Corsa 1.3 CDTI, I think they are insurance group 2 or 3. Well the old insurance groups no idea new one's.
For your budget can you not stretch to a Lupo 1.4 TDI or even a A2 TDI.
Uncle has an Audi A2 1.4 TDI and I don't know if anyone has heard what them 3 cylinder diesel engines sound like but they make a really nice unique sound lol and they are awesome on the juice.

306 hdi! they can be made to be soo torquey. i prefer driving the missus hdi to my gti6.
knowing its still doing 45mpg driven hard. and to be fair they are one of the best chassis out there, youd get a minter for 2k too!

DTurbo or HDi 306 dont worry about mileage the engines are almost bullet proof my car is on 100k and it still pulls well only things ive changed on it are cambelt, water pump and ARB links. Also as someone has already said for 2k you'd get a minter of a 306.

306 dturbo or hdi.
Get a dturbo with a bosch pump and it'll run on veg oil, for another 50 quid you could get yourself upto 140brake, possibly more. You'll be lucky to find one under 100,000 miles but i can assure you that's hardly broken in. Mines on 146k and going strong, have worked on many others, including a reliable 150bhp (ish) on a 130k engine.
Just keep it serviced and you'll be 'reet.

the missuus astor grey hdi has just ticked over 223k miles! and actually its very healthy still! if there serviced right the miles dont matter. ive worked on airport taxi 406s that are on 500k ........ as much as that sounds like pure bollocks i assure you its tottally genuine.

Depends really, if you plan on keeping it for awhile I would maybe get a bora/lupo.
If not I would get a 306
