compressors go for a clark one from machine mart as parts are cheap and easy to get anything over 50/ capacity will do you for spraying also you want a oil free compressor with a water trap.
As for a gun you pay for what you get devilbiss and sata are by far the best. cheap ones don't atomise the paint well so give you a orange peel texture. For painting cars you want a gravity fed gun as they don't use as much paint and you have less waistage.
you will also need a airline and fittings depending how long and how much pressure you want them to hold there pretty cheap.
as for the kits if your looking for anything like a decent finish stay away from them as there made cheap and give you a cheap looking finish. but at the end of the day its up to you but i see it as a investment as there is nothing you cant do with a good compressor.
