View Full Version : Write off car while abroad

Hello gentlemens,
I need an advice from somebody, who is familiar with this, as I´m not.
I bought Seat Alhambra about 1 month ago. I got it properly insured, also I have my new V5 documentation on my name.
The reason for buying that carwas, that I want to use it as company car in London.
I already travelled with it back to Slovakia, just to finish my masters at university and I was plannig to come back in London on 10th of June. But the lucky situation back at Slovakia gave me big chance to start own enterprise in here.
So the question is, can I manage to write off that car in Britain and even to cancel my insurence from Slovakia? Or I will be forced to travel back in Britain, just to do it?
Advantage is, all paperwork has my colleague, who is still in Britain. I´ve travelled just with green part of old V5 and with insurance number written down.
I can provide more accurate info, if it will be needed.
BTW, car still has MOT and ROAD TAX until end of June. And I can sell it in Slovakia for "parts and repairs" with the similar value as back in Britain as a whole proper car.
..::THANK YOU VERY MUCH IN ADVANCE::..
Hello badmenz
Id would personally write it off into a brick wall mate at 45mph to make sure its done properly. Then claim on your insurance. This is the advice you will get from everyone.
Or set it on fire, thats a good one that many people do. Devvo tried it once.

Cant you just cancel insurances, sorn the car then when it runs out of MOT it runs out and thats it job done.
Then sell it for more as a whole car.
Declare it as sorn, then sell it for parts in slovakia?
this thread is retarded, and you went to university?!

this thread is retarded, and you went to university?!
And haters gonna hate...sorry about that, but I cant imagine how would you gain information about something, which is completely new for you...
thats why I am asking...
Basically there is no point for me to travel bac 1000miles, just to sell the car. Best for me is to tell british DVLA or whoever, that the car will not be driving on UK or Slovak roads. In my country, you need to send registration plates back, to prove it is written off.
And if there will be some complications I dont even want to put my colleague adress in troubles. Because it is registered on my name and on adress, where I used to live. /renting/
Appreciate everyones help..
On the V5 registration documents, fill out the SORN section and send it to the DVLA. Once you have sent this in do not use your car on the roads. Sell it to someone to be trailored away to be brocken for parts etc.

like writing it off the database - basically scrapping

The best thing would be to give the car to a friend. You need to fill out the v5 and send it off. Then they can scrap it, sell it or whatever.

Get your V5 sent to you. Download the tax rebate DVLA form from the website. Send off your tax. Fill in the V5 as scrapped. Post to the DVLA. Job done.

Writting off is similar in Slovakia. After write off you are not allowed to drive the car, because it does not exist anymore in database. The car can be disassembled for part or whatever.
And I basically cannot give it to any friend, while I´m in Slovakia. We have quite different laws than in UK... Can I just make it write off like for export from UK or something?
Really dont want to travel all the way back.. And the main reason for me, want to write away from that particular adress in Britain

Scrap yard has to acknowledge the scrap of a car though dont they? In which case just hand a scrap yard some cash to do it on the sly. Destroy the plates of the car and grind off the VIN and sell the car as a whole but to be sold as parts in slovakia. That way if the car does find its way back onto the roads there will be no trace of its identity.

English is clearly not the original posters mother tongue but to me and by the looks of it every other poster the situation this guy is in and his question are clearly understood. If he wasn't interested in doing it the right way, it would be UK taxpayers that foot the bill to investigate/resolve it so his attitude should be encouraged - NOT discouraged like some people have tried.
Official answer to the problem is here:-
How to notify the DVLA you are 'permanently exporting' your car:
When a vehicle registered in the United Kingdom (UK) is taken out of the country for 12 months or more, it’s regarded as being permanently exported from the UK.
You can tell DVLA by filling in the section ‘Notification of Permanent Export’ (V5C/4) of the vehicle registration certificate (V5C), and send it to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1BD. Keep the rest of the registration certificate, as you may need this to re-register the vehicle abroad. Your vehicle will become subject to the legal requirements of the new country when exported.
If you don’t have a registration certificate you’ll need to get a certificate of permanent export (V561). Download and complete the V756 ‘Application for certificate or permanent export’ and send to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AG.

You don't have to drive back here to do it - you can stay and concentrate on your 'enterprise'!

AGAIN, thank you very very much for your help. I really appreciate your help. Everyone expect few, try to help. Now I need to take my time to read everything from DVLA which posted "russledav". Even "Kyza" gave a helping hand via messages. And a lot of you another guys... Again, thanks.
I need to find out what are my possibilities and if I´ll have any other question, I know where to ask.
And why I was asking in here? I used to have perfect blue Saxo 16V, which was my little baby. So that is why. Inner atraction to certain group of people;)
And you´re "familiar" with british laws. For me it is "spanish willage" in this kind of situation..

I've scrapped cars without officially taking them to a scrapyard. You can declare that they are disposed of yourself. I've got cars I crushed but the v5's have been kicking around on sorn for years and I've finally bothered to make their scrapage official.

So, I´ve read everything what is provided within those documents in DVLA. It is not so difficult, now, when I see it properly. Just few more question. Which date should I state in date of export, when the car is already abroad? Date when I left UK?
Another thing is, can even my colleague sign those document and send it to DVLA. Unfortunately, V5 is in Britain as I mentioned, I´m back home.
And when should I cancel my insurance, before sending, or just to be covered in any case, just wait until the confirmation from DVLA will be recieved? I´m paying monthly, every 15th in certain month. So it means for me to lost another 140quid. But I´ll be still covered if something went wrong.
And the really last thing is, can anyone from you provide AUTOCHECK? Just to be sure, that vehicle is not with outstanding finance, or something. I just find it out, when I was reading throughout pages on DVLA site.
Thank you for your help...

tbh, I saw much worst things around britain, than a guy, who wants to sort thing out in "proper way"..
OT: I used to work in Oxford as a student sequentially three summers. TWO summers they taxed me with emergancy tax. And no one bother to sort it out. Consider is as refund for your post...

That's fair enough but i want to know from Kyza why i'm a 'typical chav saxo driver' from a post that has no relation to being a chav ..
