hello i have a saxo vts on a 51 plate.

ive just started hearing a strange whir-ing noise coming from either under the dash infront of the drivers seat or just in the engine bay im not sure exactly where its coming from

it only does it when i lift off to slow down, not when breaking, it only does it every now and again.

i cant feel any odd shakes or anything. my fuel gauge decided to stop working but then came back to life ( could be unrelated)

also the engine management light is on but thats because of my de-cat. the fault finder shows some kind of fuel fault, possibly the top lamba sensor.

any idea's??

cheers

It sound's like it's the clutch release bearing (thrust bearing)

If it makes the noise when you lift off the accelerator, to me that sounds like a driveshaft problem. Check the cv boots for any splits/oil coming out

if it was the driveshaft you would feel it wouldn't you? thrust bearings do it when you lift off the throttle
my car was doing the exact same thing at it turned out to be the clutch release bearing

thrust bearing? is that a big job to replace or not?

i dont think itl be the driveshaft as i had the driveshaft housing sorted last month and the mechanic would of noticed it wouldnt he and i have not noticed any fluid underneath the car, its not used everyday.

it doesnt happen as soon as i lift off its afew seconds after its a v strange noise but like i said the car doesnt shake or rattle at all.

i noticed the gear stick squeaks as you go into 2nd but not any other gears.

cheers again

yeah it's quite a big job, it's next to the clutch so gearbox off job if you do change the thrust bearing you might aswell change the clutch if it's not had one changed recently, as you're there anyway :S
if you change it yourself it'll only cost you the parts clutch release bearing £25 and if you change the clutch about £80 for the whole kit but if you go to a garage it'll probably cost a fair bit

ah right ok then nice one, i wont be able change it myself i dont think, dont have the tools tbh.

it had a gearbox and cluth fitted at about 69k its on 91k now.

best get saving then lol, spent nearly £700 2 months ago on repairs.

happy days
