View Full Version : What phone have you got?

Another pole following on from one I made in April 2009. (*Clicky*) (http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=226444) This is just as the iPhones were becoming popular, and just before the smart phones bcame common in the other makes of phone etc.
I had a Nokia at the time, but theyre slacking with the smart phone front, so expecting them to be one of the least voted phones compared to being the most popular in 2009!
I now own a Galaxy S running Android, had it for around a year now.
What have you got?
I expect iPhone, Blackberry and Samsung to be the most popular now.
Also if this can stay gen chat like the old one for all the votes :)

Blackberry badman.
Although, tbh. I find it pointless.. it was good for a week. But I don't use the stuff it has on there, I pretty much just text and call people, take pictures of the car when needs be.. Thats it. I've only just started using Blackberry messenger after having a blackberry for over a year.

It's immense.

I agree, its because they won't move from Symbian.. Which is the worst OS ever.. Even worse than iOS.

I was gonna install a new ROM (Swedish Spring RLS5 I think) but gave up.. I think I was doing it right but the recovery manager said the image wasn't recognised and I didn't wanna risk it as I need my phone (maybe I'm learning after all the times I've broken shit doing stuff like this.. If it ain't broke don't fix it etc :P)... So I customised the fuck out of the standard ROM and just deleted all the shit orange apps, installed launcher EX, custom themes, beautiful widget, power amp, chompSMS, Sywpe etc.. Looks the nuts now.
Clearly this will make less than no sense to anyone else :p.
The only criticism I have of it is that it is ridiculously quiet.. The headphone volume that is :(. I like my music considerably louder than what it gives.. I think this must be the EU or something putting a in a restriction? Although an Ipod is at least twice as loud so.. I don't know, I've tried like three different volume boosters (or what they claim to be) but none of them really work imo.. Or not noticeably anyway..
Other than that, and that there are no bespoke cases (which isn't their fault.. lazy after market accessory bastards) Its perfect, both the phone and the homescreen(s) looks sexy as fuck.
For sub £100 it's unmatchable.
Can you tell me the advantages of having a custom ROM? I wasn't quite sure why I was doing it myself!

If you read the guides its so easy to upgrade and 2.2 Swedish Spring is MUCH MUCH faster seems like a whole diff phone after!
Also you can backup your phone with the clockwork mod flasher so you have an image to revert it back to exactly if it goes wrong! Restoring it takes 10 mins and installing a new rom takes five.
If you get some Sennheiser Ear Bud phones the sound is much much louder!

Hit the Recovery tab.
Hit the MENU button on your device and choose Update Database

If you have more than one IMG file on the sdcard you will be presented with a list - choose recovery-clockwork-3.0.2.8-blade-gen1.img

First experience into smart phone world, pretty impressed - does what it says on the tin. Cheeky xbox live (for a nerd like me lolz) and yeah, h'actually makes me read my emails. Good to keep in touch like.
Little nag I have is the fact you have to have one email (live ID) for it to synchronise all apps on the phone (standard ones like first email, Facebook and XBL GT), as mine aren't it's a ballache.

Its all a thing to look cool between your mates, probably taken over from cock size..... is what version of Iwank you have :S
The only thing that makes them bearable is apps (dude!) ... and they are written in objective c, a off spin of the C programming language.. the base of all things computers we know (Windows).
... Yet Apples' OS.. which is average at best... is based on something completely different.
Its like buying a diesel powered Ferrari. A load of tosh.

Saying about people just trying to be cool, or being fan boys etc. You twats are just as bad.
Anyone with a brain can see that both the iPhone, blackberry, android, and windows 7 phones have positives and negatives. But then I guess there is always going to be uneducated who think they know what's what.

This one one of the most retarded comparisons I have ever read.
If you knew anything about apple you would realise that the apple os is mainly written in objective-c too.
You would also realise that is a stupid comparison since windows computers use many different languages, java, python, etc.
Maybe you should educate yourself before sprouting out shit.

It is pretty queer crying over what phone is better.. However
Saying about people just trying to be cool, or being fan boys etc. You twats are just as bad.
That's the problem, I don't give two fucks fucks what phone anyone uses lol, my problem is when the braindead apple fanyboys try and argue the Iphone is the 'best' which although is subjective (sort of), is also plain wrong in many senses, phone in the world without any evidence.. Phone technology moves so quickly it is literally laughable to consider any phone as the best for longer than 6 months usually (when the newer model comes out).
Does your Iphone have;
A multicore processor?
Ability to use software other than Itunes to copy music to the device?
Custom ROMs?
1gb RAM?
Expandable storage?
Replaceable Battery?
Flash?
Any sense of custimiability to the depth and detail of the most basic stock android OS?
AMOLED?
Radio?
DivX/XviD video support
1080p Video Recording?
Java?
All the top end phones, HTC Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy S/Galaxy S II etc etc destroy the Iphone in terms of hardware, functionality, custimisation, features, speed etc etc. Also you don't have to pay Apple tax. Most Iphone users don't know how or why the Iphone is 'better' as they claim, or why they have one other than "their friends have one" or "its cool", feature for feature it can't match the phones I named.. And it shouldn't.. These phones are newest, faster, and more powerfull..

agree what you are saying tbh
however this is about the best phone not the phone with the most functions.
Despite the Iphone not necessarily having the most functions, the Iphone is the best phone for our current culture and has been for many years.

I'm not saying it is all bad, the OS for example is much better than Symbian (not an achievement though! :P), it works.. but in terms of hardware it is not the best, categorically. Like I say software is subjective (for me it's night and day) but a lot of users want simplicity, to be spoonfed by Apple, the navigation/OS does work well on a basic level if you don't want to change anything, very slick and pretty looking.. But again, that isn't functional.. A better analogy is like having a track look car that doesn't go on track.. It looks the part but can't back it up.
I have a sneaking suspicsion that the success of the iphone is not down to the phone as much as it is the marketing.

<SNIP>
It is subjective, then you went on to contradict yourself with "plain wrong in many senses". Having huge specs is like having a big BHP on a car. BHP by itself doesnt mean anything, as with a phone, having huge specs doesnt = user experience.
I snipped the rest as i have already said, both phones have positives and negatives. There is no point arguing with someone who can only see one side of it.
A lot of that stuff does not equal a better user experience. If anything android needs them better specs to make the OS run as smoothly as the iphones OS.
How ever, i will comment on a few things...
A multicore processor - I have a 3gs, which is slower then the iphone 4, and still works perfectly, with no lag. The iphone doesnt need these huge specs, the OS is designed for the hardware, unlike the fragmented android OS.
Ability to use software other than Itunes to copy music to the device? Why would you need to, itunes is good software...
Custom ROMs? Again, custom roms are usually used to speed up the OS, remove stuff that isnt neccesary to make the OS smoother, something that isnt needed on the iphone.
1gb RAM? See above.
Expandable storage? I agree, this would be useful.
Replaceable Battery? I only ever run out of battery, but i guess for those who use there phone alot maybe...
Flash? No, but then i dont think i would ever use it so wont comment on it.
Any sense of custimiability to the depth and detail of the most basic stock android OS? Yes, you can do a HUGE amount of customisation if you jail break. (Dont say "well thats not standard", because to achieve large customisation in Android you still need to root it.)
AMOLED - Never seen a amoled screen, i know the technology behind it but cant see it being much different to the screen on the iphone, especially with such a small screen.
Radio? People still listen to the radio?
DivX/XviD video support - I never watch video on my phone, why would you want to, look at the size of the screen.....
1080p Video Recording? - I have never, and will never buy a phone based on its video recording/picture taking ability. I have a DSLR, for that....
Java? Never needed it, as with flash, may be useful to some i dont know...

I'd say the simple and intuitive interface is THE key selling point for the iPhone. Why complicate something that doesn't need to be?

I have a HTC Desire HD, and I love it. I can understand while a lot of people have iphones and have always wanted one. The reason I didn't get one tho was because of the cost, you have to take out a £60 a month contract to get one free, where mine is only £30 a month and can do everything an iphone can do and more.

The iphone doesnt need these huge specs, the OS is designed for the hardware, unlike the fragmented android OS.
1gb RAM? See above.
That's a poor excuse for inferior hardware if I ever heard it "It doesn't need it".. So they aren't going to improve the Iphone specification with next generation?
1080p Video Recording? - I have never, and will never buy a phone based on its video recording/picture taking ability. I have a DSLR, for that....
Again, this is an incredible feature that you discredit? Why would you buy two pieces of expensive hardware when you can get the functionality in one? I'm not saying it's gonna be as good as a dedicated DSLR.. But come on..
Custom ROMs? Again, custom roms are usually used to speed up the OS, remove stuff that isnt neccesary to make the OS smoother..
Its used to add features and make it run more smoothly.. Are you saying that this isn't something you would want? Its user freedoom..
Having huge specs is like having a big BHP on a car. BHP by itself doesnt mean anything, as with a phone, having huge specs doesnt = user experience.
That's not a good analogy, a phone, especially an android phone is like a computer.. and bigger specs DOES mean better performance, you correctly point out if you don't use the hardware fully it is surplus to requirments.. But if you DO want to have the fastest hardware and run the most resource hungry programs then you do want it.. Having poor specs and saying "its optimised" is not an argument.
Why would you need to, itunes is good software...
:D - This says it all.
Lastly;
There is no point arguing with someone who can only see one side of it.
Not at all, if the Iphone was the 'best' phone I would say it is.. But its clearly not, very far from it. I don't give a fuck about brand loyalty, I want what is objectivley the best, not to be reassured that it is by crapple fanboys.

iPhone 3gs, best phone i've had tbh.
Blackberry Bold, had it over a year.
I went into the shop to buy an iPhone3gs, just as i was going to the counter i changed my mind and bought the Blackberry bold.
Never looked back, my mate has the iphone 3gs which i was going to buy, every time he pulls it out it looks like a kids toy, where as the blackberry looks much more 'profressional'. BBM is awesome too. (blahblah whatsapp, blahblah ye ye).

Iphone 4........had blackberrys for years but the last one was a complete twat.....in 3 months i had 6 handsets.
And now tbh.......i keep asking myself why the fuck did i bother with blackberry??
I use mine for texting, phone calls, emails, facebook, saxp, and my favourite is ebay. It sends me a notification if something i'm watching is about to end.
End of the day I see a mobile as a phone, not a toy. I'm not interested standing around playing games on it. The primary use should always be texting and phonecalls, but that doesn't mean i want to walk around with a nokia 3210.

Nope, but my insurance is with the bank and covers the handset only and not the software. If it's lost or stolen how would they prove it's jailbroken?

main reason i love mine if im honest.
im no phone geek so can't get involved with the debate lol.
and i've never actually used a HTC, so although i always big up my iPhone, i don't really have anything to compare it with.
however, the iphone is the most user friendly thing i've ever owned. maybe you'd want something more technical if you were properly into technology, but i'm not, and neither are the majority of iphone users i guess.
the apple service is also something worth crediting. My phone started playing up, i walked into apple and they swapped it for a brand new one there and then. can you do that with a blackberry? or a HTC?
the iphone does everything i need it to do whilst on the move. anything more i need, i have a laptop.

Aye, I agree with you Ashley, that's why it's sold, it does the basics well and reliably (not that android doesn't), it just grinds my gears when some people refuse to accept it's anything but 'the best', unequivocally without knowing the options or accepting any alternatives that might rival/equal/better the phone in a lot of cases.
User friendliness I think is the key. Intuitive, simplicity and reliability are its key strengths, Apple play a clever marketing game to appeal to such a broad audience of consumers.

I did it with my first blackberry, took it back in the first month as it wouldn't charge.. They replaced it there and then with another brand new one. Took about 5 minutes.

yeah, i do love mine to bits and think it's the 'best' phone on the market. but what i mean is it's the best ive used, and the best for my use. probs a few better things out there.
same way i use window's as it's the 'best' for what i do on a computer. although my cousin who does computer geeky stuff for a career uses linux or whatever it's called
reading through your posts a couple of pages back, yes their marketing is the main reason for apples success. granted, it's a cracking phone, but it'd be nothing without the marketing team. i think most people i know (including myself) genuinely beleive they 'need' an iphone. the same way, when the ipod first came out, everyone beleived it was the best MP3 unit on the market, although it wasn't as good / recieved worse reviews than other products at the time (iRiver, and sonys version for example)
business psycology ftw.
Yes :P

You walked into apple and they replaced your phone? Seems hard to beleive since every apple store I have ever been in doesn't even sell iPhones.

Yes :P

They never once straight swapped mine and I had 5 as they just kept going wrong. In the end I got fed up and paid for a (discounted) early upgrade as the BB was just that poor.
Can safely say I'll never have another Blackberry.
HTC's are pretty cool, but for user interface IMO iPhone is a winner.
