Power Wise? Its very hard to say cause a spec like this hasnt been done before so really got to wait and see and then go from there tbh,
The bodyshop should manage it within the time scale cause there is no repair work or removal of rust etc cause its a brand new shell and no stripping down and fitting parts.

Great progress mate :y:
Question: Why have you stayed with the 1.4 8v engine? Any particular reason?
Surely you would gain so much more from a 1.6 8v or even a 16v?
Just curious that's all :A:

Wanted to be different. This build isnt about the power, Its about being different. You see lots of 16v boost builds and a few 1.6 8v builds but nothing like this as far as am aware to this spec from a 1.4 8v engine.

You boosting on standard or forged pistons ? will make bloody good power most of the kit is the dp one. You got the dp manifold? Also I'm not sure but the Saxos run the s1 inlet with the icv in the side. I would recommend getting it alloy welded or alloy threaded so it's really nice and tight. As mines been siliconed in with two self tappers and 8psi is working it lose.
Will keep an eye on this.

Not needed for the ICV to be fitted into the Inlet. Forgot to mention i am running a 1.4 Quiksilver loom and it wont be required to modify like you do on the VTR engine's etc when fitting this inlet

skimmed this on moaners afew times, looking good, one question which i was going to ask on oc but forgot
your pistons...are they high comps? and is this why your running a decomp plate? or or they not low enough for the compression you want to run?
Sophia_Bush

I think he's using those pistons as there aren't any off the shelf low comp 75mm bore 1.4 pistons out there pretty sure it is all custom

Yes am running high comp pistons, Gav is correct they dont make 1.4 pistons low comp off the shelf. Also with the mix and match head and block i didnt want to run the risk running compression too high.
If i decide the compression is too low i will remove and just run high comp pistons.

thought so, just looking at the pics :D
i wouldnt worry about the compression being too low mate, my vtr is running really low on stock rods and pistons
we guesstimated mid-low 8's(couldnt get a good idea due to the head being skimmed a fair bit) and on a pretty tame ignition map mine made 218bhp on 15psi recentley :y:
should get some good power out of this on decent boost :D

Just with skimming the head and block and running high comp pistons i thought a wee bit safer to bring it back down to about normal compression.

not with that turbo blakie
trouble is with all those greek lads is they only drag race, so hp figure is everything. they are big into drag/road racing. smaller turbo setup's like this will be appropriate for what it will be used for.

problem after problem with this engine of mine.
Had a major set back today with it and will need to put engine on hold for around 12 weeks now awaiting on new parts.
On the bright side it wont stop me from enjoying some boost as going to fit a standard 1.4 engine with decomp plate for the time being until the proper engine is 100% complete and ready to fit.
blackie_2k5
7th October 2011, 18:13
whats the prob mate?
still have on decomp though :D be a nice stepping stone actaully :y:
yeah danny i know hes not gonna get those figures from that turbo, but i say he'll EASILY get over 200bhp without pushing it too much
thats alot for any car never mind a 1.4 lump though, with that sort of power and how light this car is going to be, its going to be seriously quick car
edit- ..... actually what turbo is that? i thought you had a gt2860.. but that doesnt look like one?

GT25 am using mate.
Problem with the engine is that am using hi comp pistons and its causing to much problems so has the conrods. going to just get a complete new set and start over.
Power wise. Anything over 200bhp i will be happy with.
blackie_2k5
7th October 2011, 19:10
yeah, i thought you may have issues with them tbh
never mind, least if you get some proper low comps in you wont have worries of blowin the h/g or decomp on higher boost :)
less chance of future probs, i see you having no probs getting 200bhp either tbh

I haven't had any luck with the pistons and rods so decided going to ditch them and get a set made.
Running a standard engine is a good example to what power i will get before putting proper engine in.

Modified 16v rods. Doubt they would mate as i had to modify them even more.
blackie_2k5
7th October 2011, 19:40
ahhh i see, 16v rods would fit mine, but not if youve brutalised them :p
what exactly did you do? i was under then impression the 1400 had a shorter stroke aswell?

ahhh i see, 16v rods would fit mine, but not if youve brutalised them :p
what exactly did you do? i was under then impression the 1400 had a shorter stroke aswell?
I bought them and pistons from a COMPANY and the part of the rod that bolts to the crank was wider than the bore. Had to modify them so there slightly smaller than the bore so they can be fitted.
Went to time up the engine and crank kept locking. Tried a few things and ended up lifting the head to find out the pistons at its highest point is hitting the head and that's with a decomp fitted also.
blackie_2k5
7th October 2011, 20:09
so hes made them "slimmer" at the base? or has fitted chunkier shells? not quite sure what you mean by them being smaller lol
thats a bit shit tbh, you spoke to them? would have thought he'd know they were diff.. i hope you get a refund or something mate :y:
EDIT- or is the base of the rod arm actually hitting the bse of the bore because of the size of it? so hes machined a bit out to clear it?
fairmorn308
7th October 2011, 20:15
The bores are for example 80mm the widest point on the conrod was 81mm. Means piston wont fit thru the bore.

if you havent already, ask him about the electronic boost control, he briefly went into it with me, something for me to look into for the future, would be really handy on your build :y: and help get the best out of your set up

nope mate, runs superb. thats how it told me to fit it with the instructions with my decomp plate. but mine isnt a DP item.
im not sure if it would be an issue for you, thats probably how dp do it??
but make sure you have worked your compression ratio out properly.

14th October 2011, 19:12
what size decomp and head gaskets, the decomps are normally bonded to the head, as danny said did dp tell you to do it that way? i cant see it being an issue really, but id imagine your compression ratio will be seriousley low with 2 gaskets unless theyre pretty slim?

Yes the full kit was supplied with 2 thin head gaskets, Also confirmed if that was correct with ATSpeed regarding fitting two head gaskets

rich, dont take this the worng way but i dont believe this is the best way of doing things for you.
i have built dozens of cars fron scratch and this is a tight deadline. it can be done easily, but will the quality be there?? im not so sure. it would be ashame to see such potential in the car then throw it together.
a deadline can be a good idea as it keeps you doing things, but too tight a deadline and mistakes can be made
good luck anyhow :)

Hi mate, just about your custom turbo cooling set up. I assume you are entering and exiting from the same coolant line? i always thought its best to come from one and go to the other? You have two take offs one in through turbo and back out to where it come from? Im just not to sure wether this would be efficient enough? that said the water should not get warmer than 89c with a standard thermostat?
The reason i bring it up, is it just seems to easy to be correct lol?

Quality? All brake and fuel lines were all made prior to car put to bodyshop. All brackets and holes drilled for rivet nuts all installed aswell. All suspension and engine is complete and ready for fitting.
I dont see a issue with quality as am sure you will agree once you see it all complete.

Last night i made a start on all the wiring looms.
I have now made a custom mini loom for between the alternator and Starter motor, I have extended the plugs engine loom so ecu + multi plug sits under glove box. Also extended the multi plug for the headlight loom to sit under glove box also.

Its a normal radiator top hose just had the water oil cooler take offs cut down. No restrictor just the hose reducers.

I see what you mean, if the two pipes were a bit further away it might work better... but tbh, i think it will hold out fine with the thermostat opening and closing...i guess it is a trial and error thing... temp sensor is not far away so if the water temp gets too hot from the turbo then you will know i guess.

you can run the turbo without water cooling with no real side effects so I wouldn't worry too much, the oil does most of the cooling. The water was there on the 200sx mostly to continue cooling the turbo once the engine had been turned off

i dont agree with that mate,i know a lad who fried a gt28rs in 900 miles because the turbo was not getting enough cooling.if you dont have a set of decent guages you will never know if that turbo is overheating.

im really confused about this build!
i understand the usual everyone wank over someone who can afford to buy all the shiny off the shelf bits most who own 106/ saxos cant afford......appreciate the time scale you are building the car in..... but there are so many questions i have....
building a 1.4 turbo is slightly innovative nothing amazing! as people have already stated there are several abroad and am pretty sure its been done here (even if not to this spec)
why didnt you do what the hill climb boys do and use the crank and pistons and reduce the 1.6 16v engine to a 1.4?! so you would be running a 1.4 16v turbo....
also the manifold would still fit if later on you decide the 1.4 isnt enough displacement and you wanted to swap back to the 1.6 or even the 1.8 stroker kit....
also why are you using the 1.3 rallye head instead of the 1.4 xsi head? as far as im aware the inlet still fits the xsi head?!
if you have alot of money to play with (which it seems you do with your range rover sport etc etc....) why not have dp make you something alot more interesting such as the twin supercharged 1.4 206 they built or something along those lines something truly one off.....

1st off the engine that is fitted isnt the proper engine for various reasons.
Reason fitting the 1.3 head instead of the xsi is due to the porting matching the 1.3 inlet manifold.

fair enough on the 1.3 head matching the inlet but are you not going to get further work done on it?! on the exhaust ports etc etc....
what do you mean that the engine isnt the proper one im going off the spec you have listed the 1.4 xsi block with the 1.3 head or has the plan changed?!
i read you are using a temporary engine while "a problem" is being fixed on the proper engine i assumed the proper engine is the 8v 1.4 100bhp one?!
what im saying is why are you running a 1.4 8v?!
if you want to keep it 1.4 for a specific reasons i dont see why? or have missed the part why you said......
surely using a 16v engine reduced to a 1.4 using the crank and rods means you can still use forged 1.6 pistons as the crank and rods will change the stroke keeping it the 1.4 as you said, and also saves the hastle of having custom pistons made?!
im not trying to drag your thread down, i find it interesting as im currently studying motorsport engineering and think the money you are clearly spending you could get better results....
crisppug
27th October 2011, 18:59
interesting...................i do like these discussions.my oppinion is "after having/owning" a 106 turbo is you always want more lol.only problem imo is using the 1.4 you have a much lower power capacity.yes power is not everything i know but why not use a 1.6 16v but run "low boost" and have it reliable as such.and leave scope for further modifications.
but i also appreciate this as it is a 1400 and it is different :) i chose to go the way i have because its been done a few times before,so knew information and advice is easier found.

the whole reason for this build is to be different in this country. Might not be different in other countries but they 9/10 use theres for drag and not the track.
Also money spent is no object cause its not about having huge BHP 300 + i dont see the point as where i live in scotland i wouldnt beable to use that sort of power on the road at all.
Am using 1.4 alloy bottom end for now.
blackie_2k5
27th October 2011, 19:33
i wouldnt worry about power, the greek lads are running 1.4's on standard pistons and rods to 350bhp+
if you wanted more power, then you can just get a bigger turbo, i like that its a 1.4, for the smae reason i like mine being a vtr...its alot more satisfying telling ppl in expensive cars they just got anal punishment off a 1.6 8v....you still get a bit from the 16v...but no where nears as much :D

I think there is an enormous amount of pleasure having a tiny engine that goes like stink... even Gav's little 1.4 turbo with it's awfully restrictive exhaust flange made 148lbsft of torque at 4500 rpm!! That's ridiculous! It was great fun to grunt about in
