use audio carpet, can get it cheap off ebay. use MDF not sure how thick you would use. depends if you have a sub and 6x9s or what not.

i just got a piece of mdf 3 or 5 mm deep then cut it to the size of my parcel shelf

then glued and bolted it together

then if your having 6x9's cut your holes for them

then just cover with cloth/carpet

2 hour job at the most

Ok, because of the density of the wood I would not make one out of plywood if I were you. MDF is best and as weight is a concern in your car use what you need. so.......

If you are just putting in a couple of 6*9s you can get away with 6 or 9mm MDF, if you are going for 3 or 4 speakers (ie, 2 6*9s and a couple of 8 or 12 " subs) then use at least 12mm possibly 15mm.

As for measurements you shelf should be 108cms long and a maximum of 42cms wide at the edges with 48cms wide in the centre. You will then need to smooth off the edge directly under the rear windscreen. Put it in the car to fit and work out where you need to take a bit off for the centre brake light and also the 2 rubber stops that stick out.

Speaker holes are easy as you can normally draw around them and then cut a hole less than required to allow you to screw them into place.

Cover with any thin fabric that you can find, stretch it and then tac it around the underside. Done!

i just marked out where i wanted the speakers on the shelf, cut two 6x9 holes, bolt the speakers to them, covered in black acoustic cloth, job done, no idea why everyones saying to use mdf, ive had no problem cutting the standard shelf?

Because it looks poo and any any bass notes just end up shaking the shelf so your music sounds crap.
