Right gentlemen and ladies, I've recently got a new job which is pretty well paying and I want to get a new car at some stage soon. My budget is around £12k.

The cars I've thought of and quite like are:
Astra VXR
Focus ST
Civic Type-R (EP3)
Golf GTi Mk5
Honda S2000

I like all of these but I don't know which I prefer. I've looked through parkers guides at the pro's and con's of all of them. If it was you which would you choose and why?

And are there any other cars that you could suggest. The only guidelines I have are:
Needs to be quick
Fairly new
Good tuneability
Maintanence costs not through the roof

Thanks guys

e46 m3

This.

Seriously though, these threads appear ALL the time. Might not be your intention but they are a bit ASW too.

Why don't you test drive each a load of cars and make your decision based on that?

been in them all apart from s2000 and rate an e46 m3 over them. I wouldnt spend 12k on a type r or golf gti and he said they needed to be quick

Surely the running costs of an M3 will be ridiculous though?

Its not my intention to be an ASW, I'm just asking for peoples opinions, and just to see if anyone had another other suggests.

Mk1 Focus RS is too old I think

You could get a supercharged DC5 for 12k no bother, and it would annhialate every car in that list, aswell as outhandling them all too

Carries the M tax, but depends on your milage and wether you'd have it dealer or Indy serviced..

shame its got a FWD chassis.

to the op

e46 M3. why wouldn't you want a quick, comfortable, iconic, RWD car?

can't get that with a honda / ford / vauxhall

Any ideas on standard servicing costs??

lee_saxo

insp 1 - £400 insp 2 - £550 oil service £160

I use Iridium Engineering, rated as one of the best in the business

Oil change is about £100-200
Inspection 1 £200ish
Inspection 2 £400??

Thats a rough guess at Indy prices but it's a relative.. And obviousy main dealer is more.

Parts can be quite steap but they're a 40k car at the end of the day. Their epic..

Is that on your evo? I knew prices have risen tax and all but fuck!

Should buy a e39 m5 they're cheaper to service than a m3..

lee_saxo

Actually agree with Peter with regards to the DC5 Integra.

If it were my money and running costs were not an issue then i would be buying an R32 GTR, oh hang on i did lol.

Forget M3's there slow!! lol

Just stick with the DC5.

M3 0-100mph 11.6seconds
R32 GTR 0-100mph 12.5seconds

Not much in it, but I wouldnt say the M3 was slow when owning the slower R32 lol

Mine wipes its arse with M3's, the GTR standard was always underpowered at 280 bhp, the standard internals have been known to cope with over 700 bhp despite what some people would have you believe, the GTR was and still is the king!

M3 standard internals good for 800bhp :p M3 is the king!

Or get an E36 Alpina and turbo it, this is 'BCTuning' off here, hes given up on the saxo and moved onto the BM, bit of a problem with turbo'in a right hand drive is the room, so just cut a hole out in the bonnet :y:

M3's are slow, what planet are you on bud? Yes your's may wipe the arse with M3's but i can't see how unless your running 500bhp+, considering there 0-60 4.7 or even less, so you must be hitting 0-60 in mid 3's to as you say wipe the arse with them. Your Gt-r is modded to achieve the arse wiping, mod an M3 and i don't think you'd stand a chance :)

With 12k I'd put a deposit on a house not some depreciating tin box.

0-100 is the better test of how quick a car is especially for these two.

The GTR is quicker to 60, but only marginally.

First of all its called "tongue in cheek" mate, secondly if you have so much experience with both cars then you would know your talking out your arsehole! ;)

Integra DC5.

Out of those mentioned a DC5 or M3 would probs hold their value best.

In terms of tunability.. S2000
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNwvxtPziu4#t=6m45s

Personally I'd go for an S2000 or R32.

havnt read the rest of the replies but a scoob :) get one thats been looked after and running cost won't be through the roof - mine costs me £300 petrol a month (this does about 1000 miles lol) and £200ish insurance and thats about it - tax is nothing compared to insurance and petrol and repairs should be minimal if its looked after! servicingwise a couple of hundred quid every 6 months - but well worth the money if you can afford it!!
