View Full Version : How your job affects insurance
So come the end of July, when I finish 6th form and enter the working world, it would probably be a good idea to inform Admiral of my occupation change to avoid being bent over by them at a later date should I need to claim.
To make sure I wasn't in for a bit of a shock come my renewal, I decided to get a quote based on my current details as a student, then one as a financial advisor (that being my most likely career path at this point in time)
As it stands, I'm 18, male and have a 1.1 Forté with alloys, exhaust and lights all declared. On multicar TPF&T, I'm paying around £630.
My first quote, with my occupation being "Student - College, living at home" was:
£703.76
Not so bad, considering this is without multicar.
After changing my occupation to "Financial Advisor":
£693.16
Ok, still not too bad, but once I realised that changing your occupation could make a noticeable difference, I tried a few others, just out of interest. The highest quote I could get was for a chef at £910.46.
That means your job alone can affect your insurance by over 30% (well, with Admiral at least.)
I'm still yet to find anything lower than the quote I got as a financial advisor, but I'm actually amazed that your job can affect your insurance so much.
Would be interested for people to share their occupations and how much it puts their insurance up/down!

Yeah I found this, im a 'Managing Director' apparently, saved me a few bob but lets just hope it doesnt bite me on the arse if I need to claim! lol
I suppose there is a difference between being er... "creative" with your job title and outright lying. Although I've never had to claim myself, from what other people have said, I've never heard of a case where the insurance company have had to verify the drivers occupation.

My mate told me he is thinking about putting himself down as an Undertaker on his next insurance policy, he is actually a Sparkie...
Electrician: £700.23
Undertaker: £693.16
You'd think someone on their way home from a day of handling dead people would be more distracted than a sparky, and more likely to crash. How insurance confuses me :S

My occupation is "Beautician" LOL. I'm actually an apprentice front of house pub manager but that gives an overall increase of 16% with Co-Op. :(

Then again, if anybody ever checked, they might wonder why he's taking pliers, screwdrivers, cutters and drills to deal with dead people O_O

im a chef with admiral, i FUCKING NEW that my job w as bumming me over.
worse still is the fact that im on a multicar policy paying 1600 a year on a 1.1 so consider yourself seriously fucking lucky.
Even if you take the 30% off that for you being a chef, still leaves you around the 1100 mark. Is it just that you don't have any NCB, or do you spend your free time playing dodgems on the roads?
If neither of those, yeah I do consider myself pretty lucky with my premium! :D

probably the F* postcode that i live in.
dont play dodgems but i coincidentally did just kill my car last week :( in haste not racing 1.2 punto "sports" l0l :homme:
Haha, strangely I was in a Saxo/Fiat "Sport" accident last week too, although not in my own car. Definitely feeling some sort of French/Italian road-rivalry here.

Video's been removed, but I can pretty much gather it involved a certified sausage jockey with lexus lights (and VTR badge on a furio?) "racing" an equally awesome punto . Your post makes a bit more sense now.
Maybe we're just too boring over here, seeing as neither of our car killings were the product of watching too many Fast and Furious films :P

my insureance told me my job was one of the highest risk... hmmm i a delivery driver..
i say really i on the road all the time so really experienced and have a gnvq carry and deliver goods 1,2,and 3 inc road safety training from the company...
they sed yes but insureance companys think of it as yes you are better drivers then most but driving all day ect ect every week gets tiring there for u drive all day then at the end you jump into your own car but studies show you as a professial driver are more likly to crash

Noticed the longer you say you have had the car the cheaper it is , a year or so can lower it by over £100 , Dont know if youd get pulled up about it though

Mine dropped when I went from outdoor pursuits to office work :)
Not just me who found this then! Also, as someone else pointed out, being married seems to affect it too. When I changed my marital status to "married" it went down a fair bit. You'd think with the added stress of marriage you might be more inclined to crash... ;)
Just got a quote for my current 1.1 and I'm 18 and was quoted £1400 if I'm a bus driver, or £1650 if I'm a administration manager, or £1700 if I was a courier - nondriving.
If I worked as 'Kitchen staff' I'd be looking at £1900...

I'm loving no longer being in car sales, no more paying through the nose for motor trade. I can now drive other cars 3rd party if needed as well.

I'm a chef in a 5* hotel, though working upto 80 hours a week at the best of times its a well known fact that the cheffing industry has a problem for drugs (mostly powders) and drink, out of the 15 chefs i work with i know 12 that regulary do onne of the two, and if you not drunk or off your face your just tired as fuck driving home so you can't win.
My insurance is twice the price than if i had a normal job.
This problem doesn't happen to the cunts that work in weatherspoons that call them selves chefs though, just real ones!

Picking an occupation which closes matches yours is fine but point blank lying could get you into trouble if you need to claim
Anything which affects the quote price needs to be answered honestly, there is a reason they ask the question!
