not a bad car tbh the 2,2 engine is quite reliable providing the timing chain and modified oil jet have been done, there not the easiest to work on as there aint much room but other than that there a decent buy oh but dont expect it to be quicker than a vtr/s lol

i would of thought a 2.2 145bhp 16v would be faster than a 1.6 saxo vtr developing 98bhp to be honest mate, parkers say 7.9 seconds 0-60. similar to vts performance.
at the end of the day its not all about speed, i would think it would be a bit more refined than a saxo, i used to have an astra van and the ride was far superior to my vtr.

and insurance on a 2.2 sri is 1100 fully comp, 21 year old with 2 years no claims and one accident claim to the vlaue of £1000.
my saxo vtr costs 1095 to insure.

20th August 2011, 16:40
im not big into speed tbh i would have settled for a furio at the right price i just though i'd mention it if that was part of the reason you were buying 1, i dunno about parkers guide but i was a vauxhall technician for over 4 years and have driven just about every model of astra, vectra, corsa there is and having owned a 2.2 15obhp vectra sri and my mate also has the astra coupe 2.216v i'd have to say my little vtr is by far alot quicker all the to abou 100! if your after comfort and a good motorway cruiser then the 2.2 is the better option good mpg with grunt to back it up unlike the useless 1.6/1.8 lol

not only that its the area you live in mate, add an older driver helps, got my mum on mine as a named driver, as i work away quite a bit so if she needs to move it she can, and it drops most of my quotes by around 300 quid.

I'm a vauxhall fan and they ain't as fast as you'd think. Can't see one getting near a vts. Depends how you weigh it up with the cheap insurance though. Interiors are pretty poor. The higher spec one's are nearly the same as the entry level ones.

yeh thats wot i was thinking, fed up of being in a tin can saxo to be honest, it was alright when i was 18, but there not that fast, and certainly not comfortable or spacious.

Gonna let you have a little tip here, try and get an sri turbo, same car as a gsi just a different bodykit etc but due to their being less of them about they are cheap as chips to insure, im 18 with 1 years no claims and could insure one for £1800

Loved my old 2.2 16v SRi Mk4.Actually regret selling it tbh.
Good on fuel, very well built, as reliable as a swiss watch and leagues ahead of a Saxo as a good everyday car.Not fast, but quick enough and had plenty grunt to keep up with everyday traffic. They don't need revved to go anywhere either as the torque from the Z22SE comes in low down the revs.
Timing chain is an issue, but can be sorted for £100.Piss easy to change (coming from some1 who has never changed a timing belt) as there is plenty guides online. Can be done in about 3hrs.
Try and get 1 with cruise control and trip computer.Well spec'd as standard.
Handling is shocking as standard, but thats easy sorted and transforms the car no end.
Not much go wrong with them, just keep on top of servicing.
My old 1....

Nik_L

there still all shite.... unless it the GSI....

20th August 2011, 18:44
Even the Gsi's arent that good in standard form. They need cash thrown at them to make them half the car they should have been.
Thought you were getting an E46 M3 anyway??

ive had many vauxhalls and if its a ecotec/ecowreck engine it will be slow and shit you wanna get a standard 1.4 mk4 astra and stick a redtop in (c20xe/c20let)

I had a 1.4 16v Corsa B sport what was an ecotec & it was quicker than the Westcoast/Furio's ive had and would keep up with a VTR (standard like)

I would go for a 1.8 personally, the later z18xe engine though.
I had a coupe (heavier than hatch) with that engine and it was definitely faster than my previous mk2 VTR.
Handling as standard is crap but I put some cheap ebay coilovers (£130 delivered!) and that transformed the whole car.

Thats what I have in my hatch a vtr will be on my bumper till about 50mph when i change to 3rd then its see ya, very tunable engine too not unheard to for people to get them to 170bhp without turbos etc.

21st August 2011, 12:47
Every engine is tuneable, its the cost thats the main factor.
To get 170bhp out of the Z18XE without going F/I you would need ITB's.
You would need upwards of £2k to get it to 170bhp.
You do get 4 branch manifolds and other simple bolt on parts, but they aren't cheap.
They are quick engines as standard as they are mated to a close ratio gearbox. My mate has a Vectra B SRi 120 (Z18XE) and its quicker than my brothers Vectra B SRi 140 (X20XEV).And its all down to the gearbox.

No your wrong actually, easy to get to 150bhp without much money then from there to 170bhp you need to change the inlet manifold as its very restrictive standard.

Can you list the mods needed to get 150bhp, then what you would need to get 170bhp.
I havn't said its impossible, its actually pretty easy like most modern day eco friendly engines. But what i am saying is its pretty expensive and bang for buck, its not really worth it.
Almost every engine is tuneable.
Mieran
21st August 2011, 13:52
I think its waste of money buying engine mods that give little gain its hardly noticeable.
I would concentrate on handling mods, coilovers, good tyres, whiteline arb, poly bushes etc.
