So i'm going to pick up a VTR this evening. It has expired tax. If i was to buy tax right now would the tax disc end 31/5/2012 or 31/5/2012?. Basically will the issue me a tax disc for 12 months + 9 days or will i miss out on 21 days ?

You'll miss out on 21 days.

Pretty sure if you buy tax today it will start 1/5/11 and will expire 1/5/12

I would check as there has been a recent change regarding this.

Will be on the directgov site.

When to apply
If your tax is due to run out at the end of the month, you can renew it from the fifth day of the month.
If your vehicle has been untaxed, because you’ve just bought it, the tax disc has run out or a SORN is in force, you can tax from the first day of the month in which you apply.
If you want the tax disc to start on the first day of the next calendar month, you cannot tax your vehicle more than two days in advance.

From DirectGov

If the tax hadn't expired, I believe you can renew it to the next month.

If your taxing fresh, then you have to lose your 21 days.
