Decent cars but not fast at all, only 103bhp they are pretty dead, about VTR speed but a VTS will rip one apart. Or look for one with a 1.7 Puma engine fitted, or even better a 1.7 FRP engine, or atleast one with a bit of engine work like Shawspeed cams
If you're getting one get a black one, the red ones end up fading, imp blue aint that great a colour, silver is boring
Black looks cool though decked on black wheels
Have a look on zsoc.com

Few friends own them, pretty decent little cars.
They've all been damn reliable aswell.
Seem about the same speed as the vtr.

Some of my mates have had them and they said if its not been well maintained they can suffer from bottom end engine failure which can lead to expensive repair or new engine as it will drink oil. Also very prone to rust.
There were 2 types of engines in them phase 1 and phase 2, the phase 2 i think had a stronger bottom end and other small changes, such as no center caps, a boot release button and a second lambda sensor. phase 1 - upto 2001. phase 2 - 2001 onwards i think.

I've owned two, great cars, feel better built than when I had my VTS, rust isn't too much of a problem, my last one is still going strong, it has been looked after well and has no rust other than a bit in the usual place (under door seal in bottom corner)
This is my old one and her progress since my ownership:

FORD - Fix Or Repair Daily...
I joke :P
Their not bad cars some will be more reliable than others depends how they have been treated etc. Fairly good looking cars but as said performance isn't exactly hot but nippy enough for normal driving. VTR is faster though;)

Ye the build quality was one of the reasons i want one instead of as vtr.
Not tht worried about speed i had a 1.1 saxo as first car so anything is a step up haha

You must have had a very high quality saxo! The gearbox doesn't feel like butter on the ZS, one of the advantages!

My boy.f has one in his opinion it's been very reliable not had any major mechanical work, it does tend to burn a fair amount of oil. go for the Phase 2 engine. plus the phase 2 had the nicer black interior rather then the grey in the phase 1. rust hasn't been a massive issue there isn't any on the body work but, when went for mot last week it needed a little bit of welding in the footwell, so would be a good idea to check under the carpet, also in the boot we found a bit of surface rust. as said check the sills as this is the most common place for rust.

very nice cars imo similar performance to a vtr

VTR is faster in all fairness. They're nippy but i never came across one where the VTR couldn't pull a lead on it.
As said, rust is the main issue.

All my friends have them
Imp blue is best colour IMO
But rust is a major problem and they're boring on motorways/link roads
They are at home in the lanes
I am going to buy one when the BMW sells unless I can get a decent vtr/s in part ex

rust, weak bottom ends on engine and head gasket problems usually caused by failure of the bulkhead mounted heater valve, its plastic and fractures leading to rapid coolant loss which can go un-noticed until its too late

cheers for heads up heard its better to get one with a phase 2 engine due to the bottom end of the engine being stronger, sound true?

I have owned My one for a year its a Phase 1 "w" reg Imp blue, Luckily for me im in the trade so i have had alot of work done to mine arch has been grinded treated etc, came back like but not as bad, Its had a Full service cambelt change etc etc and runs sweet as nut,
I even have a Piper cat-back and a panel filter on it which is a pumaspeed stage 1, It goes really well tbh alot of people on zsoc put the 4-2-1 manifold on with a decat and produce 115+bhp which will be on par with a stock VTS. Next up is probs a clutch and some suspension upgrades :)

ive had 3 haha only 1 had the rust issues, if there carefully looked after they are good cars, look for a phase 2 which is 2001 and newer as they had slightly revised engine and a darker interior and a few other bits. if you do go down the puma conversion route make sure its done to a high standard and not just chucked in.
my 3: (blue was puma'd)

we have a customer at work with one he had the puma 1.7 engine fitted and the cosworth package fitted from puma speed and a hell of a lot of other stuff fitted (over 7k ford nut) pushing out over 200bhp and its still not the best car in the world there more of a looker than a fast car.

No power, rusty, some knob ran into the boot then drove away lol main reason tho it was just too slow lol but that wouldnt bother you since your jumping from a 1.1 if you like them that go for it, theres a few nice ones in aberdeen mind you

A 1.7 VCT Puma weighs in at 1ton.Standard it has 123bhp and the Yamaha engine is a revvy little unit.Like for like it would be on par with a standard VTS/Gti ime.

1110 kg The fiesta is heavier than the puma so i dont think you would get full power? could be wrong

The puma engines don't see that good Gains tbh most aren't running more than 160bhp and the zetec engines do not like boost at all lol
Also any real ford owner knows to stay the hell away from pumaspeed
