Allsorts of ideas have flooded through my head about a new car lately, 16v this, vtr that, and then the other day my Dad suggested an old Audi A4, the one car I'd never thought of haha, although had been a fan of them for sometime.

Now it would be the Avant (Estate) version, not a fan of the saloons. Bit of a dilemma, 1.8T or 1.9TDI? Was just looking to see any anyone had driven either of these and tell me what they think

Mileagewise, I drive to Uni and back everyday, which is about a 7 mile roundtrip, and the rest of the time is just generally mooching around town, not much motorway driving at all. Got a few trips planned for next year, and just want something with a bit more comfort and refinement, but not too slow either as I'm planning to go to the Ring in it.

Mate of mine has the 1.9TDI and loves it, says its a good drive and comfortable for long distance, and takes all his surf gear etc

do they not do the 2.0tdi 170bhp ?

if you want diesal, thats an incredible engine.
if you can fork out more, the 2.7 Tdi with DSG box - is one of the best systems ive used. i love it, i will go DSG next. 2.7Ltr 190bhp and 300 Ft Lb of torques...yes please!

if you want petrol, the 1.8 20VT - as good as it is (so everyone says) are they really, that good in a car that size.
yes you have boost, but it will run out of puff quicker than an asthmatic walrus. think of the size, and weight that a 1.8 will have to pull around.
if you want petrol and boost, 2.0 tfsi engine, 200bhp. they may even have the 240 and 260 bhp versions too.

but imo, in a big car, you want diesal purly from the torque they deliver.

AFAIK, the 2.0 TDI 170 was in the later shape A6, could be wrong mind.

That's my thoughts, a standard 20VT isn't going to pull the skin off a rice pudding towing that much weight around, so I'd have to throw some megabucks around to tune it. A 1.9TDI, with a remap should be sufficient fun for my needs haha.

Insurance for me's the main reason behind either of these two, can get insured on the 1.8 or 1.9 reasonably cheaply, but I think a 2.0 TFSI's out the question, due to me only being 20 haha.

i have a 2.0 Tfsi - and im only just 21, with 0ncb. and, im paying £1185 Fully comp lol. so its not the cheapest out there lol.

a 1.9 even with a rempap your looking 140bhp and 300NM of torque.(which iirc the 1.9 is only 105bhp standard) which, the 2.0tdi engine, will give you as standard, and im sure it will come with that engine...and i doubt insurance would be hugely difference.

as for driving - they are smooth, and soo comfortable. even if it is under powered and doesnt give you that kick you are looking for, does that oomph matter as much when you have a nice drive?

i have a Leon - as i said its the 2.0 tfsi 200bhp and its got a tidy amount of poke to it, nothing serious, but tidy.
the drive on the other hand, i have give it a boot and have plenty of fun :A: or just ease around town, motorway, and enjoy it. its an all round, enjoyable car.
end of the day, its the same car.

would you not feel like a family man in his 40's, driving around in a diesel estate?

It's a fair point I suppose, and one I shall take into consideration, won't be until the end of the year at least anyway, plenty of time to look around.

Not at all, sick of driving or being driven about in little french hatchbacks which have worse rides than a washing machine drum.

Besides, German barges look pretty cool when tastefully modified, nice drop, some subtle wheels and a bit of ICE will keep me happy, while being economical and nippy.

estates are ftw!
diesal is not... BUT, the right diesal engine will own the majority of vehicles on todays roads.

now a petrol estate is win!

THIS

putting a 1.8 in an estate is like taking a toothpick into a gun fight.

im looking at one of these as my "family wagon" can make them look mint! and confy and roomy etc

as said, the diesel with a nice front mount and remap is what you want, the 1.8t is flat and uneconomical in the golf/a3 never mind these

I agree with tonto, my a3 is standard for now, and it pulls hard, but mate just had his 2.0TDI 170 s line remapped, now that pulls hard, very hard in fact

For 245 quid he got an extra 35 bhp and 40 torues or so, but with my pd140, i should expect 45/50 bhp extra, and around 75 torques :) all for 275 pounds:)

But i personally would go for the b7 chassis at least!

If your thinking of getting a Family Wagon, i'd be tempted by an 850R or Legnum vr4

Audi's are boring and way over hyped/overpriced.

Not really much difference bar the front end and a few different options/engines

Ive got a B6 a4 1.8T quattro avant, its an sline 190 remapped to 230 ish. its faster than a standard vts. The 190bhp engine was only found in the later b6's and its got abit more go than the lower spec 1.8T's

It goes well, stops well and corners well. Dead cheap/easy to fix so far, although ive done all the work myself and have vagcom

Mine looks like this minus the drop + tints

I have drove a few T5s and whist the old ones were a bit of rwd fun the new ones bore me to tears, the dash is miserable too.

I love the vr4s but seeing how standard galants fair with wear and tear ide hate to own one.

This ones the same as mine.
