from the body shop and in some places there is some orange peel affect on the paint work. What i was wondering was would i need to wet sand it then buff it or would a machine polisher work
thanks in advance.

If you haven't done it before I wouldn't go straight onto doing it on your paintwork bud.

If you've got your mind set on doing it yourself, have a go on some scrap panels first of all.

Although you'd also need a machine polisher to bring back the gloss of the clear coat.

And nope just machine polishing won't get rid of the orange peel. Tbh the body shop should've flatted and polished the paint after it was sprayed ?

If my car came back from bodyshop with a paint defect it would go straight back there.

+1 and if they say its nothing to do with them mention trading standards and they will jump on it.

quality control should sort the orange peel out before it even reaches you unless you took it to a back street garage who is only interested in your money.

but yeah it needs wet sanding with 1500 to 200 grit and polishing back up to a wet look finish. i wouldn't risk doing it yourself as orange peel can be caused by
lack of paint or poor application so chances are you will go through the paint or burn it.

They should of flat the paintwork back and machine polished it... that would get a majority of the orange peel gone... We use 1500 micro fine wet paper and G3 polishing compound at work to flat back all freshly painted cars.

shouldnt this be done after a week or so? im sure i read somewhere it shouldnt be done straight away but taken back to where it was sprayed a few weeks later to be flattened back and machine polished, i may be wrong though

can be done within hours of it being baked in the spray booth/oven

Bodyshops might tell you that so you pay and leave and they hope you'll forget about it. I went to pick my car up from the bodyshop and the guy said I needed to come back in 6 weeks after the paint hardened, I ignored him and asked a senior guy at the bodyshop an he did it the next day for me.

we tend to leave cars in our bodyshop for a good day or 2 for the paint to harden to a state where it can be flatted back and polished.
