Probably a dumb question, but as they have no advertisments, how do they make money to fund all their radio stations, TV stations, pay the presenters, pay for the assets, pay for the fuel for top gear.
I kno there TV licenses but still..

Just googled and found this Quick:
"We no longer get the original Doctor Who series in Canada because the renewal license was too expensive and the DVD's are also pricey."
Didnt realise they made that much money from overseas!

BBC is a non profit organisation using the license payers fees, funding and sales of their shows to fund themselves, they don't have to make a profit though.

We should have the option to 'opt out' of BBC now... :(

TV licence is mad expensive & you're even supposed to have one if you simply own a laptop, which I personally think is bullshit.

No you don't. You only need a licence to watch Live TV including live BBC iPlayer streams but not shows that have already been broadcast.
Or you just watch TV anyway without a licence, TV Licencing people have no authority to enter your house and actually check so you just don't answer the door lol.

why should you not pay pay ehn most probably people with even less money than you struggle to pay?
if it was'nt for them then there would be no bbc for you to watch!

i think if you didnt pay then technically watching bbc channels would kind of be stealing, however there should be a option to block the bbc channels and just recieve everything else as channels like itv are nothing to do with the licence so are free to view without the licence

i think in essence this would be great idea, such as the sky model, only problem is bbc.co.uk (iplayer etc), radio services and the digital switchover is covered with the licence fee, also itv, channel 4 and five do recieve a % off the fee as they provide free services

That's not true from what I've heard while at Uni, but then again they were probably just trying to skank money out of everyone!

That wouldn't make much of a difference as you can often watch f1/sport live so I guess you would need a licence thinking about it?

like i said if you are recieving a live broadcast via tv or internet you need a licence if you are watching it 5 min after it was originaly broadcast you can tell them to f off
most of the stuff they say is scaremongering and they are just trying to sell you the licence

I never said I dont pay for a licence, I said you can get away without paying it. Im going to uni in September and everyone suggests not paying for a TV Licence. They really try and rip students off, they want £650 a year in TV Licences for the place im staying with mates. Luckily we have got it included in our rent.

Its if you watch live, so you can go on the iPlayer website and watch TV live or you can wait for it to be uploaded to watch afterwards which you can do without a licence.

Basically registration of your addy/postcode.
Then if they suspect you to have a TV they will come and search the area.

No where near enough to run the BBC actually, in fact, not a big proportion of the BBC would be funded by TV licensing.
the BBC makes money in various ways:
- selling programs abroad
- selling programs to other channels (Dave etc)

Tv license is worth it for the quality of the F1 coverage alone now! :y:

Also, anyone that goes to uni and pays a TV license is an idiot.

They used to park up outside in a special van that could detect if you're pulling in tv signals or something, not sure if they still do that.

I simply watched tv on my laptop whilst in halls at uni, and as long as it was running off the battery it was legal, which of course it was ;)
They send out the same letter to everyone in halls trying to get them to pay. I don't understand how they'll find out if you're watching it live off a laptop. Someone in my halls had a TV and no licence and bugger all happened to them
And BBC Worldwide makes the BBC a lot of money. They sell DVDs, programmes overseas etc
