Do you have to tell your insurance company when you get the points or when you renew?
As on several forums on the internet i've heard different views
Let me know asap
Cheers

when you renew
maddison_vts
18th August 2011, 16:18
in a word yes. but as orangepeel said don't bother telling them until you either renew or change the car on the policy.
If you don't tell them there is all the crap of void insurance etc.

Depends on the insurers, lots say just tell them when you renew (like i did)

when you renew, well thats what i would do
NickJ
18th August 2011, 17:23
Would phone insurance company personally and check with them
Worst case scenario, you have an accident, insurer finds out you now have points and voids your policy, the excuse 'my mates on Sax-P said I don't have to declare until renewal' won't stand very strong

when i insure motors, they must think i lie
insurer : "do you have any points"
me : "no"
they obviously think, hmm a 21 year old, with no points... somethings not right here.

ive never declared untill renewal, it normally only makes a difference if your paying monthly, i always pay outright so it doesnt really matter
but if i got anymore i wouldnt be ringing up to tell them tbh, i took out a contract with X points and still use same car etc, it should not matter.......................... only normally changes on hire purchase insurance as youve not actually settled your years cover, so for the remainder they can charge you more for that period :y:

Ahhh checked my insurance with bell and it says that it unacceptable driving conviction (MS60) wont insure me what so ever, checked compare the market and there trying to charge £4649 at the cheapest! which has went from £700 for a year with 3 years no claims to that with 4 years no claims and 3 points! rediculous!

What did you do to get an MS60?
blackie_2k5
18th August 2011, 19:51
i told you to fight it, £200 max court cost would be nothing in comparison ;)
youve got this for the next 4 years now, and trust me ive got an sp50, it only goes up every year, not down...
if you failed court youd probs have only got a bout £40 costs anyway, id try appeal it if i were you

i have an sp50 never gone up untill this year, its due off next year, unless you have mega points from my experience no one cares about 3 points any more as there are so many cameras about n so on. only reason its gone up this year is cos of the shit state the country is in, i dont know anyone whose insurance has gone up

if i fought it, got found guilty i would have got a £1000 fine and 6points + court costs, i would rather just accept the 3 points and 60quid but im confused to as why they havent given me an MS30 which would have been more in my category or maybe CD10 driving without due care and attention, sure an MS60 is just something they give to "boy racers" to put them all in the same category

only got rid of 3 for sp30 back end of last year aswell :(
....for anyone wondering im not that much of a cock....i drive for a living and am pretty unlucky tbf

Looks lke your options are:-
Pay more for insurance due to points and wait till points come off.
Stop driving and use other means!
How did you get the points???
Do you need the car for work?
Having told one company that you have the points means that it will be in the insurance system.

I had 4 or 5 years of having to declare CD10 (careless driving) which put my premiums up a lot (from £500 to around £1200). This was 15 years ago in my first or second year of driving, but it was better than being banned like they tried to do. Just keep looking and you will find someone who is willing to insure you, but the way insurance prices are these days it will really hit your pocket!!!
Probably a daft question but have you tried all the companies that don't advertise on go-compare etc, there are loads of brokers to try but it means calling them and getting quotes over the phone. I have to do this now insuring my 4x4 as it's re-registered as a campervan and the nearest qoute I got online was £3000+ after a day or two of calling different brokers I got it down to just under £600.

From what ive read MS60 is the worst code you can get. It is generic so the insurers cannot be sure exactly what you did. So they assume the worst. Gutted mate.
If i was you id seriously reconsider the bike.

Ring up your insurer and ask or look for a policy document on their website
Elephant/Admiral/Bell for example don't require you to tell them about points until you renew
Other insurers may be different, always best to check!

Nice and specific:
Code - MS60
Description - Offences not covered by other codes
Points given - As Appropriate

Nice and specific:
Doesnt this mean its the worst one possible because your actual offence isnt known. Therefore theyd assume it was very bad?
blackie_2k5
19th August 2011, 12:34
drink driving are worse, but ms60 is naughty as it can mean alot!
my pc30 can mean diff things to to diff insurers, eg one it means parked vehicle in pedestrian controlled area, another it can mean, stationery vehicle pedestrian crossing, and another it can mean vehicle in contradiction of public corossing etc etc, never seen so many diff explanations of the same code!
direct.gov lists: Contravention of pedestrian crossing regulations with stationary vehicle

pretty much, but death by dangerous driving is worse
best off getting a smaller engine car and looking for a specialist company
or again....mr justice ;)

Woooooooooooooo
been to citizens advice and the guy said theres nothing you can do, rang up the northumbria police fixed penalty unit and they said i need to write a letter to the awarding officer as the subject he put down means i get this points code, if he accepts that i need my car for work and to transport my mother around (due to disability) he may change it if he feels my conviction was too harsh
Rang up insurance thinking my policy was going to get cancelled or shoot up by £££'s but nope, £17.50 admin charge until the end of my policy but they wont renew my policy with this code on
So come February if my convition code hasnt changed im going to be going through insurance brokers as the code to them is more specific than just "MS60" no insurance, they will ask what its for

Could mean you you were shagging a horse whilst doing a headstand on a motorbike at 150mph down the M1
To be honest, most online quotes are going to whack the price up because this code could mean you had done all sorts of things.
Either ring up the companies and explain what the conviction is actually for or possibly go through an insurance broker
