View Full Version : vts - is it worth breaking or waiting?
ive got my cammed vts in the for sale section and need a sale, as i desparately need something bigger (wifes pregnant) im considering just buying something bigger and breaking the vts.
what are peoples views on this? i dont want to break it as its got a long MOT and its low mileage (jan 2012 and 73k) but there doesnt seem to be any interest in anyone buying it.
ive worked out (roughly) the following, not counting the little odds and sods:
tax 100
exhaust 100
cams 175
wheels 50
interior 50
vt trims 50
skirts 20
headlights 40
driveshafts 40
gearbox 50
cd player 50
full icv 25
coilpack 20
calipers 80
spoiler 15
have i missed anything?
am i doing the right thing?
Yes breaking it is worth it.
More money to be made.
And you've left out loads.
I've made loads of money off mine already, probably almost what I could have sold the car for and I've still got loads of the car still left.

What's it worth as a whole car?
Add the engine,& rear axle to your list.
Remember it will take time to split and sell and the money will come in slower as well! Also you will end up with the shell to dispose of!

If you've got the time and space its worth it, but you've got a full time job and a small driveway it gets tough. And then you're left with a shell at the end of it which are hard to get rid of and loads of little bits of plastic that no body wants.
How much you got it up for?
What did you do, just strip it all out then get the shell collected by a scrap merchant?
I suppose the only problem is the hassle of posting stuff all the time, due to me being in scotland its a bit more difficult for people to collect.
Im also debating whether its easier to sell the engine and box in a oner or just stripping the cams out (is £175 a reasonable price for them?), but that leaves me with a useless engine.

Well ive just broke my car and it took a week to sell everysingle thing off it. Ive made about £2300 off it and still got spares left. If I sold it as a whole car I doubt it would have sold for anything more than £1400! So that kinda shows how selling as parts is more worthwhile, and that car wasnt even fully loaded with mods.
Only bad thing, is it takes more time and its hard to get them sent off as soon as you would like with work etc

£1000, which imo is still pretty cheap considering the work i just have had no interest, with the exception of swaps for crap cars. Id probably consider offers for it to save time, but to be honest its not in the best condition. Tailgate is scratched and has about had it, some other odds and sods, and ive just got sick of throwing sensors at it to try and cure an idle problem.

how long have you had it up?
my bf was selling his cammed vts as im pregnant, identical to your situation aha
it was up for AGES before anyone bought it. pistonheads premium advert got rid of it in the end, no chance of selling on here, too many dreamers.
i dont think id have had the time and patience to wait for him to break it then sell all the parts for it to get another car as needed to find a replacement intime for baby. have you tried px'ing it at all?

I've let someone down badly this week :n:
Had me in a right state.
Its not dependent on me selling it for me to get something else though to be honest. I could go out and buy something today, and SORN this saxo while its getting stripped.
Am i more likely to sell the cammed engine complete or stripping the cams? I dont have a crane so someone would have to collect it after i disconnect it all.

I'd leave the cams in the engine, and the gearbox on, then bang it on ebay. "Approx 150bhp VTS engine" People will lap it up on there.

cant you keep it, sorn it, and save it til you can afford to put it back on the road as a toy, you just mentioned you could go out and buy something else today?
I just dont want it anymore. Its not for me.
What sort of price should i be selling the engine complete and box? (ie everything from the downpipe up, manifolds, inlet, sensors, loom, ecu etc)

I'd say £450-£500
That high? Didn't know it would go for so much tbh.

Don't be a pleb and break it for parts. Its not worth the time and hassle at all. Only if its fucked break it for parts, if its perfectly running then just keep hold of it till a buyer comes along, remember, a perfect advert in the right place will sell any car.

Well if you think you could break the engine, £175 for cams, £200 for engine and £100 for box, you've still got a wiring loom and ECU in your pocket. So I'd say its worth that much.

i doubt the engine would get 500 tbh
if you do sell it, i find selling parts on ebay sell for more than on here (however you do pay fees :n:)

If its like mine and the idle problem uncurable id say the best thing to do is torch it and claim.

if you do it properly you can expect over £1200 for all the parts plus scraping the shell

More money breaking any car, as a whole its worth less as it may have problems, or no mot or no tax, little things like that depreciate it.. so selling parts from it is the easiest way.

I broke mine and again got a lot more back than I would if I'd sold it as a whole car. If you've got the space and time I'd recommend breaking it up, parts sell much faster than cars, took me a couple of months to leave the shell, which the scrappy still gave me £50 for.
