So me and ze' birdy have decided to get a dog :)
We want something that likes exercise that can keep up with us on bikes & isn't a puss for late night walks :)
We have got it down between a;
Siberian Husky
http://australianhusky.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/Siberian-Husky-Puppy-51.jpg
&
Alsatian
http://s2.hubimg.com/u/1368593_f520.jpg
Both will be thoroughbred Pedigree chums bought through KC registered breeders to ensure the best doggy is bought (don't want it to be cross bred or by a weak bloodline) It would kill me if it got ill or developed an abnormality due to it's blood relatives. A thoroughbred will have less chance of this...
Anyway.
We have been researching both for quite some time now. We have always wanted a Husky but have found that they are super hard to train & are not retrievers, so playing a game of fetch would be a miracle *doesn't bother me I suppose* but not being very intelligent (that does) & highly destructive little Harry Houdini's. Oh and there's only one video on youtube of someone taking one off lead and it coming back (apparently they like to GTFO quick time lol)
Has anyone on here had any experience with ownership or anything with Husky's?. We REALLY want one but I want to know if it's not just all BS that I read, in other words not all have this personallity, luck of the draw kind of thing?
I'm thinking a Alsation won't be far off a Husky in that sense but it's intelligent & loyal and can be taken off lead without it performing some kind of dissapeaing act?
Any input will be greately appreciated.
Huskies have a short lifespan (average 5 years), too many inbreds. Some of them are well retarded. Alsatians are great dogs, very clever and loyal like you mentioned, just keep in mind they often develop hip problems towards 8-10 years.

Id get an Alaskan Malamute. I went for a walk with a huskymalamute x and met 2 other malamute owners, one of which had two mutes and both of them off the lead as any other dog. All about training them I guess.

Defo german Shepard
Always wanted one and finally got a white one about a year and a half ago
Loves walking whenever and so so loyal
Only thing is they're quite protective which is bad for us coz we live on the school run
Most people that walk past get barked at lol
If you live on a quite road I can't see it being a problem
I've got 2 German Shepards (no such thing as an Alsatian ;)) and we were considering Huskies, but everything you've listed about them is true, they're pack dogs primarily, they don't want to be indoors.
German Shepards are the most loyal dogs ever, and highly intelligent, it doesn't take long to train them as long as you're consistent with your approach to it

5 years, that I never read anywhere I've read 10-15 years :Z if that's the case I can't have one.
Im aware of the hip issues with Alsations but 8-10 is old anyway so it can grow old gracefully :)

Thanks for your input mate, It's a shame Huskies don't share the same charictoristics as a shep, you can get cross's but I won't be doing that lol

german shephard every time - i'd LOVE a husky but not until i have a bigger house and outdoor kennel.
Both of mine are pure breeds:

Any excuse...
The old girl is 9 now, nearly 10 and her back hips are shot, she has to take an arthritis/painkiller pill every day, which doesn't come cheap.
One thing to look out for is that they can become very fussy eaters, and that the vet bills associated with their dodgy hips don't come cheap at all.

had a few alsations for guard dogs for my dads business, very good dogs!!
I would definately have one of those mate, huskies are an awesome fanny magnet though if that comes into the equation??
Don't know enough about them otherwise to comment...
Have rottweilers now instead of alsations, full of energy, fast as fuck and love exercise from my experience!!
Get a rotty!! haha

My parents have had nothing but german shepards over the years all KC but the newest isnt and shes the healthiest theyve had..
Dont buy KC theyre spastics with webbed toes seriously.
Average age for a KC shepard now is upto 8 years :n: our last died saturday aged 12 and he was the oldest weve had :(
My old girl's KC and like I say she's knocking on 10, and tbh she's been healthy other than her hips.

i dont think theyre a great idea for something to run beside a bike
youre better off getting a border collie or similar
as said, they have hip problems and also very thick coats, the husky in particular isnt designed for our climate
Just seen the bit about running alongside bikes...
You don't want a German Shepard for that, or a Lab for that matter, you'll ruin their elbows and hips doing that for any real distance.

I'd agree with this I'm afraid, the more "well bread" a dog is, means basically the more it has been mated with mothers, brothers, fathers and daughters, meaning you get serious problems down the line. I'm totally against the KC as they are just making the problem worse and are not willing to change their rules to benefit dogs health, they just want them to have the most prominent features, meaning the dogs they rate, end up with breathing problems, joint problems, epilepsy (which my dog has suffered for 7 years now), and other nasty conditions.

Hmm so KC registered isn't the way to go for a healthy dog?
I have been told I can have the best of both worlds with a cross between both dogs,
Northern Inuite which offers husky looks and german shep brains, sounds like that could be a winning combo the girlfriend certainly likes the sound of that!

Heres an example. English Bull Terriers used to look more like this on the left, but have ended up more like the dog on the right. Similarly, inbreeding has led to Pugs and suchlike having breathing problems.
http://www.abc.net.au/reslib/200909/r432943_2075497.jpg
Certain KC dogs can be tested for genetic problems though, so you have a good chance of avoiding inherent problems.
ANY dog - if brought up and treated correctly - will be loyal, willing to come back, easy with other dogs.
Have you thought about getting a dog from the home? I got mine from the SSPCA - fully neutered, jagged, wormed, clean bill of health, £70.

Couldn't decide on a German Shepherd or Alaskan Malamute last year so decided to get a cross between the 2. Top quality cross breed, you won't regret it.

My sister has one of these, it's a lovely friendly dog but it slevers constantly, just leaves puddles of drool everywhere it goes, rank
She had 2 Jap akitas but one had to be put down as it turned crazy, would be sound as fuck then would randomly be stood there staring at you and showing its teeth, like in a psychotic way just glaring at you ready to kill you
When it got put down the other one then turned a bit funny and wasn't the same, then one day it went for a little girl who was probably tugging at its fur, didn't hurt her but my sister gave it away to someone
I have springer spaniels they are amazing dogs, and a little patterdale terrier which is a little weapon

No, it's one of the rare times it generally is the dog.
He was brought up well and looked after same as all of his other dogs, then just mauled him when he wouldn't throw the ball

German shepherd!!
Iv had 2 - one was KC, and he wasn't my dog, I was his human. He wouldn't even let my mum near me sometimes he was so bloody protective!! He lived till he was 16!!!!
2nd one wasn't KC - was playing in the park one day when a police officer approached and asked if we'd consider donating him to the force.
He's now a working dog!!
Amazing breed- so loyal!
As for cross breeds - I now have a Great Dane x Lab puppy - stunning dog so so beautiful - with great Dane looks, loyalty, and brains, and lab energy and really really loving.
She's just amazing!! Cross breeds ftw!

I would love a Japanese Nikita/husky they are gorgeous looking dogs however, there are people near me who walk theirs in the woods and they are very vicious even when unprovoked, one even once attacked my dog, mine was on his lead and the husky ran from other side of field and randomly attacked mine....gorgeous dogs...awful personality.
I say Alsation, vary loyal and loving dogs and great to train.

I have had my white one for 2 years now and he is such a big softy, he will hide under the table or in his bed if the grill is on, he will whinge if I leave the house without saying bye lol and he is always up for walking/running absolutely full of energy! My little one is only just turning one (she is bigger now but not by much) she would run for england she enjoys running more than the other.

Siberian Husky definitely! SO CUTE!
My Springer Spaniels are naughty but its cute. One was so much easier to train than the other but I suppose its just the pick of your dog.
You may get a Husky and it'll be super easy to train.
At the end of the day get the dog you both most love!
Don't watch Eight Below though if you do!
