You don't legally need to have a spare wheel, but if you do then it has to be road worth. So yeah just take it off and carry some tyre weld (y) saves weight too.

Im not too sure about on the road but it can be buckled, rusted and have cheese holes everywhere so long as its held on securely onto the car come MOT time.

The tyre on my spare wheel is bald - has gone through 3 MOTs no problem.

I was under the impression they aren't checked as part of an MOT - as long as they are secure, it's fine.

It does not have to be road legal. It can be in any state as long as it's held securely. Only "road wheels" need to be legal.

If you were to put it on and use it, then it becomes illegal. Carrying it is not.

curious. I thought they had to be in decent condition. Otherwise whats the point?

taken from that site

Note:
The condition of the spare tyre is not part of the MOT.

so guess it isn't necessary then :S
