Optical output ?

I just wondered what the difference in sound the optical output gives ? 5.1? or just the standard stereo output ? help ??

Optical audio is digital. As far as I know it supports stereo, 5.1 and 7.1.

Pretty sure it supports others but I'm not clued up as to what formats.
