Could be your postcode, check the sticky at the top of the insurance section and post back what yours is.
1.2k does seem excessive for your age and experience
Any NCB?
Tried all comparison websites?
Parents on as named drivers?

Admiral have always been good to me. They just quoted me £600 on my 90bhp passat, 3rd party, so I rang em and asked em to change to fully comp and set excess at £500, requoted at £480. Try that?

20 yr old, 1 NCB, driving 2.5 yrs, fully comp, £850 with admiral multi-car (also includes named driver on rover 25 1.4 16v twin cam) this was £1100 when my dad was going to be the main driver and I, the named driver...switched it about and hey presto! cheaper for me to insure as main driver :D ...was paying £650 for rover by myself the previous year, so £200 more and i get a car which most insurance companies want me to pay £1500 for third party only but with admiral multi-car, that has been more or less halved :D...you NEED to do your homework though...insurance companies (esp admiral) won't just give you the best and cheapest way to insure your vehicle.

this might be because the insurance rating is now out of 50 instead of 20 and this just seems another way insurance companies can increase premiums :n: VTR is 21 out of 50 (previously 7 out of 20)

As said admiral are good providing you have driving experience (which you have). Cheapest I could get on my old vtr when I passed was £3K, when I turned 18 I cancelled my policy and with just 10 months experience they quoted £1600! Thats at 18, A area, on road, with buckets lowering and alloys declared.
