Right Ive been saying for so long i wanted to build a epic little saxo, and today i started it. Cut it short i want the car to have around 230bhp + and be used as a fast road track focused car.
The Spec.
Engine.
Ran 126.6bhp with just a 421 manifold (raceland)
Piper Full system with piper decat
Group N engine mounts (all of them)
Green Panel filter
Suspension
Lowered 40mm
Spax Psx on the front, being changed asap
B8's on the rears
Pro race 1.2 to be in satin black
Interior
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :y:
And all of this is happening due to this bad boy, my new daily..
http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm76/saxoll/DSC00248.jpg
Great comfy car 2.0 16v, so slow compared to the VTS but still, nice car for FREE!!!
Now the the project begun today.
General photos.

http://i293.photobucket.com/albums/mm76/saxoll/IMG_1204.jpg
Then today.. After many hours with still many more to even get it anywhere near and mucho money to be spent on her to get it to my standards. I was going to get a M3 however moving out next year so my M3 fund is now my house fund. So the project begins..

I've never, ever, ever, ever, ever known anyone to change their mind so much about a car haha! I'm sure you've had about 3 different for sale threads, 4 different progress threads and about 5 different what car threads this year alone! :p Please actually do what you've said in post one and turn it into an absolute beast rather than make another thread next week saying your breaking it again! :homme:
What management are you gunna be using cos Andy is close with getting the 3 plug running now isn't he? Ideal that he's right near us like :y:

7th August 2011, 19:23
Right picture time, the car is getting sprayed end of august once my full SD cage has been welded in (oppps bank balance hates me) So a friend of mine is going to spray it will a compressor and get it looking bang on, but im doing all the prep work.. mods will be arriving very soon, just trying to do this, and keep saving for a house not easy...
But afer a massive hang over the saxo was the easiest way to get over it...

Couldn't agree more - when you start modifying a saxo you start to not have passengers anymore as they'd rather make their own way to places

Got to agree 100% with this. I began falling into this trap when i owned a saxo, and incidently stopped modding it.
Moxy, you have a stripped out car with a healthy engine, decent suspension and brakes, and a single bucket with harness. Perfect spec to get out and gain some experience in your car? (Stu [sexy_Gt] is a perfect example of just getting out on track, his driving skills reward the 'lack' of power)
Too many people build 'epic' ASW builds, but are shit drivers on track because they only know how to brag on a forum and have never even driven their car to it's potential on track.
mark1311
18th August 2011, 12:28
totali agree with above tbh, i fell into the must be bang on befor use it on track etc. whent to cadwell on monday in the new vtr. 1st proper track session, standad vtr with my brakes and susspention was plenty quick enough to learn it. better/easyer to beable to learn/drive a slower car then a faster one. i would get your cage in then do 4/5 track sessions whilst collecting parts etc. then over upgrade the engine mate. am quite happy with the vtr engine for now till i learn the car and track then will add more power and sticky tryes.
spend your money on track time. yes 200 bhp maybe alot more fun then 120bhp, but imo i rather do a track day every month for a year learning car, learning to drive well on track. then save all money for epic engine, then you go out with loads of power and not much experiance at track driving and then bin it on 1st few laps.
AndySAXO
18th August 2011, 12:32
Yer I am not trying to be harsh in anyway.
We all full in to the trap, I did, but I am now getting out there.
And now getting the best out of the car.
Strip maybe a cage, good suspension, brakes, some good tryes.
Get out there, have fun and learn the car, what can be better, improved and do it like that.
AndySAXO
18th August 2011, 12:33
Also don't have to buy all the best stuff, you may want it to handle ect in different ways.
Just learn the car and improve it.

Youre right IMO. doing a few track days in a lesser powered car is more fun than doing no track days but telling people you have a high powered car.
Take AlexB for example, biggest ASW on the forum, and constantly tells people how high spec is car is. but by his own admission, he can't drive it quick.
No disrespect here moxy, or to anyone for that matter. But the way i see it is, you have a tidy car to be able to get out there and enjoy it. dont fanny around with all the fancy engine parts that only people on the internet will care about. people on the track care about how well you drive, not how much you spent on a build.
Jay_

Drive it! :y:
mark1311
18th August 2011, 16:41
another thing aswell... you make your "spec list" then build the car..? imo thats 1st mistake.
how do you no you need to change all the brake setup? i.e braided lines, 4 pots, etc. whe you havet drove it standard? i think best thing to do is do cpouple track days learn it then think right i dont like this and dont like that be better if was bit stiffer etc.
i have done my track day and now started my list, i no i defo wont a diff and shorter box, but if i had gone out in it with a diffed s1 box to start with. how owuld i realise how much better it is with that money spend? i no fact when i have the new box on i will be abe to tell its money well spent alot more then if just whent out with it to start with.

You've never claimed it to be for track though james, (the saxo i mean) so a different scenario imo.
I think youre crazy for spending that much on a saxo, but hey, it's your money and youre 100% in a much better financial position than me, so i guess my opinion is completely invalid in that respect.
As you say, you have a car which will undoubtedly be more capable on track if you desired the need for it.

Actually couldnt agree more, well said!

well said, ive got a mate with a caged corsa sport, it looks like a banger racing car, its a right mess, he loves it, drives the wheels off it, thats waht track days are for :y:
end of the day, the more money you sink into it, the more your worried about ruining it, mines not far from being able to actually get some track time, but im worried now lol, its not gonna stop me though!

Im going for an epic engine spec and never plan to drive the car hard......what does that make me??
regardless of what money you have, it makes you stupid, why would you spend money on the engine and then never drive it to its potential?!
its just pointless and by sounds of it, just for forum asw, interested to know why you intend on spending money on it?
a light saxo with bodies/turbo/sc is going to be great fun on tracks and in the twisties

No point spending loads and loads if you dont plan on driving it hard, may as well make it a show car!

Its done 65 miles in the last 2-3 years.....when its finished i intend on it being a show car. A show car however needs to have all areas covered imo....bodywork, engine etc etc

I think people should be allowed to do what they want with cars.
I love big progress threads and enjoy what people do with their cars.
I got sucked into building a car to spec - would I do it again?! Yes, why?! Because I enjoyed it and learnt a lot.
The only thing I'd do differently, having spent £xxxx on a Saxo and sold it all off, is I'd start with a quicker car like a Renaultsport megane

-maybe fit 4 pots...
im going to trax but not in the saxo, meanwhile i spray the boot and it come out awesome, however, once the cage is welded in, i will take it to a bodyshop so it looks bang tidy!!!

nice plans mate, IMO if you can find a set, get some hispec's or similar, about the same price by the times you get discs and pads, but they dont squeel
dont get me wrong, i love my brembos, and the stopping power is unreal, but if i had the choice now id go hispecs as 1 they dont squeel and 2 you can still run 14" rims on them, so it makes track tyres ALOT cheaper
something worth thinking about
moxy89
12th September 2011, 21:01
good shout. i think i will still be running 15inch track wheels mate, i might get rid of the pro race and get c5 steelies. i dont want the car to look anything special, need to get the alloys done for the winter though and get it tucked away in the garage and put more towards a house deposit!! fail
blackie_2k5

just a heads up mate, decent rubber is significantly cheaper in 14" thats why most stick to 14s for track wheels :y:

For someone that bangs on about track cars being about performance and not looks you don't half contradict yourself...
I'm sure nobody's that fussed that you want your "track slag" to look nice at local meets etc - you just seem to want to be in with the ASW track look crew and be in with the cool crowd who actually go on track, taking it in turns to slate the other group so you don't lose face with either - which inevitably just makes it look like you try to hard to fit in.
moxy89
20th September 2011, 14:17
why... i dont want it looking like a heap of shit... the alloys were fucked... therefore im gettting them resprayed!!! simple really, and as for a track car, not many track people buy a full SG cage!!! they buy cheap shit.. i can assure you that the car will be used and driven hard both on road and track...

20th September 2011, 14:53
The thing loads of people bang on about hitting your head on acage in proper seat and harness setup means either
Your harness isnt set up properly and youve come out of it
Your neck has allready snapped
Your seats rediculously high in the car
Or the cage has deformed in which case hitging your head on it isnt the worst case senario
Yes it can happen but sit in a car in a harness done tight and look at where the cage is
Even a seat bending with a few lateral g of 13 stone id be suprised to see enough of an impact to cause severed damage
Yes helmets help but how many race drivers have ruined helmets after crashes??
its not a very high number tbh
Look at foggy the other year rolled his 1400 rally sax
Bent both a pillars on the cage
Not a mark on the helmet of him or his co driver

Alex is totally right her, i was talking about this to a mate of mine a few years back before i got a full cage whos got a caged turbo delsol and he said if the cage is right for the car, etc your head should be nowhere near it.

I don't think the exhaust is that heavy to say it would make the car slower its not made of cast iron.
Same sort of weight as a magnex system with a midi box I'd say.
BTB exhaust systems sound awesome!
Barry123
26th September 2011, 15:21
It's heavier than the magnex but not by that much - put it like this, the difference can be made up by changing your diet if someone is that concerned about it.
All this pipe diameter chit-chat not necessary really. It's the manifold where the diameter is most in important as that's where the influence on scavenging is most pronounced. The exhaust system, particularly down stream of the first silencer is much less of a worry. The original BTB's that had the dummy cat pretty much negated the worry about the over sized pipe diameter since the reflections spent very little time at the over sized diameter before pinging back to the engine. As most of them now don't have the dummy cat then it'll be similar to the regular decatted systems that everyone has. But let's face it, does anyone actually know how to calculate all this information and spec an exhaust accordingly? Naa of course not, it's just saxo owners going on a hunch and pulling bits of information off from dubious websites. If anyone starts debating it someone will keyboard-shit themselves and tell them is a bad thing, press them further on the matter and they can't really say how bad it is because they don't have a firm enough grasp of the physics and mechanics behind it. Unless you idiot is spec'ing a 4" pipe diameter then it's not going to affect performance enough to worry anyone realistically.
Added to that the standard saxo exhaust diameter is way over spec'd for even a moderately tuned engine - bet you didn't know that people??? A BTB isn't going to turn a moderately tuned VTS into a 1.1.
So choose a system you like to listen to (unless it's a supersprint and similar as they sound shit.) and don't fart around worrying about the performance difference.

Aha my car!
I took the btb off and fitted a saxsport to see if there was any noticable difference in power, there wasnt. I soon went back to the btb as the saxsport made the car sound like a lawnmower. All this "rasp" people go on about is bollocks really.
Also it was my understanding the "dummy cat" was a expansion chamber, i red up about it on the gmc website. Mine still has one in and its not fooling anyone if its meant to be a dummy cat lol

Barry i didnt say the sizes would effect performance too much i was saying the weight difference wuld i know it wont make a world of difference but why swap an exaust that works for one that looks the same sounds the same makes similar power but weighs a few kg more in essence allthough even small youve lost performance
it may id centre of gravity ect but mainly i was taking the piss
And how many cars running decent power have a 2.25" system or bigger i think ryans one of the only guys with something that size that actually might be benefitting from it i dont know enough about exhausts to be able to definitavely say oh a 2.5" is too big but just looking at most well specced cars a 2" is ample

You said you thought the BTB was pretty quiet, what manifold are you using? Still the raceland one? Just that a full BTB system is anything but quiet... I got mine measured at work before going to the ring, averaged about 93 decibels at 5.5k revs.

Looking good, how long did it take to fit the aerocatches?
moxy89
5th October 2011, 20:19
Ross done them, took a fair wack of time, broke the dremel lol, However well worth it, was around 2-3 hours fitting them

Spent a bit of time making sure they were symmetrical and a good fit to the bonnet.
Where they are is right above the bracing on the bonnet so takes a bit of cutting

oh i will mate, learnt alot... but it was not worth spending the money... it would have sat on my drive all year and not been used... the seat ripped out the floor, something not right there... had to go... got a works van and a daily so going to save like fuck and see what comes around so i dont have to use my house deposit

14th October 2011, 16:39
Fair play mate. I think it`s best, you were ooooing and arrrrring for a long time with the car! People don`t want to pay good money for decent motors nowadays...so breaking it is the best option. :)

You sure about that or do you want to make a thread about it, then gauge interest on it then sell it then gauge interest again then keep it then think about it again?
moxy89
14th October 2011, 16:52
would have still been faster than yours FACT... I loved the car, but when you see it sat on the drive for so long not moving it makes you all out of love with it... it had to go... it would not have been worth the cash spending all the cash on it just to get it to a usable condition...
MiniGibbo
14th October 2011, 16:53
You sure or do you want to put a thread up in general chat and ask if it would of been faster?

So the supposed mint shell was full of rust? You were asking a fair bit for the car before deciding to keep it and track it... Lovely late example etc etc.
No need for all the threads when basically nothing much happened, just a load of talk!
Good luck with whatever u get next - no need for more threads on it though ;)

I don't get it?
You underseal, fit a bigger arb, strip it put a bucket seat in, i dont know whether it had a raylle box or not, fit a predator then looks like a standard ecu, try selling it then say your going to boost it, buy a btb and rate it so much compared to everything else.
I know gibbo talks shit but im a little with him on this one..
You gave it a 19hour detailing session the other day, what for?
It never saw track although suppose to be a 'track car'.
My 1.4 furio saw track, it has a full interior along with 128000 miles, its a daily, and i loved the track session even if its slower than everything!
Srs some people have so much time on there hands..

I used to be like this all the time with the sax tho. When i drove it on track and stuff i never wanted to sell it. When i wasnt driving it, i had no moitvation with it and kep thinking why am i spending shit loads on a saxo :/ After owning 4 saxos i finally went jap lol!

When a car is sat there for a year without moving you fall out of love with it, it had a rallye box and the casing cracked!!! The car was mint, however it was never going to be upto my standards without thousands spent on it... and at the end of the day it a saxo thats worth fuck all!!!!

Not being nasty or anything but I was in the exact same scenario 10 months ago.
I took Saxo off the road, was in process of building it up. Realised my plans and money were not worth it.
Bought a Clio 172 for less 1/4 of the price of how much it was going to cost to build up my Saxo and it was a lot nicer to driver and a lot quicker.
Good luck anyway. Was a nice car.

yeah, like tufty said i was ummm and arring with this car for ages, i never fell in love with it... i was stupid for buying a VTS in the first place was a impulse buy wanted a starlet after my 1.1.. It time to grow up, get a nice fast daily and move out and enjoy...

Those who r going to turbo their cars just get on and do it - not create x number of threads stating their plans which never happen.
There's a lesson in there somewhere.
moxy89
15th October 2011, 15:51
i was well up for doing it, i loved the way the saxo drove, however when you price everything up and then think to yourself it a saxo, then when i though i can get a decent car and be comfortable..
