Anyone train and not use any supplements such as protein shakes? I stopped training for a month cos the shakes were ruining my stomach and im wondering if anyone trains without supplements, just eating well? If so what difference have you noticed with or without??

I do at the moment, only eating 4 meals a day, not necessarily huge either... well, breakfast and before bed isn't. I'm still gaining weight somehow, and still getting slightly bigger.

Supplements, as the name would imply, SUPPLEMENT a solid training routine and diet.. You can theoretically get just the same results pretty much without them - they make the slightest difference. Protein powders are particuarly useful because hitting your protein requirements through food alone can be very expensive, but if cost wasn't an issue you'd be better off getting it all from food anyway. Supplements don't make you "un-natural' either.. that's gear..

IMO supplements for the most part are more of a mental stimulus more than anything.. They make you feel more 'into' the whole bodybuilding thing and are sort of a constant reminder of why you're doing what you're doing etc etc. People get too hooked up on them though, hard work + solid diet are FAR more important than any stupid supplements.

im with you on that robin, i was taking 4 shakes per day and was blasting through it, im thinking that by tearing muslces were half way there by weight training, added with a diet of healthy foods and proteins we cant go wrong. The old skool guys managed years ago so why cant we without using every supplement available??! Im not saying supplements dont work, they do, but for me as an individual, especially shakes just dont agree with me, the only thing ill be using will be a recovery supplement i think
