Im being a tight arse and brewing my own booze to take down for the saturday night before french car show. Just thought i'd show you how its done for a laugh or if you fancy having a go yourself :y:

Shopping list:

10 cartons of tesco value apple juice
1 bottle of tesco tropical juice
1 bottle of tesco summer fruits juice
2 jars of tesco value lemon curd
Tea bags
Sugar
Brewing yeast
Citric acid and yeast nutrient (not really needed, i already had some)

Step 1, Pour all apple juice into container:

http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/1411/img20110525145907.jpg

Step 2, bring some of your tropical juice up to boil then simmer:

http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/5902/img20110525150210.jpg

Step 3, add 1 jar of lemon curd and dissolve:

http://img199.imageshack.us/img199/1707/img20110525150632.jpg

Step 4, add liquid to container then repeat step 3 with your summer fruits juice and second jar of lemon curd. Add this to the container.

Step 5, put a brew on, strong, about 5 bags:

http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/4164/img20110525151116.jpg

Step 6, Allow tea to brew then add to the container. Now weigh up about 150 grams of sugar (any type will do) apart from brown sugar, dont be silly!

http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/7273/img20110525152602.jpg

Step 7, add sugar to the container and give it all a good mix! Your liquid should look like mine (a bit like sick).

http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/1608/img20110525152805.jpg

Step 8, Add the acid and nutrient if applicable stir and sprinkle your yeast on top. Wait about 10 minutes while your yeast wakes up then stir the lot once again. Put the lid on and wait just over a week with the odd stir, maybe two or three it doesnt really matter. Once the sediment has settled you can now siphon off your moonshine and get wasted! :panic:

I also took a gravity reading which means once it has finished fermenting i can take another reading to work out the alcohol percentage (should be around 8 percent).

Thats about it, i'll be bringing it to french car show if anyone wants a pint. Should have about 28 pints from this lot so there should be plenty left to go around!

Adios!

Interesting!

Just one thing, if you're putting the lid on will it not be sealed? Surely it has to breath? Or am i talking garbish?

Phreaktwo
26th May 2011, 21:59
It does yeah, but when you take the lid off to stir every few days it gets chance to breathe then ;)

Brewing is awesome.

Anaerobic respiration, so no need for oxygen.

Ah yes, tis the time for home brew. We are commencing our Elderflower champagne production tomorrow, walking around the countryside decimating every tree in sight.

28 pints! I need to try this!

How does it go from gloopy sludge to smooth cider though?

fermentation? dense material drops? like oil and water.. It wont be clear will it? more cloudy i would think?

Similar to a cask of ale.

Let it settle and breath, all the hops go to the bottom, the nice clear stuff comes through the beer line.

I'm going to look into making my own beer/cider after reading this thread, its something i should know how to do really.

only thing i brew is skittles vodka...

one bottle of smirnoff and 1 bag of skittles mix them together until skittles dissolve, skim off the fat and drink it neat and have the most drunk experience you have ever witnessed...

Sounds great what size bag of skittles do you use? normal size bag or one of the big bags?

Its best to only do one colour or two similar falvours (choose your favourite)

So a big bag is needed and then use all of that colour or similar flavours!!

think I did orange and yellow!!

The skittles ferment and make it even stronger to :y:

But you can drink it neat as it takes the edge off it slightly!!

thats about as close as I'd ever get to brewin...

I drunk a litre and a half of neat skittles vodka and 8 coronas at a party and I was seriously destroyed!!

EDIT Heres a skittles vodka progress thread which made me do mine http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=202896&highlight=skittles+vodka

You wont kill yourself unless you try drinking a ton of the stuff and end up with alcohol poisoning lol. If i do a full tub it ends up nearly 50 pints :y:

Also, once it's more or less finished brewing i'll just leave it to settle and it will come up clear (not sure what colour it'll be yet, might look like poo water... lol)

I should have some left on the sunday so anyone going to FCS come find my car and i'll do you a pint :drink:

Just tested the gravity before i start to clear and settle it for kegging later on this week and its currently made a gravity change to suggest its 6.6% already!

This is going to be rocket fuel :panic:

Dont need to filter it, I'm going to add 'finings' to the cider to help it clear and just by leaving it for 2 days or so all the crap falls to the bottom. Then all you need to do it syphon the cider off from above the sediment :y:

Bone question: whats 'finings'?

Do you add anything to stop the yeast acting or does the alcohol just kill it off anyway? Any particular brand/type of yeast better than the others? How much yeast do you have to put in?

done a few home brews myself. CampDavid once tried one Irn Bru bottle full of brew that my mate and I had made, and by the time that was done, we were quite well on.

This bloke (http://eckraus.com/wine-making-finings.html) can explain better than i can, but it basically helps to clear the mix and get rid of all the nasties. You can add a halting agent which i have done but normally you can just wait till it stops naturally.

Well you can use all sorts of types including cider yeast and champagne yeast but my local shop only sells wine yeast but it doesnt make much difference to me. Normally about a teaspoon per gallon of liquid does it, its all really quite easy once you get the basic knowledge down :y:

Nice one bor, i'll get a piccy up on here so you know where to go for a free pint lol. I did have plans to make the boot of my car into a fully functional pub but the lack of funds and time means its not ready for fcs :(

Heres the car i shall be in on sunday, disregard the fact that its dirty, not had chance to clean it yet. I should be hanging about at some point so i'll be dishing out some pints. Ive even worked out a way to dispense the cider from a keg using an air compressor lol.
