Anybody had any experiences of these cars, the mpg and tuning possibilties entice me to be fair, they look quite smart as well ...

The words "look quite smart" and Skoda Fabia don't really go together lol.
Decent little cars that if mapped properly can give some bigger cars some trouble, not sure on the handling front mind.

Skoda will always be synonomous with the image of 'shit cars'
Personally I do like the look of the range made in late 2000's
The newest ones are back to the shit car look imo

I have loads I can say about these brilliant little cars.
VA Group were very clever when they "trialled" their first performance diesel hatch before rolling out to virtually every other sports type car on their books.
Seriously tunable. Quicker than a Vtr and mini cooper in standard form. Well equipped. Reliable. Solid. Desirable (2nd hand prices are well above that of the octavia Vrs). I could go on and on...
The only real problem you'll have is if you increase power as the standard clutch is only good for about 260-280lb/ft of torque.
I've seen a few with basic mods and a remap running 180-190bhp and 300lb/ft of torque!

a friend of mine has had one for years, he spent quite a bit on it and it had it running 260bhp and crazy torque for ages, he blew it up at the nurburgring last year though and has since rebuilt it and got a bigger turbo. Haven't seen it on a dyno since but it has been spec'd for over 300bhp. It does go very well but then it is far from standard now however he still returns over 50mpg around town :fcuk:
I personally think they command too much money for what they are. Don't be put off by people saying, 'oh but it's a skoda' it's basically a VW so the build quality is the same.

I know the jakes (the silver one) is a 1.9 TDI, he has had it mapped, slammed on coil overs, some body work done on it and other things and think he said it was pushing about 230bhp :S or something like that!
I'd have one myself if i could afford it!

I have a seat ibiza tdi with same engine as fabia vrs (pd130). The performance mods are endless but once you have got a stage1 map (roughly 180bhp and 300lbft torque) things can get costly. As clutch is only able to take around 300lbft
My tdi is now running 242bhp and 346.8lbft torque. But it wasn't cheap to get this far.

I've got much respect for skodas.
My old man is still running his 2001 Octavia vRS which he has had since new, he had one of the first models that arrived in the UK. Now its done 170k+ miles and on the whole it has been very reliable. Still feels really nice to drive, much better on the motorway than my car.

As for the Skodas, theyre awesome cars for the money. i've been in a few as a neighbour works at our local dealership.

I can safely say, that my BMW outhandles my old VTS on billie grpNs. And pretty much equal to a mates 200cup.
And to call RWD boring? You is crazy boyyyy
For you to make such a bold statement, you'd have had to have driven both.

So we've gone from talking about a Fabia VRS too talking about how Gibbo hates it and would prefer his beemer over it. And now we're onto how a beemer is better than a saxo.
Gibbo's beemer is nice if you're into old school beemers, although at the risk of looking like an indian drug dealer in birmingham.
Fabia VRS' are nice for a 5 door diesel made by VW pretty much. Look far better lowered and are easy to tune.
Saxo's are tin cans with a bad reputation but are quite fun to drive at the same time and cheap to run/mod.
Back on topic, for a five door diseasal, Fabia VRS are a top option :)

How often do you service it?
And for the average driver, I would say tyres are the most regularly replaced parts on a car, besides from the fuel/oil.

It'll get serviced as much as my saxo did. By myself, so no extra costs there
Tyres, every 10k or so, and wear more evenly due to better weight distribution.
Tax, cheaper than a VTS
Insurance, the same as my VTS
Fuel 30 - 40mpg or less if I drive hard, same If not better than the VTS
Parts, cheaper on eBay / forums than saxo parts and less Likley to break.
Running costs are cheaper as you can see in the BMW

Was thinking it is close to being called "a classic" but guess not now that I looked at the definition :P
The HM Revenue & Customs define a classic car for company taxation purposes as being over 15 years old and having a value in excess of £15,000.

Servicing yourself must save a lot. Average Joe would take it to the garage and be left with a three figure bill. Newer car so I understand why tax is cheaper.
Insurance depends on the person obviously. Fuel eco same.
Parts are cheaper than saxo parts? Find it hard to believe but you do your own work so must know.

Yeah, found it hard to beleive too. But I guess there's so many BMWs on the road that parts are easy to come by.
Seems theres not many standard saxo parts for sale these days, most I see in the for sale section are mods. Where as there aren't millions of mods for the BMW Market so I guess that explains why you can find pretty much any standard part you need.
Saying that, my steering wheel is a bit tatty, and finding a good second hand one below £80 is bloody difficult lol
MiniGibbo
8th July 2011, 19:50
I have to disagree about BMW parts beig cheaper, paitents dont last five minutes unless you buy the likes of lemforder or nissens and then they're cheaper than oem but nowhere near as cheap as saxo parts.
As for aftermarket parts for bmw's theyres shit loads, I can't think of anything you can't "upgrade"..
If you need a wheel dude i have a mint mtec 3 wheel off an evo that I'm going to put up for £75 plus delivery...
Ashleyp
8th July 2011, 19:53
I mean second hand BMW parts from cars breaking etc.
Didn't say there was no mods, just seems to be less in for sale sections than here.
And, I can justify paying that much on a standard steering wheel when I can get a suede OMP replica and boss for less money and end up with a nice chunky bit of suede lol. Evo wheels go for silly money :(
MiniGibbo
8th July 2011, 19:58
Aftermarket wheels look so out of place in the e36 cockpit though...
BMW forums arnt as active as here, they're nowhere near the same scale which I think plays a big part in how many forsale adverts etc.

The m3 is the don, I don't need to explain that one lol.
But the 325 sport just lingers in the middle for people who want more power than the Is but can't afford an m3, similar to a e36 328 sport I suppose..
Not that theyre not good looking or a rewarding car to drive, I just personally can't see me ever owning one.

Struggling to see how anyone can say these cars look good? They just look terrible imo.
They're big and bulky and don't really look like they were ever designed for a 'sport' model, only for old people. Standard they really aren't anything special.
For someone who wants one of these, what's your reason? There are better cars out there in the same price range. The only reason I would consider one of these is the fact they are in a low insurance group?
