As I no longer have a car I have suspended my policy. However decided not to get another car til after Christmas.

I have only just started the policy.

As I pay montly I will need to keep paying each month, no choice. I assume as I will be going with no car for some time, I will need to cancel?

£150 a month for nothing is a hard one to take, so getting tempted no to pay at all to be honest!

If I was to do this, will getting insurance on a monthly basis be harder? Things are already hard enough as 95% + of companies don't quote to folk like me with unspent convictions (non-motoring)

Just ring up and cancel

They will obviously charge you for the amount of days you have been covered and refund the rest

Failing that just cancel the direct debit

If you cancel your monthly direct debit at the bank without telling them & they fail to take your monthly insurance they will default/charge you interest for a failed payment,

best thing to do is ring them say you don't own the car no more & you want to cancel your insurance and they will work out your cancellation fee,

some company's have a fixed cancellation fee (Around £60) but some other company's do it differently,
like the last company i was with they worked out what i had remaining to pay off on the full insurance then i pay off like 10% off the full price... so say you have £1200 left to pay on the insurance you would pay 10% off that so be like £120 :y:

I have cancelled two direct debits with car insurance companies and was not charged.

They just send you a letter saying 'Your DD has been cancelled, please call us within the next 7 days or your insurance will be cancelled'

I refused to pay the cancellation fee and simply cancelled the DD, ignored the initial letter and I got a second letter to say my insurance had been cancelled.

No cancellation fee
No extra payments (I had obviously paid for the amount of days I was insured for)
No 'charges'

Ring them up first and see what they say, you may not have to pay a cancellation fee

There not gonna take you to court over a £60 cancellation fee, it would cost them more to persue it.

It's an empty threat, they push to see what they can get away with

i am with admiral and took myself off a multicar policy for a month whilst i was without a car.
the bird on the phone said as long as i put myself and a new car on the policy within 6 months i would still receive my no claims!!

was tempted to be without one for 6 months to save some money and still get my 1st years no claims but decided after only a month not having a car wasnt an option haha.
