View Full Version : Engine revving on its own!

Sometimes when I'm driving along the engine will start increasing in revs without me touching anything. Usually goes up to about 2,000 rpm sits there for a few seconds then drops. Also shes quite sluggish when I first start her up.
Any advice would be awesome! =]

mine does same, so far replaced icv & map sensor, ordered a temp sensor as it seems to get worse when the engines hot and the fan comes on for me so hopeing that works, if its not that then I don't really have a clue!

Yeah I feel the same, especially when your sat next to someone at the traffic lights. Probably thinking I'm a chav in a Saxo wanting to race them... quite embarrassing. I thought it was my accelerator pedal getting stuck at first.

I have had this problem, mine was crank sensor, It won't be temp sensor, If the temp sensor is still reading but is slightly out will not cause the revs to do this all it would do is over fuel the car very slightly, The problem is either of these 3 things :
Fan switch
Coil pack
Crank sensor.
As strange as it seems its been known to be the Fan switch maybe not kicking in soon enough that's why when it gets to a certain temp its acting up.
Its 100% one of those things, I have crank sensor and a coil pack here for a vtr mk2 pm me if either of you 3 is in need of either.

Thanks ChAds, are those things easy enough to replace on your own?

I had this happen immediately after fitting a coil pack but has not happend since... that is probably no help to you? Could this be anything to do with something called a Stepper Motor?

My car was revving itself & hasn't done since changing the coolant temp sensor. Mines has a green plug on it, the parts guy at the main dealer kept telling me its the blue one but thats the temp gauge sender.

Hi mate, replied to your pm, that would either be crank sensor or coil pack mate, I have both could bring them with me.

Has anyone figured this out yet? Mines getting worse and have gotten to the point of throwing it in the garage. But if it's a cheap, quick fix then I'll do it myself.

Clean out the throttle body would be a good idea as the butterfly in the inlet could be sticking open, then spray a bit of carb cleaner whilst its running directly into the throttle body.
Also may be worth putting a bit of 3 in 1 oil down the throttle cable as it may not be moving freely in the outer casing thus not closing the butterfly...
