I have just read the new laws coming into place regarding uninsured vehichles. I am absolutely disgusted. I own a Yaris 1.3 SR and i am trying to sell it, and as my insurance ran out i cant afford to insure it, as i am expecting to sell it within the next month. I do not own a drive and i cant afford a garage! so i cannot put it anywere and declare it off road! I have road tax which i think should make it fair for my car to be parked on the street. I understand the risks that if someone hits it while its parked there i cannot claim for damages. If i cant sell the car im gonna be stuck with it!!!! A

Also aparently you can be fined if you have no insurance, even its parked on your private land (ie a drive or in a garage) if its not declared off road!!!

Im furious!!!

What do you think???

they need to sort out the overpricing over insurance before they bring any more fucking laws in.

yea its old news but its still fucking daft but i can also see where there coming from in trying to stop uninsured vehicles being on the road but are they going to go and look at every vehicle that hasn't got insurance???

Not an old law as such; the white paper was in the process of going through parliament a while back (probably the story youre reffering to). now it's an official piece of statute legislation.

will it reduce uninsured drivers? Nope
will it reduce premiums? Nope.

yea its old news but its still fucking daft but i can also see where there coming from in trying to stop uninsured vehicles being on the road but are they going to go and look at every vehicle that hasn't got insurance???

theoretically, it should be quite effective.

the DVLA will have a database of every car that is uninsured and not declared sorn, so should easily be able to see who to punish.

but, whats to stop someone declaring their car sorn, having no insurance and driving it? it won't be flagged up on the system, and theyre obviously not worried about the consequences as they wouldn't be driving without insurance in the first place if they were.

I was reading this earlier, I don't get the "what if you're selling your car bit", 'cause you'd have to insure it even though you're selling it and not driving it? which is pointless

Thank God my insurance is only £70 a month :)

You dont have to have insurance to sell a car? Im selling it to a friend whos seen it drive, hes been in it? just waiting on him being paid in a month? Why should i have to insure something im not going to be using???

What happens if your car is broke? I had HGF on my MG ZR a while back, and it took me 3 months to save the money for the new engine. The insurance had to be cancelled so i could afford the engine!!! It had road tax, mot etc, and it was imposible for me to drive it? Pisses me right off this like.

Where do you stand if you buy a car for your son/daughter/relative before they pass there test? do they expect them to insure it before they even have a driving licence? Dont think so like

i don't see whats complicated regarding the new law

A; insure your car, and drive it
B; insure your car even if you don't drive it
C; declare it sorn, and don't have to fork out for insurance

that is literally the only options you have.

Il tell you why its compicated. I dont have the money to insure it. And i dont have a drive/garage to put it while declared off road. If you lose your job and end up on £50 a week, what on earth you supposed to do if you have no off road option

once again the goverment fk over the poor.

well, unfortunately thats just your poor luck. - not taking the piss or anything.

but for the majority this law is beneficial (in theory)

but you have to remember. The law still requires 14 year olds to take long bow lessons. (in theory)

whilst that's a humourous thought..

it's pretty irrelivant, and i'm sure its not actually a law these days - the joys of having an uncodified constitution.

It is out of order as they could fine you in the time it takes between you declaring it off the road and the insurance running out. What the coppers doing on anyone's private land anyway?

Thats bollocks, it's impossible not to get raped by owning a car.

If a cars taxed it needs to be insured. Not hard really is it?

Its not hard to understand, but it has down sides to it.

If you have 2 cars (ie 1 new and one for sale), high insurance and no garage/driveway, what do you do?

You cant declare SORN on the one your selling because its on a public road, so it needs to be taxed, but you cant insure it cos its too expensive to insure both, so you get raped anyway :S

Not really any worse off though. As the lsaw stands at the moment, you could have a car on the road with tax and no insurance and without a check on the car or ANPR camera catching it nothing would happen. But If a ANPR camera drove past and saw it you would be in as much shit as you would be when the new law comes in to force. Basically going from rsiking an ANPR camera finding you have no insurance on a taxed car on the road, to being a definate fine etc just by using a database.

Its the same as before really, apart from we have to be more prompt with paperwork and also there will be alot more paperwork than before. DVLA are shit as it is, so with all the extra paper work from people declaring SORN rather than leaving them untaxed for a month etc they will probably collapse lol

This is true :p Panic over

Makes no odds to me, I have a place to put cars lol. I do understand some peoples worries though, allthough technicaly, if they are worrying about it, they are breaking the law to start with ;)

Yeah... the law is fucking crap for people who live in flats. I can't afford / justify renting a house and the block of flats I live in only has road parking... fucking ridiculous.

nope buxton raceway and i aint got a car big enough to tow it.

plus its costs me £26 to add it on my policy for 1 week. its gunna cost me £30 in fuel to get there towing it along with the running costs of a bigger car.

If you're keeping a car on a public road it should be insured anyway. Personally I'm less concerned about people trying to save a bit of cash than I am about the uninsured drivers running people over and fucking up their lives

Be interested to see where people who deal in cars and use a traders policy stand on this though! Unless you name the cars on the policy and it gets added to the database
