Thought I'd start a new project diary for the new car...

Sooo..... I had a beautiful Mk2 Golf and it gave me plenty of scene points with the VW boys and made panties literally fall off many a female.

However it was a 1.3 and I soon got the itch for something more fun.

So on Saturday it went to it's new home looking at it's best:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/Golfhometime.jpg

I've always hated Mx5's and gave my mom huge amounts of grief when she was looking at one. So much so that she retracted her offer and bought something else.

Then i drove one!

They are absolutely incredible drivers cars and when I took my mate's out in the snow this year, I was convinced I had to have one.

In typical Tom holdaway style I found the cheapest / roughest car on pistonheads, viewed it, and bought it the same day. It's a 1.6 (115 bhp) eunos roadster import. Was brought over from Japan in 97. Paid £500 which isn't bad.

Here he is in all his beauty:

The paint (what's left of it) is rough, the interior smells like dead cats, the boot is out of line oh and the roof is compeltely knackered. On the plus side it's got MOT and mechanically it's perfect.

Plans:
• Clean car thoroughly, wet-vac seats and fragrance
• Service engine – Oil, coolant, plugs and belts
• Fix heatshield rattle
• Replace roof
• Sort boot problem and replace lock
• Lube up window channels to ease movement
• Respray wiper arms and replace wipers
• Find stereo replacement and speaker upgrade
• Replace Gear gaitor with leather replacement.
• Spray current wheels dark bronze colour/ satin black
• Get Import Reg plates
• Eunos rear panel + Reg plate
• Decat
• Get mx5parts.co.uk exhaust system
• Replace rear tyres on Enkei’s
• Get sills welded
• Coilovers
• Garage Vary front splitter
• Get steering wheel
• Air filter
• Change Discs and pads
• Stickers!!
• Cup holders
• Buy boss kit for wheel
• Pool Ball gear knob - Mazda M10x1.25
• Stainless bolts in engine bay
• Rota Grid V's in Bronze 15x8 ET0
• Respray

Fire away with the :homme: emoticons and gay abuse!

The smell is evil believe me, eye watering in places. First job when i'm home after picking it up is an interior strip down and clean then start prepping the body work.

It'll be pretty one day I promise :)

Yup no need for a welded diff, it's my daily drifter and it's fitted with an LSD anyway. Wouldn't be able to park it around here with a welder.

I'm currently reading a thread called "Teenage Dirtbag" on the mx5 nutz forum. If anyone wants an amazing story and a cool car to read about do a search.

Insurance is quite a sting yeah, but its worth it.
Ive been polishing odd bits and tidying up the interior but mainly driving it all day lol.

Strip it and put buckets in!!!!

Nah it goes well enough to keep a smile on my face as it is.

I really should update this...

First job was to sort the interior and the smell so I removed the seats and found this:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/IMAG0330.jpg

Gave the carpets and seats a snow foam and wet vac'd them dryish. The water was thick and black but it did the job:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/IMAG0331.jpg

I got bored of the crappy wheels so rubbed two of them down and sprayed them. The colour is a dark bronze and looks better in person:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/IMAG0333-1.jpg

I then went on holiday and took a photograph of a cat:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/IMAG0338.jpg

Came back yesterday and decided to tackle the stereo, it was shite and I only had one working speaker:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/IMAG0341.jpg

I've kept the old stereo and cd player as I can't be arsed shopping around for a new one yet - welding takes priority at the moment.

That's where I'm at now, the roof, welding and odd jobs like the boot lid are next on the list. Updates will come when they're done.

Ha, thought I recognised the username on Nutz.

Needs some love, so i'll be watching this.

Oh, and with it being a 1.6, it'll only have a viscous LSD at best, and even from new, they had piss poor locking abililties, and by now, most are dead (sealed unit so can't be refurbed either), sorry to break it to ya. :(

PS, shouldn't let the smell worry you, should have the bloody roof down!

holdawayt
21st July 2011, 11:50
Yeah after driving it, it's pretty obvious it's an open diff. Not to worry it's still good fun in the wet lol.

Smell seems to have calmed down a bit since the interior wash. Air freshners don't do a lot considering it has no roof / it's not air tight lol. The smell just goes straight out.

Once the roof's sorted I'll start on the welding and paintwork which should be more interesting.

No it's not, the bodywork is immaculate and the roof is perfect. It has no issues what so ever and the leather interior is superb.

But seriously I've never said it's nice have I? It's a complete dog and I paid £500 for it. It's sole purpose is to teach me to weld and prepare bodywork. I was looking for something like this for about a year and didn't find anything nicer for the same money. And yet it still puts a smile on my face even in this condition.

It's not my style to buy nice cars, ask anybody that knows me. People would think I've had a bang on the head if I pulled up in a minter!

Ps leather sucks donkey dick - too hot in the summer and makes your balls shrivel up in winter. I can't stand the stuff.

Apologies to the above poster, I was on my period at the time and felt strongly about the subject.

Time for a small (free) update.

Money is being a dick again meaning that I can't crack on with the roof just yet, so I decided to tidy the engine bay up.

Nope not that bad. This ones been messed with so its running roughly 120bhp and weighs 1060kg so very similar to a vts/gti. However it feels much faster with no roof and the exhaust noise.

titchster
26th July 2011, 15:40
1060kg is about 100kg more than a VTS. ;) But book figures say MX5s are somewhere between 960 and 1060, and the 1.8s are meant to be heavier, and to be at the top of the scale, it's gonna need A/C, PAS, electric windows etc. So with yours being a 1.6, with PAS, electric windows and air con, i'd say it's probably a little less than 1060kg.

My opinion (going by my 1.8, PAS, E/W, no A/C) is that they're slower than a VTS, but faster than a VTR. Definately closer to VTS than VTR though.

holdawayt
26th July 2011, 16:08
Sounds about right dude! Although my air con has been removed. Uneccesary weight and it wasn't working properly anyway. Amazing how much the pump weighs!!

In other news, Bobbington airport has been a valuable resource for me. Just opposite their helipads there's a massive open gravel section and I have permission to mess around on there. Set up a pile of wood in a vague circle and practiced getting the tail out and correcting it, learning how to clutch kick etc.

Sounds like chavvy doughnuts but It's purely to learn how to control the car in the case of an accident as I'm not used to rear wheel drive. It's also bloody fun! Found it's sometimes easier to control than a fwd car eventually after lots of practice.

I'll get a mate to take some pics soon.

Roof is getting worse, I'm having to reverse up to walls etc when parking to hide the fact there's a huge opening into the car. (nothing worth stealing in there anyway but that's not the point). So that's still top on my priorities.

Tom

Ditch the softop and buy a hardtop. :y:

holdawayt
26th July 2011, 16:24
Mate if I had the money it would already be done. But when taken into account that a soft top is £80ish second hand on nutz and a hard top is almost £200 for a bargain - I can't treat myself just yet. I need to get the basics sorted before I treat it to nice things. (water tight, exhaust system and shock absorbers are going)

So basically roof, mx5 parts single exit exhaust and some rokkor coilies lol

titchster
26th July 2011, 16:35
Yeah, I had a hardtop, in red. But let it go for £200 because I never used it (roof always down), and I could never be arsed to spray it. But, if anything happens to my soft top, i'll definately be going hardtop with no soft top. Provided I can actually afford to buy another hardtop...

Looks like it's come up well dude, any improvement at all on the bonnet?

holdawayt
2nd August 2011, 15:59
Indeed! Didn't know it was him until my film geek friend trivia'd me up lol

The polished bits came up well because there's still laquer there to polish (just about) the paint on the bonnet is just a matte undercoat before laquer so it gets slightly brighter but no where near shiny. Tempted to give it a quick blow over with Porche Gaurds red for the time being until I can get it properly sorted as we still have litres of the stuff left over from the Dellow.

Resisting the temptation to go matte black as I don't want the label of typical driftchav!!

titchster
2nd August 2011, 16:17
Could you not wet sand it back a bit, and give it a quick rattlecan over with some laquer? Should look better either way.

Don't do matte black. :(

holdawayt
2nd August 2011, 16:20
It's worth a shot yeah, will have a go this weekend. Got about 5 cans of that bloody laquer in my garage so I might as well use it.

Don't worry I wont, was just an easy option

holdawayt
5th August 2011, 15:54
Ok so I got bored last night and decided to experiment a bit with this bonnet.

As you may remember it started off like this:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzAzNjguanBn.jpg

After a lot of sanding, cleaning, laquer, sanding and polish it came out like this:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzAzNzQuanBn.jpg
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzAzNzcuanBn.jpg

It's far from perfect and I need to do the passenger side still but it's a huge improvement!

The welding was also done yesterday but I need to get pics of that still... but here's a before (was like this both sides):
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzAzNzguanBn.jpg

That's all from today's installment of Bicurious JDM goodness!

holdawayt
8th August 2011, 08:42
So carrying on from the last post....

My sills were corroded and I wasn't going to risk an M.O.T failure over something so easy to fix.

So this is the welded patch with some red oxide paint to prevent rust:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzAzODEuanBn.jpg

I then whacked some metal filler on:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzAzODIuanBn.jpg

Sanded down:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzAzODMuanBn.jpg

And painted (the black part has been added in now, forgot to get a pic of that):
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzAzODQuanBn.jpg

Total cost was £35 including paints and sand paper. A job that normally costs £200 a side. My filler work leaves a lot to be desired but it was my second crack at something like this and its not an area that catches the eye normally anyway.

These just came in the post today (Import plates):
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzAzODUuanBn.jpg

In other news, I left my roof down yesterday and we had a terrential downpour. I came back to find 4" puddles in either seat and the floor completely sodden. Wet vac and a warm day should see to that but for now I'm sitting on bin bags.

Last weekend was spent fixing the bottom pulley wobble.

So we changed the Lower crank pulley + woodrough key, cam belt, tensioners, aux belt, head gasket, rocker cover gasket and exhaust mani gasket while we were there.

No more wobble and it feels more responsive - probably because I know I can boot it without killing it.

Did manage to get some Arty pics before my brake seized up though:

Then a bit of this:

Lead to this:

And i finally washed the car and took a gay pic!

Can't tell you how nice it is to have a water tight roof. It's nice and snug now and actually gets warm when the heaters are on lol.

15th September 2011, 15:15
On the motorway, roof down, with rain. Keep at a decent speed, and it goes straight over you. Until it works its way up and over the side windows. That's annoying.

Mine's down most of the time, unless it's raining. Or i'm not going very far.

holdawayt
15th September 2011, 15:24
I was wondering if that would happen. From my desk at work I can just about make out a glimmer of sun so I'll pop the roof down on the way home.

Ok then,

On friday this arrived on my desk at work..
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzA0NDItMS5qcGc.jpg

Which meant that I could finally fit this:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzA0NTktMS5qcGc.jpg

In the meantime we picked up this little horror:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzA0NTQtMS5qcGc.jpg

She's been keeping me awake so I wasn't really feeling my best on Sunday morning.

Coilovers arrived on Friday too, I decided to start fitting these on Sunday morning. I wasn't finished until 10pm that night. What an absolute nightmare I had!!

Rusted / Rounded bolts, captive nuts that decided to stop being captive, double wishbone suspension preventing me from removing the old shocks from the car and 21 years of oil and kack.

Completely worth it though, I swore, I got angry, I got as many friends round as possible to help and here's the finished product:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzA0NTctMS5qcGc-1.jpg
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzA0NTgtMS5qcGc.jpg

Not stupid low, copious amounts of tuck, but enough to make a noticable difference to handling and speedbumps aren't an issue.

Thanks for looking, I'll get some better pictures once the coilovers have settled and I can get some decent lighting, wheels and bodywork next!

I was being an ASW and hoped the title would draw in a crowd making me an E-celeb. Alas i was wrong :p

Titch is yours a harsh ride? I've been in some stiff cars but seriously I'd be more comfortable with 4 steel rods for suspension. Got thrown out of my seat lastnight going over a man hole cover!! All part of the fun but I'm thanking God I've got a good back.

titchster
10th October 2011, 14:57
I wouldn't say it's harsh, it's obviously no luxury car (especially sans carpets etc), but it's livable, i've been in worse. Bit harsh over potholes etc, but on a half decent road, it's not bad at all. Don't forget i've obviously spunked a lot more on my suspension than you did though, so if the TA Technix were as good, then i'd be a bit pissed, haha.

10th October 2011, 15:00

Cheers ears,

On Tuesday I took the day off work to get the suspenion set up properly and some odd jobs.

Ended up replacing every nut and bolt from the doors forward for stainless steel ones. The stock ones rust badly and snap easily. I counted 58 bolts and I had to tap a thread into every one of them. (Cap head bolts I was using had thread 3/4 up the bolt and I needed a full thread). Took a while but worth the effort. Pics when I can be arsed.

Driving a FWD or 4WD is a lot easier than a front engined RWD in snow. Slightest incline, and unless you're carrying enough speed, you ain't making it up. I'm gonna try sticking some weight over the back end this year, but it's an absolute PITA.

The lowest insurance group is 11 I guess and the highest is 13. Depends is it imported and on the engine.
UK car 1.6 16v 90bhp 11-12group insurance, imported 1.6l 116bhp 12A-E group.
1.8i ~130bhp 12A-E groups and 1.8iS ~145bhp is 13 thought.

The imports will have lots of goodies like electric windows, pas, air con etc. They also tend to be less rusty due to the lack of salt in Japan. But it all depends how its been looked after.

Just avoid the Uk 1.6 90bhp, its slow as hell.

Had the estate as I can get engine bits in and out easily and it's uber practical!

Ahh I see, I say go for matt. Its a piece of piss to get matt paint looking good ;)
I did my old engine bay matt brown with a small compressor and came out really quite good! And did my brothers wheels matt black for that matter..also came out well!!

That would make sense! Bet you feel big pimping in the c5 :geek:

Oh! I have 3 months till my years no claims, been driving for 2 but only ran no claims on my policy from 19+ so had to wait ages! Gonna pay whatever stupid amount it's gonna be untill march and hopefully will go down!
Yours looks like a keeper. Hope you have fun with the project! I'll keep watching

I was getting ridiculous quotes at 19 dude, just use this time to learn the market and save up for a decent one!

To be honest, I didn't buy this car to keep much longer than a year. I'll get the paint sorted and have some fun in the summer then get another Mk2 Golf. It's a brilliant thing to drive though.

Looks rather yummaaayy!!! How come it is so fat? is it to resemble a sports cat so it looks more legal..ish?

titchster

It's silenced. Doesn't sound a great deal louder than running a full cat tbh.

holdawayt

Ive heard mixed reviews, some say the noise is unbareable others say you cant notice the difference. We'll see!

holdawayt
8th December 2011, 22:35
Simon, its perfectly legal to run these without a cat. Import plus its age makes the emissions test a doddle!

titchster
8th December 2011, 22:44
Mine with a silenced decat was barely any louder than with the cat. Then with the Fujitsubo exhaust, it's still not a great deal louder, just a bit deeper, lol.

I think those that say it's unbearable are on about unsilenced ones tbh.

Sorry for the boring update, still waiting for my exhaust (6 weeks late so far!!), my wing mirrors and boot lock.

However I did a bit of research and it turns out the key I've been using is actually a Valet key. This can open doors and start the engine but the boot, glovebox and sunglasses holder can't be opened with it.

This explains why my boot wouldn't open (I just binned the old lock  so I've had to order a replacement lock and key.

I then stumbled accross this in my history folder:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzA1NTMtMS5qcGc.jpg

It's made by a Japanese company and they normally supply funky little keys for jap cars. Turns out this is a replica of my master key and it would've opened the boot lock if I hadn't thrown it away!

Next update I promise will be more exciting with a nice stainless exhaust system and a video for the noise.

Time for an update.

Yesterday I took delivery of the new exhaust system. All I can say is Wow! The quality of the welds, the highly polished stainless steel and the noise is makes is incredible.

I still need to get a video of the noise so bare with me on that one, but here's a pic of how it came:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/utf-8BSU1BRzA1NTQtMS5qcGc.jpg

Fitting wasn't too bad, although I managed to get 3 sparks from the grinder in my eye. They burnt and scratched my Cornea so that was a little irritating.

Will get some pics of it fitted, seems a shame to have something so nice hidden away under the car!

Much was the exhaust? And it is just a generic one off ebay?

holdawayt
10th January 2012, 12:28
Mx5 Parts stainless steel single exit exhaust - £213.00 and the decat was £50ish.

Don't think there will be many in stock for long though.

I've got my eye on a 4-2-1 stainless manifold and downpipe for £100 on ebay too.

made much diff?

holdawayt
10th January 2012, 13:25
To the noise, absolute transformation.

Power wise - I don't know, I assume it's made a slight difference as the old exhaust had no backbox, cat was destroyed and had more holes than bin laden's chest. If anything it feels a bit more rev happy now.

Bit of a good day today.

The door bell rang and 4 large boxes were waiting for me.

Inside I found these:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/wheels.jpg

Gave them a little test fit:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/Newwheels.jpg

As you can see there's a bit of poke but nothing a bit of arch rolling won't fix. The only issue I've discovered is a little bubble of rust one one of the rear arches. Luckily it's only affecting the lip (Which'll be tucked out of the way) so it shouldn't cause too many headaches.

Tyres will be on the way at the end of this month and I'll get some proper pics of the wheel faces tomorrow.

I've only just recently started taking notice that these cars look the tits once some simple mods are carried out on them!
And it's this one that is inspiring me to get a mk1 mx5!
The mods you have chosen are the right choice and the wheels will look bang on on the car!
I just want to ask if you no the uk version of these are just as good as the imports?
I'm getting insurance quotes of 4k+ on a import mx5, but on the uk 1.6 mx5's I can get insured for 2.5k ( im 19, 3 points and 1 yr ncb) I'm swaying towards the uk models tbh...
Anyway keep up the good work mate it will look sweet as once you finished!

holdawayt
31st January 2012, 08:58
Cheers for the comments lads, cheered me up on a freezing morning!!

Billy - The UK 1.6 will be the 90bhp version, although they feel more like 50 lol. They really are very sluggish and unfortunately it's not as simple as removing a restrictor, it's different cams, head etc :/

There's also less kit, so you might not get PAS, EW etc which isn't overly important in a car like these but it's still nice to have.

Give Sky insurance a ring, I was getting similar quotes before I tried them. It's just over a grand for me now.

billytalbott
31st January 2012, 13:54
Ahh right that helped out a lot, so you have an import 1.8 mk1 mx5, I am hoping to get a mx5 towards the end of the year, gives me time to save up for one and the insurance for it :) cheers mate, keep up the good work!

holdawayt
31st January 2012, 14:00
Mine's the very early 1.6 import (before they restricted them). So it's about 115bhp, it'll be faster than a Vtr but not quite as fast as a vts (if you've ever been in one?). But it'll feel 10 x faster with the roof off. You really do get a shock when you look at the speedo and realise you're only doing 40 haha!
